Job Description

Recreation Specialist

General Recreation

Part - Time

MISSION STATEMENT:

As the heart of the community, the Eaton Area Park & Recreation District strives to inspire and encourage healthy lifestyles by serving the physical, social, and mental needs of all ages.

SCOPE OF POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator of Athletics & General Recreation, the Recreation Specialist – General Recreation will aid in scheduling, directing and supervising recreation programs and community events. The Recreation Specialist will oversee planning, implementation, budget and evaluation of new programs and special events for the community. One of the main areas of concentration for the Recreation Specialist will be the State-Licensed day camp. Employees at this level provide instructional and program supervision which may include the coordination of schedules and activities in assigned area. Recreation Specialist must be 18 years of age or older.

Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator of Athletics & General Recreation

Supervision Exercised: Assists in supervision Part Time/Seasonal – Camp Assistant Director & Part Time – Camp Counselors

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Wage Range: $14.00-$18.00/Hr Part-Time Hours/Week Committed: 10 – 15 hr/week (Flexible)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs a variety of duties associated with instructing, leading, or supervising Eaton’s Explorer programs. • Assists the Licensed Camp Director in performing specialized instruction and program supervision for

State-Licensed programs. This may include coordination of staff and participants in daily activities.

• Knowledge of latest trends and techniques. Assists in evaluating program effectiveness and suggests new activities or techniques.

• Assists in the planning program curriculum and conducts individualized or group instruction in areas of expertise.

• May use knowledge and expertise to modify class activities for various participant skill levels. • Sets up and takes down required program equipment.

• May serve as opening or closing staff members for State-Licensed Camp.

• Remains composed and makes sound judgements in emergency or non-emergency situation.

• Responds to emergency situations, administers first aid, CPR, or other medical attention as needed, and completes incident reports. May be certified to administer medication per State Licensing regulations. • Provides exceptional guest service to all participants. Responds to information requests, comments, and

complaints from participants.

• Maintains frequent communications with other staff within the Community Center and District and reports any issues or concerns with inventory, facility conditions, policies and incidents to supervisory staff as needed. • Ensures the safety of guests and program participants by enforcing all rules and policies with staff and guests.

Provides a safe, effective, and supportive learning environment for diverse participants with varying skill levels. • Plans class curriculum and conducts individualized or group instruction in areas of expertise.

• Ensures participants are performing activities correctly and safely.

• Assists with hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, and evaluating part-time and seasonal personnel; assigns work, as necessary.

• Sets up and takes down program equipment as needed.

• Maintains program related records and reports, including accurate class attendance records.

• Conducts and attends a variety of training seminars, staff meetings, clinics, and community meetings.

• Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; distribute supplies and equipment; assist with ordering supplies and equipment for recreation programs.

• May be considered as a subject expert for area of specialization and may train other staff on specific knowledge. • Inputs registration program and events data into registration and facility software to ensure accurate and

up-to-date information.

• Receives, investigates, and responds to complaints pertaining to recreation center personnel, facilities, programs, and program participants. Prepares reports to document accidents and incidents. Responds to inquiries and concerns to ensure effective communication and timely resolution of problems.

• Supervises registration for recreation programs including establishing protocols, registration times and schedules.

• Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates special events and general recreation programs for the community. • Ensures staff and patron adherence to operating policies, procedures, and code of conduct.

• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

• Recreation Specialist for General Recreation must be 18+ years or older.

• One to three years of progressively responsible professional experience within a recreation, leisure, or community setting.

• Seeking individuals studying or pursuing a career in childhood development, school-aged teaching, recreation management, leisure activities, or similar.

Encouraged Qualification – Director Qualified for Eaton’s Explorers

o Must have three months of verifiable education or training in work with school-age children in such areas as recreation, education, scouting or 4-H; and must have completed at least one of the following qualifications:

▪ A four (4) year college degree with a major such as recreation, outdoor education, education with a specialist in art, elementary or early childhood education, or a subject in the human service field; or

▪ Two years of college training and six (6) months (910) hours of satisfactory and verifiable full-time or equivalent part-full-time, paid or volunteer, experience, since attaining the age of eighteen (18) in the care and supervision of four (4) or more children; or

▪ Three years (5460 hours) of satisfactory and verifiable full-time or equivalent part-time paid or volunteer, experience and one of the following qualifications:

• Complete six semester hours, or nine quarter hours in course work from a regionally accredited college or university; or

• Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

o Valid vehicle operator’s license and satisfactory driving record o First Aid, CPR, and AED certification

REQUIRED KNOWEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Knowledge of the current principles, practices, teaching methods, and techniques specific to planning and teaching the program of instruction in areas of expertise.

• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, and policies, specifically State licensing requirements.

• Ability to effectively present camp curriculum.

• Ability to adapt activities appropriate for a wide variety of participant skill levels.

• Demonstrate time management skills by beginning and completing assigned shifts and/or utilizing program time effectively.

• Ability to work under stressful situations and conditions; ability to stay calm; must have excellent conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to maintain certifications.

• Ability to plan and organize safe and effective class curriculum and activities. Ability to effectively present class curriculum, demonstrate proper techniques, and respond to questions specific to the program of instruction. • Ability to provide outstanding customer service in a fast paced, chaotic environment to a diverse guest

population.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, and EAPRD / EACC staff. Including the ability to follow directions and demonstrate professional behavior.

• Ability to communicate, follow and enforce all rules, regulations, and policies. Ability to recognize safety hazards and sanitation issues to notify supervisors.

• Ability to complete and maintain well organized daily records, logs, and incident reports. • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently; bilingual skills desired but not required.

• Ability to operate all assigned equipment properly and safely; ability to set up, maintain, and tear down activity related equipment.

• Demonstrated skill in the use of standard office equipment, computers, and various application programs including recreation related specialty software applications.

• This position is subject to the Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Program. This includes pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.
