The intimation of choosing me by the Geological Society of India for the Bellur Rama Rao Birth Centenary Award - 2003 came as a pleasant surprise. Surprise because I always thought that I do not possess the pre-requisites for any such awards, and pleasant because it is always a matter of satisfaction to get recognized for one's work. Indeed, I am immensely honoured to have been chosen for this award, and I humbly and thankfully accept it.
Awards and recognitions are landmarks in one's professional career. These landmarks are indeed culminations of the long journeys one takes on career path that fosters a feeling that the hard work over the years has not gone unnoticed ultimately. More than anything else, it is also gratifying to realize that the recognition of the work is not as much of the contribution one has made in the chosen field as of the passion behind the work that has been the motivator for whatever one achieves. This realization at this juncture has made me retrospect.
After nearly four decades of my career as a geologist when I ask myself as to what has been the drive that kept me going all these years with my professional work, the answer is not straightforward. I think i t was to a great measure the passion, the love of the subject and the large and fascinating canvas geology deals with that motivated me the most. Otherwise, I do not see any reason why as a student I should leave an engineering degree course in a prestigious institute and join honours graduate and post-graduate courses in geology. I feel happy that this pr~ssion has not yet deserted me. The award has in a way vindicated my belief that pursuit of a passion and drawing pleasure from working in fields of one's interest are essential for a fulfilling and satisfying career.
My profession and interest have taken me to various parts of the country and abroad. I have tried to understand
the intricacies of the Himalayan geology, Precambrian geology, tecotnics and metallogeny of Kerrtla and Rajasthan. and the Norwegian CaIedonldes. These exposures have broadened my geological vluon, sparked my ~magination and ingrained in me a sense of enqutry, all of whtch I treasure very much. In this pursuit, I have been guided and helped by many people. I have been benefited over the years from interactions with many others. The Iist is too long, and I d o not venture to record the namex selectively. To all of them
I am deeply grateful. Lastly. I must say that whatever I have been able to do or pursue in my professional career would
not have been possible without the relentless support of my wife, Gayatrl.

First of all I thank the Geological Society of India for this honour. It is a special honour to receive an award named after Prof. K. Naha because I had the privilege of listening to many of his lectures during my student days. I especially thank my teachers Prof. Abdul Matin and Prof. Dhrwba Mukhopadhyay for all their guidance and teaching me the basics of structural geology. I thank Prof. Gautam Mitra, my Ph.D. advisor, for teaching me that working out the

ieometry of structures in the field is only the beginning; the real challenge lies in figuring out the kinematics of development af these geometries and reaching out to other disciplines in the process. He taught me that modern structural geology goes way beyond figuring out, often meaningless, simply working out phases of deformation and involves the integration of field data, quantitative data analysis, laboratory work and numerical modelling to address very focused problems. Srinivasa Rao AwardWhile presenting this award to Dr. C. Sri kantappa, the Vice-President said:
Dr. Srikantappa was born in 1950 and had his early education in Mysore. He is a M.Sc. and Ph.D, from University of Mysore. Presently he is a Professor i n the same University. Dr. Sri kantappa has carried out extensive petrographic work in the granulite facies sock of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. He for the first time reported incipient charnockite formation of Pan-African age (around
555 m.y.) in the KeraEa Khondalite Belt. He had suggested a new hypothesis of internal generation of (2%-rich fluids in the lower crust which is being currently used as one of
the models in understanding the origin of granulites. He has also reported syn-metamorphic origin of C02-rich fluids in granulites from the Dharwar craton and from the various granulite blocks in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. He has also reported the presence of different types of fluids like CO,, C02-H,O. H,O-NaCI, C02-H,O, CO,-CH,-N and hlgh saline (30 to 40 wt.% NaCI) fluids in many Deep crustal rocks from southern Ind~a.
The modern Petrograph~c investigation and stable isotopic data gathered by Dr. Srikantappa has lead to the new concept and identification of the Nilgiri granulites in southern India representing an Allocthonoi~s-meta sedimentary unit which has been thrusted onto the Dhnrwar
craton during Paleoproterozoic co1lision;ll tectonic regime. He has proposed that the Nilgiri granulites represent the deepest levels of exposure (9- 10 kbar, c.35 km paleo-depth)
of granuiite grade lower crust in southern Peninsular Indla. Based on the combined U-Pb, Sm-Nd and Rh-Sr isotopic data he has suggested an early Proterozoic age for the Nilgiri granulites. Another significant contribution worth mentioning is the extensive Petrographic work on the Archnean Sargur Group of rocks in the Dharwar craton. Dr. Srikantappa was the first to establish a full tledged fluid inclusion study laboratory in India.

I was the first student of Prof A.S.Janar-dhan, a well known petrcllogist in the country, who guided me tu work on the petrology and geochemistry of chromite bearing ultramafic and mafic rocks from the Archaean Sargur Group of rocks from the Dhnrwnr craton. My sincere thanks to both of them.I had the ambition in my I ~ f e to carry out research work on tluld ~ n c l u s ~ o n s in rocks. I was very fortunate 10 get the D A A D and Alexander vom Humboldt Post-doctoral rese~lrch fellowship to visit University of Kiel and Bonn, Germany, where I could work with Prof. Michael lir~ith, a well known mineralogist and petrologist in Gel-many. Radhakrishna PrizeThis award is to be given to the best paper published in the Journal of the Geological Society of India in a calendar year. The Council adjudged the paper "From the Roots to the Roof of a Granite: the Closepet Granite of South India7'ppubEished in the JCSI, v.62, pp.753-768, December 2003 by Jean Francois Moyen. Mudlappa Jayananda, Anne Nedelec, Herve Martin, B.Mahabaleswar and Bernard Auvray (since deceased), as the best paper.
In the absence of any authors of the paper to receive the award, the Vice President referred to a gist of the paper:
The Closepet Granite, which intrudes a cross-section of continental crust of the Dharwar Craton, outcrops at different structural levels from deep (7-8 kbr) to shallow (2-3 Kbr) crust. This allows the study of all components of this granite, the root zone, displaying strong crust-mantle interaction, resulting in highly heterogeneous, enclave-rich monzonitic to granitic magma, the transfer zone, with inferred upward
movement of these magmas and a rheological interface in the shallow crust at which the ascent of magmas was arrested. At this level only the less viscous (differentiated and enclave- free) magmas were able ro rise through a network of dykes and fill small pockets, forming typical, elliptic granitic intrusions (the "intrusion zone").
