Interpret the following quote:

“…We pay a price for everything we get or

take in this world…”

-L.M. Montgomery

Anne of Green Gables, 1908

Everything we have and do comes with a

consequence.

(9)

L.M. Montgomery once said, “We pay a

price for everything that we get or take in

this world.”

In other words, everything

that we have and do comes with a

consequence.

This quotation proves to be

true in both life and literature.

Of Mice

and Men by John Steinbeck and

“The

Crucible,”

by Arthur Miller, demonstrate

that all of our actions and decisions has

some type of consequence.

(10)

Body Paragraph 1

The novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck demonstrates that all of our decisions and actions come with a consequence. One way this work shows the meaning of the quote is through characterization. Characterization is defined as the way in which an author develops a character both directly and indirectly. The protagonists, George and Lennie have been friends for a long time. George was

characterized as short, thin and smart man. Lennie was

characterized as tall, big and suffered from mental retardation. Lennie behaved like a child and George often took care of him. Since Lennie is portrayed as child-like, he often pet rabbits, mice and puppies too hard and killed them by accident. His behavior

escalated when he killed Curley’s wife by accident. Although Lennie wasn’t able to control himself, there were many negative

Body Paragraph 2

Another literary work that exemplifies that all of our

behaviors and choices come with a consequence is

Arthur Miller’s play,

“The Crucible.” This play

demonstrates the meaning of this critical lens through

conflict. Conflict is defined as problem that a character

faces. Examples of conflict include man vs. man and man

vs. society. The protagonist, John Proctor faced a man vs.

man conflict with the antagonist, Abigail Williams. Since

John and Abigail chose to have an affair, they were forced

to deal with the consequences. Elizabeth Proctor, John’s

wife, was very hurt by her husband’s decision. Also, John

had to worry about his tarnished reputation in his

Puritan town. Additionally, a man vs. society conflict

exists in The Crucible as well. Abigail decided to accuse

Tituba, a slave from barbados, of witchcraft as young

girls in the town were becoming mysteriously ill. Her

decision to falsely accuse Tituba led to a witch hunt in

which many members of the town were also falsely

accused, convicted and killed for witchcraft. As shown

through conflict in

“The Crucible,” each of the choices

we make and actions we take have some kind of

consequence.

Conclusion

L.M Montgomery accurately stated“…We pay a

price for everything we get or take in this world…”

Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” demonstrates

this quote through the use of conflict. John

Steinbeck’s, Of Mice and Men exemplify this quote

through the use of characterization.
