ABSTRACT
Previous records and 1920 newly collected specimens formed the basis of this survey of the Orthoptera of
Şanlıurfa
(Urfa) province in southeastern Turkey. Eighty-six species and subspecies were recorded, both as the result of the field study and use of published data; they belong to seven families and fifty genera. Eleven genera and thirty-two species were recorded for the first time fromŞanlıurfa.
Seven species were recorded as new for the southeastern Anatolia. Eleven species with subspecies are endemic to Anatolia. Eremial faunal elements are dominant in the area.KEY WORDS: Orthoptera -

INTRODUCTION
§anliurfa (Urfa) is a moderate sized province of Turkey, having an area of 18 584 km2. Its climate is generally arid
or semiarid, but subhumid in some restricted areas around the Euphrates, which passes close to the pro-vince in the western and northwestern parts. The annual precipitation ranges between 4 and 73 mm in autumn and spring, respectively. Minimum and maximum tem-peratures are -12.4° C, in January, 46.5° C, in July. The humidity varies from 36% to 76%. The province is situat-ed in the Irano-Turanian vegetation zones and Arthe-misia herba-alba Steppe is the main plant species cover-ing this area (Akman & Ketenoglu, 1986).
It is interesting to note that the study area is a natural pathway, used by syrio-eremial faunistic elements to move into Anatolia (Uvarov, 1921; de Lattin, 1967; Weid-ner, 1969; Demirsoy, 1977, 1979, 1996; Çiplak et al.,
1993, 1996a, b). Roughly speaking, Upper Mesopotamia is the upper natural range border of the syrio-eremial faunistic elements, and the occurrence of Thmethis pul-chripennis asiaticus, Saga ephippigera, Pyrgomorpha
spp., Eremopeza sp., Locusta migratoria, Dociostaurus (Notostaurus) anatolicus, Derycorys tibialis, Prionotropis maculinervis urfaensis, and Sphingonotus spp. supports this hypothesis. On the other hand, Mediterranean and boreal faunistic elements are very rare in the study area. There are a few endemic species recorded from the Çanliurfa province, i.d. Isophya sikorai, Poecilimon rag-gei, Scotodrymadusa maculata, S. rammei, Platydeis (s. str.) sinuata, Platydeis (Squamiana) kurmana, Gryllus urfaensis, Tetrix turcica, Acrida anatolica, Dociostau-rus (s. str.) salmani, Dasyhippus escalerai. The uniform topography and uniform vegetation of the area do not act as a barrier for species distribution.
The orthopteroid insects of Turkey have been com-paratively well studied. The greatest contributions to this were made by Uvarov (1921, 1929, 1930, 1934), Ramme (1951), Karabag (1949, 1958, 1975), Weidner (1969), Demirsoy (1975, 1977, 1979, 1996), Salman (1978), Gümü§suyu (1978, 1981), Çiplak & Demirsoy (1990, 1995, 1996) and Çiplak et al. (1993, 1996a, b). The first significant information about the Orthoptera of §anhurfa was provided by Uvarov (1934) who reported about 30 species and subspecies, while Karabag (1958) included approximately 44 species for §anhurfa. Since then, a few studies have been carried out regarding §anliurfa and adjacent provinces (Karabag et al., 1971;
Demirsoy, 1977; Gümü§suyu, 1981; Harz, 1983).
The present study gives an updated list of the Or-thoptera recorded from §anhurfa, which is located in southeastern Anatolia (Mesopotamian part of Turkey) (Fig. 1). A total of 1920 specimens (excluding nymphs) were collected by the authors during 1996-1998.

Specimens were collected in the field according to the standard method during 1996-1998, and prepared for laboratory examina-tion (Salman, 1978; Çiplak 1992; Çiplak & Demirsoy, 1996). Most of these specimens are deposited in the private collection of the Biology Department of Harran University (ijanhurfa, Turkey), the"; rest of them is in the Zoological Museums, Departments of Biolo- ' gy, Akdeniz University and Hacettepe University.
When localities of newly collected material are given, the
fol-lowing format is used: PROVINCE: CITY (or TOWN), Village (and/or
areas), altitude (m a.s.l.), collection date, specimens.

Distribution: The nominative subspecies is distributed
all over the Mediterranean region, reaching central Europe, and as far as China to the east. New to §anliurfa province.
Discussion: This subspecies is common throughout
Turkey. P. (s. str.) intermedia intermedia and P. (s. str.)
intermedia mesopotamica taxonomically seem to be a
serious problem for southeast Anatolia. These sub-species were reported as belonging to the same provinces by Ramme (1951) and Karabag (1958). If both subspecies occur together in this part of Turkey and elsewhere, they have to be considered as two distinct species. Previous records of mesopotamica from south-east Anatolia are doubtful: according to Zeuner (1941) and Harz (1969), it was mentioned that the structure of the 7t h sternite in the female specimens of
mesopotami-ca is more or less repeated for the 6th sternite. With
re-gard to this character of sternite, the material collected from §anhurfa does not seem to bear the above-men-tioned feature. On the other hand, Ramme (195D dis-cussed the length of the tegmina of mesopotamica, which he himself collected in Diyarbakir and some provinces of Turkey. In our material this character agrees with his identification. However, the length of the tegmi-na is very variable within the same population. From the standpoint of the features mentioned for intermedia, it is possible to consider the population of §anhurfa as be-longing to P. (s. str.) intermedia intermedia.

Discussion: These specimens were compared with the
type specimens of P. sinuata in the Museum für Natur-kunde, Berlin. However, the type specimens themselves are very different from other species of the subgenus

Distribution: This species is distributed in Turkey,

Discussion: There are many different karyotypes for
forms or species of the genus in southern Europe and Russia. We could not analyse the karyotype of our spec-imens, but were informed by Naskrecki and Ünal (1995) that the species found in Hatay belongs to karyotype 2nd1 = 14 (X-Y). On the other hand, Willemse (1984)
stated that the cryptic species of the genus have 2ncf = 14 (X-Y) karyotype in Anatolia. Considering these find-ings, our specimens from §anhurfa probably belong to such a population.

Distribution: Recorded from Turkey and Syria.
Re-ported from §anhurfa province (Uvarov, 1934 as Tmethis
gibber gibber, Karabag, 1958; Demirsoy, 1977).
Discussion: Various authors stated that the genus Ere-mopeza has two subspecies living in Çanlmrfa (Uvarov,
1934; Karabag, 1958; Weidner, 1969; Demirsoy, 1977). All of our specimens were collected from the same area and belong to the subspecies E. gibbera gibbera, not E.
gibbera lata. The old literature, reporting that E. gibbera lata lived in §anhurfa, is probably based on
misidentifi-cation. Without geographic isolation between them, it is impossible for these subspecies to live in the same area; so, their status has to be revised.

§anhurfa (Ramme, 1951; Karabag, 1958; Demirsoy, 1977; Harz, 1983). It is impossible for these three subspecias to be distributed together over such a very limited area. The specimens collected by us from this area belong to
C. barbarus cephalotes. The morphological variations in
the populations of C. barbarus cephalotes are large.
