General Introduction

With God’ Grace, and with the dedicated efforts of all the previous and current school supervisors, school managers, principals, teachers and staff members, HTYC has continued to offer a provision of quality education to young people, serving the community of Hong Kong.

Since the expansion of the school in 2003, it is now operating on a 24-class basis with a total of 794 students in 2014-2015. Since 2009, through 2012 when the first cohort of S.6 students graduated, to date, HTYC has been successfully implementing the new senior secondary (NSS) curriculum with a satisfactory curriculum framework and encouraging public examination results. With English as the major medium of instruction, HTYC provides a sound nurturing English learning environment that fosters academic pursuits and personal growth. Throughout, HTYC maintains its mission and visions as follows:

Mission

The School shall offer, in a Christian context, an all-rounded education that encourages and enhances the development and growth of the students morally, academically, physically, socially, aesthetically, and spiritually, and promotes their sense of commitment to the community and mankind.

Achievements and Reflections

Founded on Christian love and mission, HTYC upholds the importance of quality education in the holistic development of young people and continues to provide a rich nurturing secondary school education to achieve this life-building endeavour. The major concerns for 2014-2015 were: (i) students’ deep approach to learning, and (ii) students’ spirit to serve.

Building a solid foundation for fruitful learning

competitions on English and Chinese debating, English drama and puppetry, Chinese drama appreciation, drama workshop, to name just a few. HTYC also continued her collaboration with The Quality School Improvement Project of CUHK to sharpen curricular and pedagogical practices in Mathematics to cater for learners’ diversity. Structurally, performance grouping arrangements for junior English, Chinese and Mathematics allowed for effective accommodation of learners’ diversity and the acceleration of the strong learners, while flexible grouping arrangements were employed to enhance learning effectiveness in the light of diversity in the classroom.

Instilling aspirations through careers & life planning

Another important dimension of life enhancement in teenage development is career exploration. Young people need a direction for their growth, an aspiration, and a hope. Further Education and Careers Guidance Committee of HTYC had organized a series of systematically planned programmes for HTYC students, starting at Form 1, aiming at fostering their awareness of future development and their aspirations. Programmes also helped train students in soft skills, self-understanding, goal-setting, and decision-making. There were job simulations, aptitude tests, careers projects, career mapping, etc., together with large-scaled thematic projects on interesting careers: previously, on TV series production and this year, fashion design. Outstanding alumnus and fashion designer, Mr. Matt Hui, guided a group of students this year in their career explorations and in launching a fashion show, inviting tremendous responses from students. Again, the S.2 Careers Expo in April 2015 had attracted a large number of students, which in turns strengthened the notion of individual planning for careers development and further studies among the presenting and visiting students.

Lesson observations to boost professional developments

Principal continued to administer lesson observations of all teachers to facilitate professional dialogues on learning and teaching effectiveness. The schema for leson observation was geared towards the major concern of “deep approach to learning”, addressing lesson design, teacher-student interactions, the provision of challenging tasks to invite problem-solving, and to encouraging students to ask questions which are essential to learning. Indeed, the practice had brought about meaningful dialogues to make improvements.

Passing on God’s love through community concerns

HTYC puts extra efforts to help students recognize in a fulfilling life the importance of giving and caring---a legacy of love for others. In actions, students participate in community services. 2014-15 was the second year of the 6-year plan of community concerns, with a focus on “caring for the physically disable”. Apart from the inspiring talk by barrier-breaker Mr. Chow Chi Ming, students had paid a number of visits to SAHK LOHAS Garden to show their concerns and support for the

target needy people and had more chances to express sincere concerns for them. These actions had helped anchor in students a mission of care and love, essential in leadership development.

Testifying God’s Grace with outstanding achievements

HTYC has been blessed with outstanding achievements of students in academic and non-academic domains. In HKDSE Exam 2015, subject results were encouraging. JUPAS results showed that 51.2% of S.6 graduates had JUPAS degree offers and 14.4% had sub-degree offers. The best score was achieved by Mr. Law Ming Chak, with 47 points (5 X 5** and 2 X 5*) and he was admitted to The School of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong.

Students also had outstanding achievements in external competitions. To highlight some of the outstanding accomplishments, in music first, School A Cappella Team won Silver Diploma in Hong Kong International A Cappella Contest. Three S.2 students explored the application of science knowledge in cooking and won 2nd Runner-up in SciChef Cooking Challenge organized by The University of Hong Kong and Go.Asia. In EF English Proficiency Index assessment launched, four S.6 students attained Advanced or Upper Advanced Level Certificates, with the highest score being 97% of language accuracy. In YMCA Youth Leadership Development Award Scheme, the HTYC team won Championship, for the 8th time, with a very impressive social investigation on Urban Bee Keepers. The scouts won Championship in Kowloon Region Venture Trophy 2015. For individuals, S.4 Wong Tsz Ying won 1st Runner-up (Senior) in Computer App Programming and S.2 Chiu Wan Chun won Championship in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2015 Youth Dash.

Braving new challenges with a legacy of love

There has been turmoil in the education environment. One crucial dissonance has been the drastic decrease in the P.6 student population. In the face of this, HTYC, surprisingly, recorded a rising figure of 418 applications for 40 S.1 discretionary places (ratio: 11:1), which was a rise compared with the figure in the previous year. Indeed, the school experienced very encouraging community support. Under God’s never failing protection, with conjoint efforts of staff members, and growing recognition by community partners, HTYC will continue to brave every tide of challenges, keeping her mission of care and love for the young generation.

In 2015-2016, HTYC would continue to strengthen students’ capacity for learning. It would be the first year in a new round of 3-year School Development Plan (2015-2018), and the major concerns are (i) students’ motivation to learn, and (ii) students’ spirit to serve, guided by the thematic slogan “Learing with aspiration; learning with compassion.

students with a view to nurturing IT elites. This would go well with the revamp of computer network of the school in 2015-2016 and the launching of whole-campus WiFi facilities in 2016-2017.

2015-2016 would be the 3rd year in the 6-year plan of community concerns and the focus would be “caring for the elderly”. HTYC would collaborate with Enting Elderly Day Care Centre at Homantin Estate of The Hong Kong Chinese Church of Christ to provide trainings and service opportunities to students.

In a world of drastic changes and harsh challenges, HTYC would continue to nurture young people of the community so that they would become good citizens of Hong Kong with knowledge and integrity. Clearly, we can attribute all our previous developments and future advances to the conjoint efforts of all HTYC people and to our never-failing God.
