Introduction of NIA

As one of the world’s top-level organizations specialized in providing ICT policies and technologies, National Information Society Agency was reorganized in May 2009 upon merger between National Information Society Agency, an institution providing national ICT policies and technologies, and Korea Agency for Digital Opportunity and Promotion, an institution specialized in closing the digital divide of home and abroad. National Information Society Agency is engaged in improving the world’s top-level ICT infrastructure of Korea by building the high-speed information and communications infrastructure, supporting establishment of e-government, and promoting application of new ICT such as big data and IoT(Internet of Things). Also as the supervisory institution for national informatization, it is carrying out its responsibilities of closing the digital divide of both home and abroad and establishing a healthy information culture. With the mission of ‘achieving the creative economy and citizens’ happiness through informatization’, National Information Society Agency will continue to do its best to solve current national issues and allow the benefits of informatization to reach each and every corner of the society.

What is the Creative Economy?

An economy that considers creativity the key value of the economy and creates new added-value, jobs, and growth engines through convergence of citizens’ creativity, science technologies and information and communication technologies

III.

Message

from the President

I extend my warmest greetings as the President of National Information Society Agency.

As the institution truly specialized in ICT, we at NIA have played the leading roles in challenging and pioneering new areas and finally helped Korea become one of the IT powerhouses around the globe. We still continue to create new values as the leading institution for solving national and social issues with ICT. The new government of Korea considers ICT and science and technology as the key values for realizing the creative economy. The rapid development of smart technologies and the environmental changes such as the new government’s creative economy and Government 3.0 center around the massive wave of ‘rapid transformation into the hyper-connected society’. Using the tool of creativity, I will put my utmost effort on finding solutions to the current national issues – economic facilitation, social integration, and job creation in order to meet the needs of the times and further complete establishing the virtuous cycle between citizens’ happiness and national development.

Based on the experiences so far, we will continue to spare no effort and do our best to stay as the most trusted institution by the citizens, businesses, and the government in terms of ICT policy development and technical assistance. I kindly ask for your constant support and interest. Thank you. President of National

Information Society Agency Chang Kwang-Soo

What is Government 3.0?

A new paradigm for government operation that provides customized services to citizens while at the same time supports job creation and the creative economy by actively disclosing and sharing public information as well as communicating and collaborating after breaking down walls between government departments
