A reliable operating system

The NetVanta 1000 Series employs the ADTRAN OS for advanced standards-based functionality and ease of integration into multi-vendor net-works. Two full versions of the OS can coexist on a NetVanta device, simplifying the testing of newly released versions and permitting system backup. New enhancements to firmware can be implemented throughout a network using FTP/TFTP or HTTP from a central location.

A flexible, modular platform: NIMs and DIMs

A single WAN access slot in the back of an ADTRAN integrated switch-router chassis supports a variety of interchangeable NetVanta Network Interface Modules (NIMs) to terminate the wide area connection. NIMs include an Integral NTU for E1, FE1, Serial, or ADSL interface over ATM (ADSL-only), Frame Relay, or PPP networks. These modules are field upgradable and remotely configurable. TDM voice support is also available for G.703 standards.

Optional analog and ISDN Dial Backup Interface Modules (DIMs) support business con-tinuity and disaster recovery in mission-critical applications. Available in a plug-on form factor, these modules dial into any PPP-compliant device. Options available include Euro-ISDN

restoral via the PSTN at 64 kbps, and analog modem restoral at up to 33.6 kbps. The ADSL NIM may also be used for higher-speed broadband backup.

The NetVanta 1224ST, 1224ST PoE, 1224STR, and 1224STR PoE feature Gigabit uplink ports that accept industry-standard SFP modules, available from ADTRAN and third-party sources. These modules may be used independently or in conjunction with copper interfaces to provide uplinks to upstream switches.

Full-featured routing functionality

NetVanta switch-routers include an integral IP access router for cost-effective Internet access, corporate Frame Relay, or point-to-point connec-tivity. These devices utilize industry-standard IP routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, and RIP.

NetVanta switch-routers include a high-perform-ance stateful inspection firewall to protect against network intrusion, while enabling employee access to valuable corporate informa-tion resources. This stringent line of defense identifies and protects against common Denial of Service (DoS) attempts, such as TCP SYN flooding, IP spoofing, ICMP redirect, ping of death, and IP reassembly problems.

Affordable and secure connectivity across the Internet

VPN functionality can be added to all NetVanta switch-router models with an optional upgrade. This upgrade includes IPSec Virtual Private Networking (VPN) with advanced security features, such as DES/3DES/AES encryption and advanced user authentication.

The NetVanta 1224ST and 1224STR add

Gigabit Ethernet uplink capability using integral 1000Base-T ports or SFP modules for single- or multi-mode fiber applications. These Gigabit ports may be used for VLAN trunking to an upstream switch, for link redundancy, or to connect high-speed ports on servers or other devices. Link Aggregation provides higher speed links from wiring closets to computer rooms. The NetVanta 1224STR provides inter-VLAN routing, as well as Internet connectivity via a modular WAN interface.
