20 Bed Acute Inpatient Mental Health Unit consisting of 15 adult acute beds; 5 aged acute inpatient beds; Community Psychiatric Team, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (community) and Aged Psychiatry Community Team.

GRADUATE PROGRAM Brief description

AIMS:

• To provide a supportive environment in which graduate nurses begin nursing practice in mental health.

• To encourage the development of critical thinking and reflective practice through the process of clinical supervision

• To assist Graduate Nurses to work towards achieving the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce as a beginning level practitioner

ACADEMIC COMPONENT

• To facilitate the process of graduate nurses commencing tertiary studies in Mental Health, thereby preparing them for advancement in the mental health field.

• This requires successful applicants to enrol with an affiliated university in postgraduate mental health studies and undertake the NEVIL program (equates to 3 subject credits). • The NEVIL program consists of 3 study blocks (each of 1 week’s duration) over the year. Content is delivered by the clinical educators of the NEVIL cluster (a consortium consisting of several major rural and metropolitan mental health services within Victoria)

• Attendance and successful completion of the NEVIL program is mandatory. Postgraduates receive full pay whilst attending the NEVIL program.

Duration 12 months

Rotations

There are 2- 3 rotations, consisting of Acute Inpatient – Kerferd (mandatory), Community Mental Health, and the offer of an elective.

Rotations are available, by negotiation.

Further / Postgrad study The graduate will be required to enrol in a Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing at an affiliated university and to be working towards the completion of these studies.

Description of Service

The Alfred enjoys national acclaim as a progressive hospital at the forefront of developments in multidisciplinary acute care, including excellence in nursing practice and research, medical research and health care education. Alfred Psychiatry is

recognised as a major acute metropolitan psychiatric service, nurses play a critical role in the delivery and coordination of care for people with a mental illness. Alfred Psychiatry comprises adult inpatient units (consisting of 60 beds in two acute inpatient units as well as a full range of community based services, rehabilitation, consultation liaison as well as a child, adolescent and young adult community based service). Alfred nurses play an integral role as team based nurses and community case managers, in maintaining a high quality service. We value our nursing staff and seek out graduate nurses who wish to commit to Alfred Psychiatry for a rewarding and supported career. Our service is responsive to meet the changing needs of Alfred Health consumers and we have many innovative programs established. GRADUATE PROGRAM Brief description

During 2014, the Alfred Graduate Psychiatric Nurse Program will be entering the 20th year. We aim to provide a supportive environment for first year Registered Nurses enabling the development of knowledge and skills in the field of mental health nursing. Support includes: more supernumerary time than any other graduate program, a clinical educator dedicated to the graduate program, group and individual Clinical Supervision, two preceptors per graduate who have been educated to meet the demands of this role, and a structured graduate year program. You will be able to negotiate when you take your leave.

Duration 12 month Graduate Nurse Program, ongoing contract offered on successful completion of the Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program.

Rotations A rotation to our Community Rehabilitation Care Unit and a voluntary option of rotation to Aged Psychiatry at Caulfield Hospital, Baringa unit.

Further / Postgraduate study

This program and its curriculum have been externally evaluated by the Academic Programs Committee of the University of Melbourne, La Trobe University and RMIT University. Successful completion of the Alfred Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program will provide up to four subjects (dependant on university chosen) advanced standing towards a Masters or Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing. On completion of the Graduate Nurse Program we encourage and support our graduates to participate in further professional development and/or postgraduate study.

8 positions (i.e. graduates will be offered ongoing employment as RN Grade 2 on successful completion of their graduate year). We currently provide the education program for graduates from Ramsay Health at the Albert Road Clinic and Belura Private Hospital. So please consider Albert Road Clinic or Belura Hospital as an additional option if you are interested in taking part in Alfred Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program.

Description of Service

Austin Health has the reputation of providing excellent learning opportunities in a wide range of medical, surgical, mental health and specialty areas of nursing. This large teaching hospital is close to public transport, local shopping centre and restaurants, and is an integral part of the local community. A 55-bed Mental Health Secure Extended Care Unit and Acute Inpatient facility was commissioned in December 2006 and a new Trauma Psychiatry Unit opened in early 2011. Austin also has the Statewide Eagle Child Unit, an Adolescent Unit and Mary Guthrie House for Acquired Brain Injury and mental illness. GRADUATE PROGRAM

Brief description

The Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program offers a supportive educational and clinical environment for program participants to integrate theory with practice.

Formal education in the Graduate nurse year program is credited towards postgraduate studies with Latrobe University, RMIT and The University of Melbourne, as well as Monash and University of SA. The program is run in collaboration with other north eastern metropolitan Mental Health services.

