ST. CLARE’S PRO-LIFE GROUP THOUGHT OF THE WEEK:

“The intentional killing of even one innocent pre-born human is never licit or justified, and is never necessary,

because America can and must provide equal care for both a pregnant mother and her pre-born

child—with no exception.”

OBLIGATION

The obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains suspended until further notice. If you are uncomfortable

attending Mass, please by all means it is ok to stay home.

HELP US KEEP OUR CHURCH CLEAN

We are glad you feel comfortable coming to church and one day soon more of us will be back. In the meantime, if you attend a service here at Saint Clare’s Church please do not leave discarded tissues, bulletins, worship aids or other trash in

the pews. With the infection rate continuing to climb it is very important that our cleaners and everyone else who attends services, are safe and not exposed to any potential hazards.

Thank you and stay safe.

NEW RECTORY HOURS

Due to the pandemic our office hours have changed. Until further notice the Rectory will be

closed on Thursdays.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday we will be opened from 9am to 5pm. Saturday and Sunday remain the same.

OUR SCRIPTURE READING AT MASS THIS WEEKEND

The Book of the Prophet Jonah

Chap 3, Verses 1-5, 10

The Ninevites turn from their evil ways in response to Jonah’s message.

The first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians

Chap 7, Verses 29-31

The world in its present form is passing away.

The Gospel of Mark

Chap 1, Verses 14-20

Jesus proclaims, “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” The new disciples abandon their nets

and follow him.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

“Ordinary” is not always a desirable adjective. Who would not

be insulted to receive a thank-you note for your “ordinary

birthday gift,” or “the ordinary hospitality at the dinner party?”

No restaurant advertises its “ordinariness,” no car dealer seats

a customer at the steering wheel and whispers, “Look how

ordinary it is!” Yet here we are in “Ordinary Time.” The word

carries a different meaning here: it does not mean these days

are dull, boring, pedestrian, uninteresting. It means “ordinal,”

or “numbered” Sundays, a season of the year when we follow

the story of Jesus’ life and ministry in an ordered way, with each Sunday assigned

an ordinal number.

You can amaze your friends with this example of Catholic arithmetic: the “Ordinary

Sundays” begin with the last Sunday of Christmas, the Baptism of the Lord, continue

until the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, and resume after a cluster of feasts

following Pentecost Sunday. The numbers are calculated by counting backwards

from the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Thirty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Now you know there is nothing “ordinary” about “Ordinary Time!”

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

A very familiar sight I’m seeing these days is the image of dead Christmas trees on

the sidewalk. Now that the Christmas season is over, the decorations are being put away,

the trees come down and are either thrown away (real trees) or stored away (fake trees).

Not to mention, the radio stations have now resumed playing the garbage contemporary

music we are all accustomed to.

As a kid I always found this time depressing because I know it was a whole year until

Christmas. But now I don’t feel like that. I look forward to all of the seasons God gives us

and the unique activities each offers. Even though February is a cold month, we begin Lent

on the 17th. In March we have Confirmations and April brings us sunshine and warmth– and

Easter.

In May we will have First Holy Communions and June is Graduation. I have high

hopes that with the vaccine becoming more and more available, these events will slowly go

back to what they were. After that, Summer begins and hopefully you will be able to travel

and get a well-deserved vacation.

My greatest hope is that by the time Christmas 2021 arrives, the Mets will have won

the World Series. That of course might take divine intervention.

My point is that’s a lot to look forward

to this year. God knows how faithful you

are and how devoted you were to Him

during the pandemic, and He won’t forget it.

Perhaps we can all watch a little less

news and pray a little more for peace in

2021.

I am including a prayer

against anxiety and fear by the great

Saint Francis de Sales. I think you’ll

enjoy it.

God bless you,

SAINTS WE CELEBRATE THIS WEEK

SAINT ANGELA MERICI

January 27th

Angela Merici was born in 1474 in a small town in Italy. Her sister and she were orphans when she was 15 years old. Young Angela was very distressed when her sister suddenly died without receiving the Last Rites of the Church and prayed that her sister’s soul rest in peace. At that time she had

a vision that her sister was in heaven with the saints. Another vision revealed to her that she was to found an association of virgins who were to devote their lives to the religious training of young girls.

Angela founded the Company of Saint Ursula in 1535 in Brescia, Italy, in which women dedicated their lives to the service of the Church through the education of girls. From this organization later sprang the monastic Order of Ursulines, whose nuns established places of prayer and learning throughout the world. Merici taught her

companions to serve God, but to remain in the world, teaching the girls of their own neighborhood, and to practice a religious form of life in their own homes. The Ursulines opened orphanages and schools. Her patronage includes sickness, handicapped people, loss of parents, courage, strength and determination.

SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS

January 28th

Saint Thomas Aquinas spent most of his childhood in the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino, where his parents placed him as a prospective monk when he was about five years old. Nine years later he entered the University of Naples, becoming

acquainted there with the Dominican order, which he joined when he was about 20 years old. St. Thomas Aquinas was the greatest of the Scholastic philosophers. However, he never considered himself a philosopher, and criticized philosophers, whom he saw as pagans, for always “falling short of the true and proper wisdom to be found in Christian revelation.” Much of his work bears upon philosophical topics, and in this sense may be characterized as

philosophical. He produced a comprehensive synthesis of Christian Theology ans Aristotelian philosophy that influ-enced Roman Catholic doctrine for centuries and was adopted as the official philosophy of the church in 1917. Thomas’ philosophical thought has exerted enormous influence on subsequent Christian theology, expecially that of the Catholic Church. Therefore it should come as no surprise that Saint Thomas Aquinas is the patron saint of Academics and Education.
