whence shall my help come? My help cometh from the LORD, who

Job Chapter I

שיאה היהו ;ומש בויא ,ץוע ץראב היה שיא ערמ רסו--םיה לא אריו רשיו םת ,אוהה.
1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was whole-hearted and upright, and one that feared God, and shunned evil.

תונב שולשו ,םינב העבש ול ודלויו . 2three daughters. And there were born unto him seven sons and

3 His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

4 And his sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and
offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said: 'It may be that my sons have sinned, and blasphemed God in their hearts.' Thus did Job continually. {P}

6 Now it fell upon a day, that the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

7 And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Whence comest thou?' Then Satan answered the LORD, and said: 'From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.'

8 And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Hast thou considered My servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a whole-hearted and an upright man, one that fearethGod, and hunneth evil?'

9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said: 'Doth Job fear God for nought?

10 Hast not Thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions are increased in the land.
אי
ךכרבי ,ךינפ לע א ל. he hath, surely he will blaspheme Thee to Thy face.'
בי
ול רש(א לכ הנה ,ןטשה לא הוהי רמא יו ,ןטשה ,אציו ;ךדי חלשת לא ,וילא קר--ךדיב הוהי ינפ ,םעמ.
12 And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand.' So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

13 And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,

14 that there came a messenger unto Job, and said: 'The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them;

יפל וכה םירענה תאו ,םחקתו אבש ל פתו ךל דיגהל ,ידבל ינ(א קר הטלמאו ;ברח.
15 and the Sabeans made a raid, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'

םיה לא שא ,רמא יו אב הזו ,רבדמ הז דוע םירענבו ןא צב רעבתו ,םימשה ןמ הלפנ ךל דיגהל ,ידבל ינ(א קר הטלמאו ;םלכא תו.
16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'A fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'

17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'The Chaldeans set themselves in three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'

18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;

עגיו ,רבדמה רבעמ האב הלודג חור הנהו ;ותומיו ,םירענה לע ל פיו ,תיבה תונפ עבראב ךל דיגהל ,ידבל ינ(א קר הטלמאו.
19 And, behold, there came a great wind from across the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'

;ושא ר תא זגיו ,ולעמ תא ערקיו בויא םקיו וחתשיו ,הצרא ל פיו.
20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshiped;

ם רעו ,ימא ןטבמ יתצי ם רע רמא יו םש יהי ;חקל הוהיו ,ןתנ הוהי--המש בושא ךר במ ,הוהי.

22 For all this Job sinned not, nor ascribed aught unseemly to God. {P}
Summary: Job Chapter I
Iyov, or Job, is described as a pious gentile who fears G-d. Thus, G-d blessed Iyov with wealth and happiness. It is said that Iyov owned:
• 7,000 sheep
• 3,000 camels
• 500 lambs
• 500 female donkeys
• multitudes (exact number not specified) of workers to watch over his animals.
We are told that in the East (bank of the Jordan) there lived no more fortunate man. Iyov had ten children: seven boys and three girls. Iyov was so religious that every time his children went to a party (where there was alcohol served), he would pray and make sacrifices to HASHEM in case they were
drunk and accidentally cursed G-d in their hearts.
G-d has decided to call a meeting for all his angels. Satan shows himself, and G-d and Satan begin a conversation about Iyov. Satan tells G-d that it is only because Iyov was blessed with wealth that he is a G-d-fearing man, otherwise, he would be just like any other Canaanite. G-d give Satan the permission to take everything away from Iyov — except he himself cannot be physically harmed — and to see if Iyov will lose faith, and (G-d forbid) blaspheme HASHEM.
That is exactly what Satan does. One day, Iyov's children are at a party at their eldest brother's house, and Iyov's animals are grazing in a field far away. A messenger came to Iyov, saying that his oxen and donkeys were raided upon, captured, and the shepherds were slain. As he was speaking, another
messenger came, telling Iyov that a fire had sprouted, and that all of his sheep and their shepherds were burned. As this messenger is speaking, yet another messenger comes to Iyov with news that his camels were captured, and the handlers were slain. As this messenger is speaking, the last messenger comes with the most tragic news: his sons and daughter were slain. Let's take inventory of what Iyov has now:
• No sheep
• No camels
• No lambs
• No donkeys
• No workers, and
• No children.
Job Chapter II
א

לע בציתהל ,םכ תב ןטשה םג אוביו ;הוהי לע הוהי.
1 Again it fell upon a day, that the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

ןעיו ;א בת הזמ יא ,ןטשה לא הוהי רמא יו ,ץראב ט-שמ ,רמא יו ,הוהי תא ןטשה הב ךלהתהמו.
2 And the LORD said unto Satan: 'From whence comest thou?' And Satan answered the LORD, and said: 'From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.'

לא ךבל תמש(ה ,ןטשה לא הוהי רמא יו רשיו םת שיא ץראב וה מכ ןיא יכ--בויא ידבע ,ותמ-תב קיז(חמ ונד עו ;ערמ רסו ,םיה לא ארי םנח ועלבל וב ינתיסתו.
3 And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a whole-hearted and an upright man, one that feareth God, and shunneth evil? and he still holdeth fast his integrity, although thou didst move Me against him, to destroy him without cause.'

4 And Satan answered the LORD, and said: 'Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

לאו ומצע לא עגו ,ךדי אנ חלש םלוא ךכרבי ,ךינפ לא א ל םא--ורשב.
5 But put forth Thy hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, surely he will blaspheme Thee to Thy face.'

