Nursing in Texas

1. In 2005, the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce

Studies projected Texas would need 293,000 RNs

in order to meet its needs in 2020. That’s 51%

more than we have today (194k RNs).

2. Current Assumption: Texas will need this number

of RNs by 2020, if not more.

Growth of Nursing in Texas

- Achieving 80% BSN

+

by 2020

3. As of 9/2011, there were 194k RNs in Texas

• Currently 50% Diploma/ADN; 50% BSN or higher • Current production is at 60% ADN; 40% BSN

• Currently only ~16% ADN and BSN continue their education

4. Meeting the 80% goal will require 234,000 BSN+ RNs (80% of 293k)

1. Patience

2. Wisdom

SECRET: No single “right” or “best” way to get to the goal – increased production and increased educational progression. The key is flexibility – being contextually relevant.
