Getting Feedback Helps Us Serve You Better

Every day at Travis Credit Union we live our mission of helping members improve their financial lives. This culture of service relies on our employees actively engaging you in conversations at our branches, on the phone and through electronic and other communication. It’s not that we’re nosey; rather, we thrive by learning more about you and your unique financial situation.

These conversations give us opportunities to better match services and products that fit your needs. We believe that if you’re happy and satisfied with us, you will continue to share the benefits of credit union membership with others, too.

We share in your

success

When our employees find ways to save members money or improve their financial situations, they often share it with co-workers. We celebrate these success stories as an organization to acknowledge these individuals and to inspire other employees to take the initiative and do the same. For example, a couple recently saved almost $1,000 a month in mortgage payments when a Travis employee finally persuaded them to refinance their home loan. On the same day they

signed their loan documents, the husband was offered a permanent position at his job. He called the timing a blessing because they are now able to save money again with confidence. In another example, a

member walked into a branch looking to consolidate her high-interest rate credit cards. After explaining her situation, an employee reviewed the member’s account and discovered a way to consolidate her debt into a single loan, thereby reducing her monthly expenses by $400. The employee said the person was shocked that we could save her that much money. If there’s a way to save our members money, we’ll do our best to find it!

Annual meeting

Our annual membership meeting provides you with another way to communicate with us. This meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in our TCU Community Room in Vacaville. We’ll discuss last year’s achievements and outline the credit union’s goals for 2013.

We’re also holding a community meeting in Atwater on May 23. See this issue for more information. Patricia and I invite you to attend the meeting that is most convenient for you.

Referrals may earn

you $50

Another way we measure our success is by the response you give to our promotions. Our reputation as the best place to bank in Solano County has been built by service and by word-of-mouth referrals. In this issue, read how you can earn up to $50 in cash by referring a new member to us who then gets consumer loans during the promotional period. When the new member you refer funds their loan, they can receive up to $50, too. You may have noticed our social media efforts over the past few months, especially on facebook. We’re working hard to engage you in social media to better serve you. Rest assured we are reading your posts and comments, and responding to them. Finally, you can provide direct input to us by responding to our annual survey. We recently mailed random members this questionnaire, which allows you to rank us in various areas. The survey results are then tallied so we can gauge our strengths and areas where we can do better. If you’ve received a survey, we encourage you to answer honestly and return the form to us.

Patricia and I hope to see you at one of our meetings soon. Have a great spring!

There’s a Story Behind

Every Home Loan We Do

Just ask Melanie and Zarah

At our branches throughout Northern California and at our Home Loan Center in Vacaville, you’ll find professional and friendly Travis Credit Union employees eager to help you get the home loan your need, including Zarah Gutierrez and Melanie Miller. That’s because our employees know there’s a story behind every home loan application and that a member is always more than just an account number.

“It was a blessing in disguise”

Melanie, a Senior Member Service Representative who works at our Gateway Branch, had spoken to a couple about the benefits of refinancing their home on several occasions. She was finally able to get them to apply last July, when they were looking for ways to save money. Melanie was able to reduce their mortgage payment by almost $1,000 a month. Plus, on the day they signed the

loan docs, the husband was offered a full-time, permanent position, allowing the family to save with confidence. They called the entire situation “a blessing in disguise.”

“She thought it was too good

to be true.”

That’s the response Zarah, a Senior Mortgage Loan Consultant at our Home Loan Center, received when she showed a homeowner how Travis could refinance her mortgage with no upfront costs. The woman was skeptical at first and kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, but there wasn’t any bad news. Zarah was able to refinance the woman’s home loan to a 15-year fixed-rate, reducing her mortgage payment by $461 a month. “She couldn’t believe what she was hearing,” Zarah said. “She thought it was too good to be true.’’

Zarah, Melanie and the rest of our team are eager to help you buy or refinance a home. Take advantage of today’s historically low rates to buy a new home or lower your monthly payments. We listen to your needs, tell you what’s needed upfront and work with you through every step of the loan approval process. We know there’s a story behind every home loan we do. What’s yours?

Take the Sting Out of Studies

with a Student Loan

If you’re sending yourself or a loved one off to college this fall and are looking for ways to help pay for that education, consider a private student loan. We’ve partnered with the cuScholar Private Student Loan Program to allow TCU members access to loans that have some of the lowest interest rates available.

Students may borrow from $2,000 up to the cost of attendance per year, with a maximum of $120,000 in total undergraduate loans or $160,000 in total graduate loans per student. The funds can be used for any qualified educational expense. The program has no origination fee and you can cancel the loan within 30 days without paying any fees or interest.

To qualify, you must be enrolled in an eligible post-secondary school and pursuing a degree program. You must be a member of Travis Credit Union at the time you apply. Also, the borrower and any co-signers must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

There’s a related program for recent college graduates that allows you to consolidate all of your student loans. You may refinance from $7,500 to $125,000 in undergraduate private student loan debt.

