Scholarship
Guide
Published by the California Masonic Foundation
Grand Lodge F. & A.M. of California
November 2014
Dear Reader,
The Masons of California and other Masonic-related organizations have been dedicated to
education from our very beginnings. In the 1600s, education was literally a life-or-death
matter as Masons learned how to safely construct castles and cathedrals in Europe through
one-on-one apprenticeships.
As society progressed and public education was born, Masons were pivotal in enacting
necessary changes for improvement. In California for example, a Mason, John Swett
worked to organize teachers’ institutes, establish a teacher certification system, win
support for school taxes, write a revised school law, and provide for textbooks for
California public schools.
Today, we continue our support of public education by coordinating Public Schools Month
in April and helping to fund programs like Teachers of the Year, Raising a Reader,
Firefighters in Safety Education (FISE), and others. Most importantly for you, the Masons
of California and other Masonic-related organizations have awarded over a million dollars
in scholarships and loans to students every year.
This guide is intended to serve as a resource for youth pursuing higher education as a
means to improve their lives and the lives of others in their communities. Included are
descriptions of various scholarship programs offered by Masonic-related organizations for
applicants with strong academic backgrounds and high financial need.
Please turn to the next page to read more about how you can use this guide.
I hope this helps in your quest to obtain a higher education. Best wishes on all of your
future endeavors!
Sincerely,
Arthur Weiss

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE
The scholarship programs mentioned in this guide have been divided into three groups: the
first being for
high school seniors
, the second for
undergraduate students,
and the third for
graduate students
.
In the following pages, you will find a chart summarizing all scholarships for each group.
The first column indicates if applicants must be of a certain gender; the second indicates
what type of degree applicants must be pursuing; and the third indicates if applicants must
be a member of good standing in a Masonic Youth Order and/or have a relative who is a
Mason.
Underneath that chart, you will find a second chart describing scholarships which are
looking for a particular type of student and consequently have very specific criteria for their
applicants.
Once you have determined the scholarship programs for which you may be eligible, go the
page listed for more information about requirements and the application process.
If you are a HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR, go to page iv.
If you are an UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT, go to page vi.
If you are a GRADUATE STUDENT, go to page viii.
It is strongly recommended that you fill out the common inquiry form on the
Find Masonic Scholarships
home page on the Freemason website
. There, you
will be guided through a series of five questions that will pinpoint scholarships for which
you may be eligible. After selecting the ones you are interested in, you will be prompted to
enter your contact information and a request for an application will be forwarded to each of
those organizations on your behalf.
If you have already filled out a common inquiry form and are now looking through the
scholarship guide for more information about specific scholarships, please refer to the
index organized by Masonic-related organizations located on page 25 for page numbers.
For more information or questions, contact the California Masonic Foundation at