Duration 55 weeks

Rotations Two 6 month rotations including intercampus: Austin, Repatriation Hospital and Royal Talbot Campus. Further / Postgrad study Participants are able to earn credit towards University post graduate qualification.

Description of Hospital

Ballarat Health Services - Mental Health Services offers a comprehensive range of services within an integrated mental health care model in acute, recovery focused and community mental health assessment and treatment for all ages. It is part of a major teaching and research health organisation, which services western Victoria from Bacchus Marsh to the South Australian border. The service has a strong commitment to nursing education and provides a range of professional development programs in addition to the Graduate Nurse Program.

Bed Allocation: There are 87 inpatient beds across 3 Ballarat sites for Child and Adolescent, Adult, and Aged Persons. Number and Type of Beds

Specialist mental health care services are provided in inpatient and community settings across all age groups. Acute, recovery focused and extended care inpatient facilities are provided in the adult and aged persons areas.

GRADUATE YEAR PROGRAM Aim of Program

To provide training and supervision to the beginning practitioner on the development of evidence based, best practice, recovery focused biopsychosocial treatments in a family inclusive context. Graduate nurses will complete their clinical placements with the clinical competence, knowledge, skills, and attitude to routinely deliver effective treatments to clients and their families.

Rotations There will be four rotations through key service elements. Successful applicants are able to negotiate one community rotation according to their area of interest.

Description of Service

Barwon Health is the largest health service in rural Victoria providing an extensive range of acute, emergency, rehabilitation, palliative and extended care, psychiatric and community based programs to the people of Geelong and the Barwon South Western Region through The Geelong Hospital, Grace McKellar Centre and Community & Mental Health; approximately 830 beds and 3,300 staff over five campuses. Medicine and Surgery are affiliated with the University of Melbourne. A Professorial Chair in Contemporary Nursing Practice has been jointly established with Deakin University.

GRADUATE PROGRAM Brief description

The aim of the Mental Health Drugs and Alcohol Services Graduate Year Program is to provide learning opportunities that will enable the new graduate to consolidate clinical skills and orientate to the work place in a supportive environment. This is achieved through comprehensive orientation, extensive preceptor support and thirteen study days incorporating topics to enhance both clinical and professional development. Graduates will have the opportunity to rotate through community programs, inpatient programs, drug treatment services and the triage service.

The theoretical component is conducted in collaboration with Latrobe University Bendigo and contributes to a component of the Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science in Mental Health (this articulates into a Masters). Acceptance into the graduate program reserves a position within the course at LaTrobe.

Box Hill Hospital provides acute inpatient services for adult and adolescents. In addition there are drug withdrawal and rehabilitation in patient units.

Maroondah Hospital has one of the largest mental health facilities’ in the state, which includes acute and residential adult inpatient units.

The Peter James Centre provides care for the geriatric mental health patient, with an aged care acute inpatient unit.

In addition to the opportunities offered in all our Graduate Programs the Mental Health Program offers:

3 weeks study leave across the 53 week program

Tertiary affiliation to undertake three post graduate units:

• Introduction to frameworks Supporting Mental Health Nursing Practice • Introduction to Psychopathology, assessment and intervention

• Communication and Counselling for Mental Health Nurses Successful completion of these units and the GNP educational program provides participants with up to 50% credit towards a Graduate Diploma in Mental Health. The focus of the Mental Health graduate program is to have well educated, reflective nurses who are able to critically analysis, and enhance best practice. A key part of this is through clinical supervision where nurses reflect on their own practice and learn to take care of themselves. Support is offered with preceptorship, Nurse Educators in all inpatient units, Graduate nurse co-ordinator, Line supervision and Eastern Health’s employee assistance program.

Box Hill Hospital provides comprehensive services across a diverse range of medical and surgical specialties. The hospital cares for high acuity patients, admitted through the emergency department and supported by Critical Care, Oncology/Haematology, Renal, Neurology and Midwifery /Paediatric services. Mental Health and drug and alcohol services and programs are comprehensive and delivered to all age groups across Eastern Health. Located at Box Hill are acute adult, adolescent, drug withdrawal and rehabilitation units.

Maroondah Hospital has grown from a community based hospital to a large acute care facility. The Hospital provides a broad range of medical /surgical specialties and critical care services. It has one of the busiest emergency departments in metro Melbourne.

Mental Health facilities’ include acute and residential adult inpatient units. The Peter James Centre is predominantly recognized as the rehabilitation centre across the region. Mental Health services are also provided from this site, with an aged care acute inpatient unit.