Call (888) 549-9050 to learn more about these programs. You can also click on the cuScholar Private Student Loans banner at www.traviscu.org.

Look for our scholarship winners

Thank you to every TCU member who submitted an application for one of our $1,500 scholarships. We’ll announce the winners of our Mary Keith Duff Memorial Scholarship in the Summer issue of

Smart Money Matters in July.

All scholarship winners will be notified by June 1. Good luck to all you high school seniors!

In the community

8 www.traviscu.org Travis Credit Union employees actively support the people and communities we serve through an investment of financial resources and human capital. We’re also engaged in the credit union industry, promoting the mission of “People Helping People.

Here are some of the events our employees participated in over the past few months:

Free Shredding Event

Protecting yourself from identity theft is important. On March 9, Travis held a shredding event at its corporate headquarters in Vacaville to allow community residents to safely discard their unwanted personal and financial documents. A free e-waste collection site was also available.

VITA Tax Return Workshops

Travis Credit Union hosted six free tax return service sessions in February and March for qualified residents in the community. The sessions were very popular and well attended. We partnered with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to provide this free tax return service.

Military Saves Week

Travis Credit Union employees and our T-Bird mascot participated in a Military Saves Week event on Feb. 25 at our Travis AFB Branch. Military Saves Week is a national campaign to encourage military families to save money every month and to encourage automatic savings.

Benicia Chamber Installation Dinner

TCU managers and employees are active in the communities we serve, including with the chambers of commerce in the various counties where we have branches. Here are a few TCU employees at the Benicia Chamber Installation Dinner in January.

Solano EDC Annual Meeting

TCU board directors and managers attended the annual meeting of the Solano Economic Development Council on Jan. 31. The credit union is a strong supporter of economic development in Solano County and its seven cities, and helped sponsor the event. Patsy Van Ouwerkerk serves as Board Chair for the organization.

10 www.traviscu.org Did you know there’s a quicker and easier

way to buy a new car at a dealership? With the Credit Union Direct Lending (CUDL) program, you can obtain credit union financing while at a participating CUDL dealership. That means no trips to your branch. Enjoy on-the-spot loan financing so you can start enjoying your new car sooner.

Started in 1994, the CUDL program provides a fast and easy way to get credit union financing at local dealerships. Today, the program covers most states and represents more than 20 million credit union members, 9,500 dealerships and 650 credit unions.

It’s easy to take advantage of this program. Look for dealerships that display the CUDL logo or simply ask

for credit union financing. There’s no pre-approval needed from Travis Credit Union – just start shopping.

Once you’ve selected your new car and negotiated a fair price, the CUDL approval process occurs right at the dealership. You’ll enjoy the same rate and terms you’d find at a branch. Once you sign the loan papers at the dealership, that’s it. You’re done. You don’t have to visit your credit union to complete this loan because everything is conveniently taken care of at the dealership.

If you’re not yet a credit union member, you may be eligible for membership and can sign up on-the-spot. Also, the CUDL program has trained dealership representatives who are familiar with credit union financing policies and

procedures and can streamline the loan process. To locate your nearest CUDL AutoSMART representative, visit www.cudlautosmart.com and click on the “locate” tab.

This Web site is also a great place to research for your new car if you’re not yet ready to buy. You can find information and resources on new and used vehicles, on selling your old car and on the CUDL program.

With Travis Credit Union’s competitive low rates and on-the-spot dealership financing through CUDL, you can make your next car buying experience quicker and easier. If you have any questions about our auto loans or pre-approvals, call (800) 877-8328.

Your Travis Credit Union share deposit accounts are federally insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). This insurance is similar to the insurance on deposit accounts at banks provided by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

The NCUA administers the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), which was created in 1970 to insure members’ deposits. The share insurance level was permanently set at $250,000 per account in 2010. The NCUSIF is backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.

This fund was created by and continues to be paid for entirely by credit unions. No federal tax dollars have ever been placed in the fund, and no member has ever lost money insured by the NCUSIF. Visit the NCUA Web site http://ncua.gov

for more information.

This surcharge would help merchants pass along the credit card payment processing costs to consumers. But California has laws that limit merchant surcharging, which means you should not be charged a surcharge if you’re paying with your credit card. According to VISA, this change in merchant surcharging took effect on Jan. 27, 2013. However, if you are traveling out-of-state for vacation or business, merchants could add a surcharge.

Facts about Merchant Surcharges:

nRetailers may apply a surcharge only for credit card purchases, and not for purchases made using a debit or prepaid card.

nRetailers must notify customers about the credit card surcharge before customers make a purchase. There must be signs at the store entrance and at the point of sale.

nRetailers must show the surcharge fees on every receipt, no matter if it is an in-store or online transaction.

nThere are limits to the amount merchants can surcharge, which is not more than 3% of the purchase amount.

nRetailers may offer a discount for cash and check purchases to encourage people to use other forms of payment.
