1、Chinese History and Culture
China is the world’s oldest continuous major civilization, with written records dating back about 3.500 year and with 5.000 years of civilization. The development of a state ideology based on Confucianism (100BC) and a common system of writing (200BC) both strengthened Chinese civilization. Politically, China alternated between periods of political union and disunion, and between periods of political union and disunion, and was often conquered by external ethnicities, of which many were eventually assimilated into the Chinese identity. These cultural and political influences are decisive to Chinese identity. These cultural and political influences from many parts of Asia as well as successive waves of immigration and emigration merged to create the familiar image of Chinese culture and people today.

China is one of the oldest places in the world where urban civilization was born, and Chinese civilization has a profound influence over the East Asian region for a very long span of years. Being the fundamental knowledge and a basic research, the study of the construction and development of Chinese towns & villages will help the international students to lay a solid foundation for their understanding of the East Asian civilization. Many historical records tell us the stories of foreign students studying in China more than a thousand years ago. Therefore, this course will start from the mechanism in the sprout of urban civilization worldwide, the ancient philosophy of China, the principle of town & village construction, the basic urban patterns in the old Chinese Empire, describe the general urban phenomenon and the inherent cultural system in China and the main East Asian countries. At the same time, this course will analyze the town & village development in Yangtze River Delta in general, and Shanghai the city in particular. Together with the introduction of the cultural heritage protection, the planning of 2010 Expo and the present urban reform, this course will build a platform containing both professional and elementary knowledge in the history of Chinese town & village, in the urban planning of Shanghai for all the international students in different spheres.

5. Intercultural Communication
With economic globalization, the economic border between countries blurs. This has triggered frequent business mobility across the world and ever-increasing interactions among peoples of different cultures. This has given rise to the need of learning how to communicate effectively in a cross-cultural setting. This course aims to familiarize students with the essential terms and basic theories in intercultural communication, and give a detailed analysis of the value system of Chinese culture, which is key to understanding the social and economical conditions as well as foreign policies of modern China. Case study will be employed to illustrate failures in Sino-foreign communication.
