AnaLee and Tyson’s Great
Race
Today’s the big day! AnaLee and Tyson are going to have a
swimming race against Zack and Miya, a couple of big kids from the high school. They meet at Maili Beach and split up into teams. When the kids meet up, AnaLee stares in amazement at the high
schoolers, “Wow, they are REALLY big, I hope we can beat them!”

schoolers, “Wow, they are REALLY big, I hope we can beat them!”
They decide they will have two races. AnaLee and Zack will race first. Then it will be Tyson and Miya’s turn. Tyson and Miya paddle out to the “waiting rock” on boogie boards where they will wait for their turn to race. AnaLee and Zack wait on the beach.
As Tyson and Miya paddle out to the waiting rock, a small wave comes and
pushes them a little bit. Then a HUGE wave comes and pushes them almost
the whole way to the rock “Wow, that was an easy trip. That big wave
really made us go faster” Miya said to Zack.

Newton’s 2nd Law says if an unbalanced force acts on an object, the object will accelerate. The small wave puts a small force on the boogie boards and speeds it up a little. The big wave speeds them up a lot.

As they sit on the waiting rock, they see that there are forces everywhere!

All the kids yell together,
“Ready,Set,Go!” AnaLee and Zack both jump into the water and start swimming towards their teammate on the rock.
“Push really hard in the water, AnaLee, and the water will push you forward.” Zack kindly tried to help the younger swimmer.

The wave accelerated AnaLee much more than Zack and she took a big lead in the race!
AnaLee wins! She and Zack climb onto the “waiting rock”. AnaLee taps
Tyson on the back. “Now it is your turn!”. Zack and Miya jump into the water.
“Go Tyson Go!” yell Tyson’s friends. “Go Miya Go” yell Miya’s friends. Tyson tries to copy what AnaLee was doing to try and go faster through the
water. He learned that if he pushes the water with his hand then the water
The race is over and Tyson and AnaLee win the race. In order for AnaLee and

Everyone came over to see if they were ok. They looked up at all of their
friends and laughed. Zack helped AnaLee up. They watch the end of the
race between Tyson and Miya. They see that maybe both of them were
going to win but Tyson starts to paddle faster. He can tell that Miya is tired
Tyson paddles and paddles. “Come on Tyson! TYSON! TYSON!” Everyone
cheers Tyson on. Tyson paddles and paddles. He reaches the beach.
Tyson goes over to Miya and shakes her hand. “Good race, Miya.” Tyson also told her that she was swimming so fast that he wasn’t sure whether or not
“Hey, let’s go over to my house. I think that my mom is making some food for us.”
said Tyson. They all agree that swimming made them very VERY hungry.
This day was the best day of their lives because they all made some new
