Preparing for higher education has become a lot easier for Georgia residents. A new online resource, GAcollege411.org is changing the way students explore careers, prepare for the SAT and ACT, research and compare colleges in Georgia, apply for admission to college, determine the cost of going to college, and research and apply for fi nancial aid.
“I hope that every person in Georgia who is thinking about attending college will go online to GAcollege411.org today,” said Governor Sonny Perdue when the site was offi cially launched in February 2005. “This web site is the most comprehensive resource in our state to help students get ready for a brighter future, by achieving a college degree.”
What’s on GAcollege411?
Above is a picture of the GAcollege411 home page. The seven tabs across the top of the page link to the major sections of the site. But before you begin exploring the tabs, take a look at the “Create an Account” and “My 411” links near the top left of the page.
My411 — Your Own Personal Account
One of the fi rst things you should do when you visit
GAcollege411.org is open your own My411 account. It’s FREE! Your account ID and password give you access to all sections of the site and allow you to take full advantage of all the interactive tools on GAcollege411. With a My 411 account you can:
• apply online to more than 100 Georgia colleges;
• create your own profi le, which includes personal and academic information;
• record and manage your high school courses, grades, honors, and extracurricular activities;
• prepare for the SAT, ACT, ASSET, and COMPASS;
• explore hundreds of careers and use career self-assessment tools.
All you need is an active My 411 account. Click on “Create an Account” on the left side of the homepage. Then, follow the easy instructions to open your My411 account. Your account information is secure, and you control who has access to it.
Now let’s look at the tabs.
Career Info
It’s never too early to begin thinking about the kind of work you might enjoy doing once you fi nish college. After all, deciding which careers interest you will certainly impact your choice of college and course of study.
The Career Info section has tools that can help you choose a career. Once you have created your My411 account you can go to Career Info and complete various self-assessments. Career Info will then provide a list of careers that are compatible with the results of your assessments. Next, go to Career Info’s comprehensive list of hundreds of careers, and look up the ones that interest you. Each career listing includes:
• a brief job description;
• skills, education, and training required to enter the fi eld;
• average salary (national and in Georgia); and
• colleges in Georgia that offer programs relative to the career.
Student Planner
As you begin planning for college, you soon discover that staying organized and meeting deadlines are critically important. GAcollege411’s Student Planner has tools and resources that can help you stay on track throughout your high school years.
NEW! In September 2005, the High School Planner was added to the Student Planner section. High School Planner allows you to record all your high school courses, grades, honors, and extracurricular activities. Once entered into the Planner, the information will be automatically transferred into any college application you prepare online. The Planner also will track your

progress in high school coursework and compare that progress to the actual entrance requirements for every college you may be interested in attending.
Student Planner also provides these helpful tools:
• College Test Prep - GAcollege411 offers comprehensive FREE test preps, tutorials, and practice tests for the SAT, ACT, COMPASS and ASSET.
• Student Planner Timeline - The planning-for-college timeline shows the tasks you need to be completing, step-by-step, from the time you begin 9th grade until the day you are accepted to college.
• Add Your Counselor – You have the option of allowing your high school counselor to have read-only access to your My 411 information, so he or she can assist you in planning and applying for college.
GA Colleges
There are more than 100 public and private colleges and public technical colleges listed on GAcollege411.org. Something for everybody! But which one is right for you? It’s not always an easy decision, and your choice will depend on many factors.
The GA Colleges section features searching and sorting tools that make it easy to identify and compare all Georgia colleges based on criteria such as enrollment, student to faculty ratio, setting, housing, distance from your home, and costs.
Most important, GA Colleges provides a remarkably detailed profi le of each Georgia school listed. Among the information available in this section are key facts including majors and degrees offered, graduation requirements, costs, admissions requirements, application procedures and deadlines, and links to each school’s web site.
Applications and Transcripts
NEW! In Fall 2005, GAcollege411 adds an exciting new feature — the ability to apply online to all of the colleges listed in the GA Colleges section. No other single website offers you the ability to apply online to all these schools!
In addition, this section includes downloadable application forms for many scholarship, grant, and education loan programs. In some cases — including HOPE — you can even apply online. You can also complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. FAFSA is the form used to apply for all federal fi nancial aid, as well as most state and private aid.
