the 16th time the two teams have played. This is also the 16th season of Blazers football, so needless to say the Bulldogs are a very familiar foe. Belhaven has played Cumberland every year since the inception of the program.

Belhaven owns a 2-2 record against the Bulldogs over the last four games. Two of those contests have gone to overtime, including last year’s 36-30 win by the Bulldogs. The Blazers two wins were recorded in 2011 and 2009 with final scores of 34-21 and 7-6 in OT respectively.

Last season, the Blazers fought back from a 10 point second half deficit to tie the game with 21 seconds left in regulation to force the extra frame. Unfortunate-ly, Belhaven wasn’t able to come up with a matching touchdown in overtime to prolong or win the game. Running back Kadero Edley had a breakout game that day for the Blazers. He rushed for 137 yards and one touchdown. As a team, Belhaven ran for 247 yards.

Belhaven enters this weekend having lost two straight games, including a 41-17 loss at home to 8th ranked University of the Cumberlands (KY) last week. The Blazers, who were ranked 21st in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Top 25 poll, fell out of the top 25 when the first regular season poll was released earlier this week.

Although its just week four of the season, Saturday’s game is crucial for the Blazers. It’s the Mid-South Conference West Division Opener and the team must find a way to get out to a quick start and pick up a win at home. After Saturday, Belhaven goes on the road for three straight games and will not play again at home until October 26th.

Last week, the Blazers knew they had thier work cut out for them against the University of the Cumber-lands (KY) and the Patriots proved to be too much. Belhaven had to play catchup from the outset and despite a rough first half stat wise, were in the game 14-7 at the break. A solid drive by Belhaven, culminat-ing in a three yard TD run by quarterback Darrell Wil-liams that made it a one score game. Unfortunately, two third quarter touchdowns by the Patriots put the game out of reach.

Junior running back Aaron Spikes led the offense with his first 100 yard game as a Blazer. Spikes carried the ball 24 times for 119 yards and one touchdown. He averaged five yards per carry. Senior wideout Justin Kenyon had a solid night catching the football, reeling in four passes for 61 yards.

“Each week the goal is to improve and we saw signs of that tonight against a very good football team,” Belhaven Head Coach Joe Thrasher said after the game. “I’m proud of these young men and the effort they gave tonight and believe we are headed in the right direction.”

Cumberland is also looking to get on track this week-end and is in search of win number one. The Bulldogs are 0-2 after a 63-7 loss to NCAA Division I Tennes-see Tech and a 41-10 setback to the University of the Cumberlands. Cumberland had a bye last weekend and is on the road for the third straight game. Cumberland is under the direction of first year Head Coach Donnie Suber, who took over for Dewayne Alexanders during the offseason. Suber brings a bit of a new look on offense with a base three wide receiver set compared to the double-wing which was a staple for the Bulldogs during the past few seasons. Defensively, Cumberland features a 4-3 front that’s led by defensive end Nick Lennox. The redshirt junor has accounted for 18 tackles, including two for lost