GRADUATE PROGRAM Brief description

The Graduate Nurse Program assists the graduate nurse in transition from student nurse to registered nurse. It aims to enhance the clinical and professional confidence and competence of the graduate in a supportive environment, which fosters continuing learning, professional responsibilities and independence. Graduates will work rostered shifts, including nights. Placement during the program will be split between units at Thomas Embling Hospital, with an extended period spent in an acute area. All graduates must be registered with the AHPRA prior to commencement of the course.

To facilitate the development of graduates as competent, knowledgeable and responsible psychiatric nurses, all students will be enrolled into the first year of a Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing. Study leave will be provided to meet academic requirements.

A modern, progressive, multi campus facility providing a wide range of acute and specialist medical, surgical and maternity services. Psychiatric services comprise acute and sub-acute inpatient, aged residential and community mental health services for the Goulburn Valley Region of Victoria. Goulburn Valley Health offers an exciting opportunity for a graduate nurse to make the transition from beginner to competent practitioner in a well supported environment in the specialised field of mental health nursing. All graduate nurses are provided with regular clinical Supervision, an allocated preceptor, and are supported by the professional development unit.

Peninsula Health operates 20 public health facilities across 14 sites. GRADUATE PROGRAM Brief description

Peninsula Mental Health Service provides a supportive environment to assist the graduate to make a smooth transition from beginner to competent clinician. The program uses the Standards of Practice for Australian Mental Health Nurses 2010 as a framework and incorporates the Mental Health Professional Online Development package. The clinical rotations are run over 12 months with an additional six month placement to obtain a Graduate Diploma in Mental Health nursing on successful completion of the theoretical components. The aim of the program is to provide a supportive environment which will include rotations in Adult Acute Inpatient, Aged Acute Inpatient and Community Care Units (Recovery) and an elective rotation. Ongoing support is provided through a 2 week orientation program, clinical supervision, preceptorship, monthly study days, clinical educators and the peer support program. Recovery Orientated Practice is embedded throughout the program and graduate nurses are provided with monthly group supervision in order to develop reflective practice and enhance personal wellbeing and consumer outcomes.

Duration 12 months Graduate Nurse Program plus a 6 month placement whilst completing post-graduate study.

The RCH has paediatric and adolescent beds in diverse areas such as: medical, surgical, emergency, medical and surgical short stay, adolescent and rehabilitation care, adolescent mental health, orthopaedics, cardiology, oncology and haematology, neurosciences, neonates, operating theatres, intensive care and post acute care

GRADUATE YEAR PROGRAM: Aim of Program

The Graduate Mental Health Nurse Program builds upon undergraduate learning and facilitates transition into clinical practice by providing professional clinical support and education to graduates entering mental health nursing. Graduates are supported by qualified preceptors and undertake standards based clinical development and a theoretical program comprising 18 study days organised as three units of study, incorporating both theory and clinical support and assessment. The program is conducted in collaboration with the North Western Mental Health (NWMH) program. The program articulates with postgraduate study and study credit arrangements are in place for subject credit points towards the Postgraduate Diploma of Nursing Practice (Mental Health) at the Department of Nursing, University of Melbourne (subject to university approval)

GRADUATE YEAR PROGRAM Aim of Program

To provide a comprehensive educational and clinical package for beginning Mental Health Nurses. The program is underpinned by a strong theoretical framework, and an evidence-based treatment model of integrated mental health care. In this model the consumer, family, carers and General Practitioner are central to the development, implementation and evaluation of treatment strategies. MH Nurse Graduates are regarded as an integral part of the treating team. They will gain experience in a supportive and nurturing environment where all staff work collaboratively to assist the MH Graduate reach their fullest potential.

MH Graduates will be provided with education, training and experience in order to effectively assist consumers to manage their mental health, and begin to understand MH Nursing practice in the acute inpatient setting.

Study days, generous supernumerary time, clinical supervision, core competency training and Preceptorship support are included in the program.

St. Vincent’s Mental Health provides a supportive environment to assist the graduate to make a smooth transition from beginner to competent practitioner. We have created a graduate program to address the needs of novice practitioners in mental health. A 52-week graduate program in mental health nursing is offered in which major clinical placements are provided in the adult acute in-patient service, Community Care Unit (CCU) and Aged. During the graduate year, candidates will complete 3 study blocks with assignments, case studies and competencies. Upon successful completion of the graduate year, the graduate is eligible to apply for credit points towards a Postgraduate Diploma and endorsement as a mental health nurse.