:ךדיב ונה ,ןטשה לא הוהי רמא יו תא ,ךא
ר מש ושפנ.
6 And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Behold, he is in thy hand; only spare his life.'
ז
בויא תא ךיו ;הוהי ינפ ,תאמ ,ןטשה ,אציו ודFקדק (דעו) דע ולגר ףכמ ,ער ןיחשב.
7 So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot even unto his crown.

בש י ,אוהו ;וב דרגתהל ,שרח ול חקיו רפאה ךותב.
8 And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself therewith; and he sat among the ashes.

;ךתמ-תב קיז(חמ ךד ע ,ותשא ול רמא תו ת-מו ,םיה לא ךרב.
9 Then said his wife unto him: 'Dost thou still hold fast thine integrity? blaspheme God, and die.'

--ירבדת תולבנה תחא רבדכ ,הילא רמא יו ערה תאו ,םיה לאה תאמ לבקנ בוטה תא םג ,בויא אטח א ל תא ז לכב ;לבקנ א ל

10 But he said unto her: 'Thou speakest as one of the impious women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?' For all this did not Job sin with his lips. {P}

12 And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and threw dust upon their heads toward heaven.

תעבשו םימי תעבש ,ץראל ותא ובשיו
לדג יכ ,ואר יכ--רבד ,וילא רב ד ןיאו ;תוליל ד אמ באכה.
13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word unto him; for they saw that his grief was very great.
Summary: Job Chapter II
HASHEM convenes with his angles once again, and G-d comments to Satan that Iyov still hasn't cursed
HASHEM, regardless of the misfortunes that were brought upon him. Satan argues that G-d merely
touched Iyov's possessions, if He were to strike Iyov himself with something, then Iyov would turn away from HASHEM. G-d grants Satan's wish, but makes Satan promise to not harm Iyov's should (ie:
giving Iyov a spiritual ailment, or striking him as insane).
Satan strikes Iyov with a skin disease. It covered him completely, from his feet to his “crown”, or his hair. It is so painful, that Iyov has to take a thorn bush and used it to scratch his boils, in order to soothe the pain of his ailment. As he is sitting in mourning, his wife comes over to him, and tells him to simply give up and blaspheme HASHEM — G-d forbid — and to die. He admonishes her, telling her that she is
acting as one of the immoral and impious women do. He tells her that one must accept what G-d gives them, both good and bad, unconditionally. If G-d has given him fortune, He can take it away.
Iyov's three friends: Eliphaz of Teman (Yemen?), Bildan the Shuchite, and Zophar from Naamat, come to console Iyov. We are told that when they first see him, the do not recongnize him for his boils. They sat together for seven days and nights in silence.
Job Chapter XLII
א
רמא יו ;הוהי-תא בויא ןעיו . 1{S} Then Job answered the LORD, and said:

המזמ ךממ.
2 I know that Thou canst do every thing, and that no purpose can be withholden from Thee.

תעד-ילב :
;ןיבא א לו ,יתדגה ןכל א לו ,ינממ תואלפנ
עדא.
3 Who is this that hideth counsel without knowledge? {N}
Therefore have I uttered that which I understood not, things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

ינעידוהו.
4 Hear, I beseech Thee, and I will speak; I will demand of Thee, and declare Thou unto me.

;ךיתעמש ןז א-עמשל
ךתאר יניע ,התעו . 5but now mine eye see Thee; I had heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear;

--יתמחנו סאמא ,ןכ-לע
רפאו רפע-לע . 6I am dust and ashes. Wherefore I abhor my words, and repent, seeing {P}

7 And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite: 'My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not
spoken of Me the thing that is right, as My servant Job hath. {S}

8 Now therefore, take unto you seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to My servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt-offering; and My servant Job shall pray for you; for him will I accept, that I do not unto you aught unseemly; for ye have not spoken of Me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.'

9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did
according as the LORD commanded them; and the LORD accepted Job.

10 And the LORD changed the fortune of Job, when he prayed for his friends; and the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

לכו וית יחא לכו ויחא לכ וילא וא ביו
ול וד-ניו ,ותיבב םחל ומע ולכא יו ,םינפל ויעד י הוהי איבה רש(א הערה לכ לע ,ות א ומ(חניו םזנ ,שיאו ,תחא הטישק שיא ,ול ונתיו ;וילע דחא בהז.

12 So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning; and he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand female donkeys.

14 And he called the name of the first, Jemimah; and the name of the second, Keziah; and the name of the third, Keren-happuch.

15 And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.

16 And after this Job lived a hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.

Summary: Job Chapter XLII
The final chapter starts out as a poem, known in Hebrew as a Tikbolet, which is a poem in which each verse is divided into two sections: and both sections are synonymous for each other. In previous chapters, Iyov and HASHEM have been arguing with one another. Here, Iyov is finally admitting that
HASHEM has superiority, and that he is asking G-d to be a master over him.
The chapter then goes off to talk about what G-d told Iyov's companions, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. G-d admonishes them for not talking the correct way to Iyov, who desperately needed comfort and consolation. He then commands them to bring the following offering to Iyov, and then beseech Iyov that he should pray for forgiveness on their behalf. They did this, and were forgiven. The chapter then returns to Iyov, whose wealth has returned to him and more. Let's take inventory. Iyov now has:
• 14,000 sheep
• 6,000 camels
• 1,000 lambs
• 1,000 female donkeys, and
• 10 children, seven boys and ten girls. We are told that his children's handsomeness and beauty are unrivaled throughout the land.
Iyov lived 140 years, and lived to see four generations after him. We are told that he died a happy man.