Applying online is fast and easy, and if you have a My 411 account it gets even easier! All of the personal, academic, and extracurricular information that you have entered into your Student Planner profi le is automatically transferred to all of your online applications. No more entering the same information over and over again. It saves time and ensures accuracy and consistency.
COMING UP! In 2007, another major feature will be added to this section: the ability to transmit high school transcripts electronically.
Paying For College
Most students need help paying for college. There are many fi nancial aid resources available to you and your family, including scholarships, grants, and low-interest education loans.
The Paying for College section provides a comprehensive overview of the fi nancial aid process and specifi c information about all the fi nancial aid resources available to Georgia students. These include federal fi nancial aid programs as well as the many opportunities that the State of Georgia provides, including the HOPE Scholarship, HOPE Grant, Tuition Equalization Grant, service-cancelable loans, and more.
NOTE: Eligibility requirements for the HOPE Scholarship as per legislation enacted in 2004 will become effective for students applying for admission to college after May 1, 2007. Please see the HOPE Scholarship page on GAcollege411 for a chart that presents the current approach and the changes that will be implemented in 2007.
In addition to comprehensive program descriptions and application deadlines, this section includes fi nancial aid calculators to help students and parents with loan repayment, loan consolidation, and college savings plan calculations.
Once you’ve researched all the fi nancial aid available you can begin to apply. As mentioned before, downloadable forms and in some cases online application are available in the Applications and Transcript section of GAcollege411.
GA College Savings Plan
The State of Georgia offers a very attractive college savings plan called the Georgia Higher Education Savings Plan, administered by the Georgia Offi ce of the Treasury. This is an opportunity that all parents of young children, and even older children, should be aware of. Participants in this plan (which is a so-called 529 plan) may be eligible for a state income tax deduction of up to $2,000 per year for each benefi ciary. And unlike many other savings college savings plans, 529 plans allow your money to grow tax-free. Best of all, money used for qualifi ed higher education expenses is also free from both federal and state income taxes. Qualifi ed higher education expenses include tuition, fees, certain room and board costs, books, supplies, and equipment required for college enrollment and attendance.
As with any savings plan, the earlier you start, the higher the returns. Parents of young children, and individuals who are thinking about becoming parents someday, should defi nitely explore this opportunity.

Adult Learner
So, who’s not an adult? Actually, Adult Learner is just a term that schools use to differentiate from Traditional Learner. A traditional learner is someone who graduates from high school when they are around 18 years old, immediately goes on to college, and then completes their bachelor’s degree in 4-6 years. An Adult Learner, on the other hand, is — well, everybody else.
GAcollege411’s Adult Learner section contains special information and resources for individuals who:
• never fi nished high school and now want to take the GED test;
• started a military or civilian career right after graduating from high school and now want to begin college;
• delayed going to college in order to start a family and now want to begin college;
• want to pursue a college education online, rather than attending class on campus;
• already have an undergraduate degree but now want to get a graduate degree; or
• face a career change and require new training.
As a high school student thinking about college, you may not yet be interested in the assistance available under the Adult Learner tab right now, but don’t forget where it is. In today’s economy almost everyone will want to change careers and continue his or her education at some point in their lives.
Get the 411!
There it is — a very brief overview of GAcollege411. Really, we’ve only scratched the surface. The only way to fully appreciate the wealth of information and other resources available on the site is to actually go online and check it out. We believe that you will agree that GAcollege411 is an invaluable asset for anyone who is thinking about going to college. Ninth grade is not too early, and 12th grade is not too late. No matter where you are in high school, GAcollege411 will be a tremendous help as you plan, apply, and pay for college.
GAcollege411 is a service of the State of Georgia provided by the Georgia Student Finance Commission, the Offi ce of the Governor and many Georgia partners, including the University System of Georgia, the Foundation for Independent Colleges, the Department of Technical and Adult Education, the Department of Education, the School Counselors Association, the Offi ce of Treasury and Fiscal Services, Georgia Public Broadcasting, the Professional Standards Commission, and the Georgia Public Library Service.
