Qualifications explained
HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE (HNC) HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) DEGREES
HNC courses studied on a full-time basis take between 18 weeks and one year to achieve. You can also study on a part-time basis (part-time day study, evening classes or a combination of the two). Part-time students normally take two to three years to achieve an HNC.
Upon successful completion of an HNC you may have the opportunity to progress to the second year of an HND or to the second year of a degree.
Edinburgh College offers degree level courses both at College and in partnership with universities across Scotland.
With our associate student degrees you study the first two years of your degree course at Edinburgh College with a guaranteed place at one of our partner universities to complete the final two years, subject to meeting the conditions. You will still complete your degree in four years, the same as if you went directly to university.
HND courses offer a more in-depth range of study than HNC. An HND is awarded on successful completion of 30 credits and usually takes up to two years to compete on a full-time basis. Some HND courses are also available on a part-time basis.
Upon successful completion there may be the opportunity to progress straight into year 3 of a degree.

When I started at Edinburgh College I enrolled in the HNC Accounting course. I had originally planned to go straight to
university after completing the HNC, but after careful consideration and discussion with my lecturers I decided to defer university for a year and went on to study the HND Accounting course.
Having completed the HND, I began studying accounting at Edinburgh Napier University in 2012, with direct entry into third year and I graduated in July 2014. A month later, I started working with a Chartered Accounting firm in Edinburgh as a Tax Trainee. I am currently working towards attaining the Association of Taxation Technician (ATT) qualification and in the future I plan to become a Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA). Shonagh Donaldson HND Accounting

I am currently on the Associate Degree programme for BA (Hons) Event Management and I have just completed my second year. I chose to take a place on the associate programme as I decided unlike some of my friends, I wasn’t ready to take the full jump and go straight to university. This course enabled me to do two years at college and go straight into third year at university so I can complete my degree.
This course has given me the chance to realise that I have the ability to succeed and that I am prepared to go university and face any new challenges that may arise.
