INTERPROFESSIONALEDUCATIONANDPRACTICE(IPEP) – Prepared by Shelley Smith, Assistant Director of IPEP

IPEDay

IPE Day is scheduled for Thursday, March 5 from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. The theme is “Health Promotion is Within Reach”. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Victor Sierpina. To date, 26 workshops have been confirmed and will be led by faculty from all four schools and health system staff members. Interprofessional Scholars Program members will serve as leaders for IPE Day.

InterprofessionalScholarsProgram

An Interprofessional Scholars meeting was Thursday, January 22, 2015 with 39 in attendance representing all four schools. The purpose of the meeting was to update the program, provide assistance to students on projects, and discuss IPE Day. Students will provide leadership for the IPE Day as part of program requirements.

Nick Burns, SOM student and president of Frontera de Salud gave students information about the organization which was recently added as an IPEP activity. The association with Frontera de Salud will provide scholars with the opportunity to work on interprofessional teams for Senior Care which provides interprofessional care to the Holland House and Frontera de Salud, weekend trips to Brownsville, Texas to provide interprofessional care.

Students participating in these events will write reflections, discuss the event with their mentors, gain mentors’ approval and document the event on their e‐portfolios.

The IPE Day Planning Committee, comprised of Interprofessional Scholars Program members, met on February 4, 2015, to work on the upcoming IPE Day to be held on March 5. Sub‐committees were formed to cover IPE Day responsibilities.

The CLARION Competition Committee, comprised of Interprofessional Scholars Program members, met on February 5, 2015 to discuss the possibilities of conducting the competition on the local level at UTMB for 2016. The competition focuses on an interprofessional team of four students that are given several weeks to conduct a root cause analysis surrounding a case‐based fictionalized sentinel event. At the end of the process, the teams present their findings and recommendations to a panel of judges representing leaders from different disciplines. The winning team advances to the National CLARION Cast competition held at the University of Minnesota, host of the event.

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center participates in this event and offers an elective course centered on the competition. Texas Tech members have invited our committee to visit in Lubbock to learn more about the event. Students are writing a proposal to seek support of the collaboration of the two institutes.

The Interprofessional Scholars Program Handbook is now complete and has been placed on the IPEP website. The handbook provides definitions, guidelines, rubrics, forms, and a checklist for the program.

InterprofessionalEducationandPracticeAdvisoryCommittee

The committee met Thursday, January 28 for a quarterly meeting. Details of IPE Day were shared with members.

Student ambassadors from the Interprofessional Scholars Program shared their perspectives on IPEP. Students shared that IPEP:

‐ Helped form positive relationships with students from other disciplines. ‐ Created better understanding and appreciation of each other’s roles

Dr. Pamela Watson shared the objectives and tactics of 20/20 Academic Enterprise. A task force will be formed with members of the committee to make recommendations for creating a dedicated IPEP Office with staff.

IPEP CollaborateswithProfessionalismCommittee

IPEP continues to work with the Professionalism Committee to present Brown Bag Lunches with an interprofessional forum to discuss “respect” at UTMB. The staff luncheon will be held on February 24. Reservations for the event are full.

The second student lunch is being planned for April. Dr. Joan Nichols, a member of the Interprofessional Education and Practice Advisory Committee, will present a case study that will help those attending understand each other’s roles as it pertains to an interprofessional team. Students in the Interprofessional Scholars Program will be creating posters and a hand‐out that helps define roles and responsibilities.
