The History of the Halloween Costume
Dressing up for Halloween or All Hallows’ Eve has been
popular for centuries. The original purpose of wearing
costumes was to ward off evil spirits.
Today, it’s more about candy and fun. Let’s review the
most popular outfits through the decades.
1920s: Clowns The Pierrot clown was all the rage in the
20s. Simple witch, farmer, and gypsy costumes were
also popular.
1930s: Disney Mass-produced costumes and rubber
masks hit the market with Mickey and Minnie Mouse
ruling Halloween in the 1930s.
1940s: Brooms & Black Hats Witches, spooky ghosts,
and black cats bewitched trick-or-treaters in the 1940s.
1950s: Aloha Buckaroo Hawaiian apparel (grass skirts,
leis, and floral shirts) and dressing up like cowboys were
popular in the 1950s. Davy Crockett and Tarzan were
also common.
1960s: Superheroes Kids and adults channeled their
favorite superheroes, such as Superman, Batman, Cat
woman, Spiderman, and Batgirl. Dennis the Menace was

Forget the candy and costumes
on Halloween— October
should be known as the month
for foodies. Not only is it the
time of brats and sauerkraut
galore, but October is also the
official month of pork, pizza,
sausage, and popcorn.
Assisted Living Week
September 13
th-19
THwas National Assisted
Living Week. We celebrated a little differently
this year. We had beanbag baseball with the
residents beating the staff. Tuesday, was
packed full of activities, it started off with a fall
photo shoot sponsored by Circle of Life. That
afternoon, we had an ice cream social where
everyone made their very own batch of
homemade ice cream and enjoyed outdoor
games. The weather was perfect!!!
The activities continued with Bingo that had
upgraded prizes & the new Bingo Board. We
had a Bentonville West student, Ava, come &
make a donation of ear buds & share her story
about music therapy & how it’s touched her
family. We had a Meadows Money Auction on
Thursday & then on Friday, we slowed things
down with a movie, popcorn & drinks. Thanks
for all who helped celebrate the joy of living in
an assisted living facility!
We had some amazing sponsors that helped
with this year…. A HUGE THANK YOU to
Circle Of Life Hospice
They did the Fall Photo shoot. The pictures are
truly amazing!
Beth with
Northwest Home Health
came thru
again; she brought the staff some amazing
cookies to help keep our energy up.
Jim & Ginny joined The Meadows Family in June 2018. Where were they before that? What were they doing? I had sooo many questions for them, we’ve talked on numerous occasions but I still knew nothing about their past. I’ve never seen one without the other unless Jim was going to get the car, so he could pick up Ginny. So I couldn’t wait to learn more about them.
Jim is from Arkansas, while Ginny is from Indiana. Jim joined the Army & was in the infantry. After the Army is where the love story starts.
Ginny worked in the office and was an Oliverette at the Oliver Corporation. Huh? What is an Oliverette? They were a square dancing group of young ladies….on tractors!! Huh??? The Oliver Corp was a farm equipment company. The selected young ladies, all wore the same cute outfit and drove the tractors to make them square dance. Sounds like fun to me!!
Jim had started working for Oliver Corp. after he was in the Army. He worked there for 40 years. He worked in sales, service, marketing…he did everything at that tractor company except be an Oliverette. That’s where Jim & Ginny met, started dating & would get married. The Oliver Corp moved Jim & Ginny to several different locations for the company.
They were married on June 14, 1959. This year they celebrated 62 years of marriage. They have 2 sons, Jim & Steve. Steve is married to Michelle and they have blessed Jim & Ginny with “grand-dogs”. Steve followed in his dad’s footsteps and joined the military.
While Steve was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas, Jim & Ginny went to visit him. After they spent time with Steve, they traveled around the area & decided to make NWA their retirement home. They loved the 4 seasons that Arkansas had.
During the retirement, Jim has volunteered at the VA in Fayetteville. He
transported other veterans to medical appointments mainly to Little Rock, but he had a trip to Detroit & a trip to Cincinnati also . Doesn’t sound like much until you see these numbers….. He did this for 11 years & during that 11 years, he worked 4,398 hours and drove 142,282 miles. Those 324 trips to Little Rock, they provided 2,638 veterans transportation to medical appointments. That deserves a GOLD star!
The most amazing advice was, “Take your wedding vows seriously & honor that commitment”. Ginny says, “He’s always treated me with respect and honor.” They are truly an amazing couple & we are so blessed to have them here.

Last year we had over 500 trick-or-treaters stop by to show off their costumes,
spread some joy, and load up on goodies. While we aren't able to continue our
annual event traditionally, we've found a safe way to bring the same joy to all.
And there will be a few 'treats, not tricks' for everyone!
'Grab & Go' Trick-or-Treating
Thursday, Oct 29, 2020
3:00-4:30pm
Kids are asked to walk through the awning to show off their costumes and wave
from a distance. Residents will watch from designated areas to see all of the
cutest, silliest & scariest costumes around. Then individually packaged bags
will be available for kids to grab at the end. We ask that
all attendees
wear face
masks and remained distanced when walking through. Staff will be present to
assist with the process.
In order to prepare enough bags, we request parents RSVP by 10/27/20 with the
number of kids planning to attend.
