SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON AT A GLANCE

Lesson 13, November 29, 2020 —

IMPARTIAL LOVE —

JAMES 2

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?.

James 2:5 (NIV)

WHY THIS LESSON MATTERS

Favoring one person or group over others is a common occurrence in human relationships. Why is it unacceptable to show partiality to certain people or groups? James reminds us that love requires us to treat everyone equally.

THE LESSON IN CONTEXT

The author of the book of James has been identified as the half-brother of our Lord, Jesus Christ. He became pastor of the Jerusalem church and used this pivotal position to boldly address the worldliness that was infiltrating the church throughout the Mediterranean world. A lack of spiritual maturity had caused many to profess Christ, but to live immoral and unrighteous lives. They were also facing severe persecution because of their profession of faith. James’s primary purpose was to emphasize that genuine faith is practically active, produces righteous fruit, endures trials, understands the nature of temptations, refuses to practice partiality and favoritism, controls the tongue, exemplifies godly wisdom, and lives holy and separated from the world. He touches on each of these areas in his letter and gives general instructions for addressing them as Christians in everyday living.

STEPHEN MINISTERS: The

After People

People often ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?” One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the

After People.

Stephen Ministers are there:

...after the phone call you hoped you’d never get.

...after the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you. ...after the relationship falls apart and the bottom falls out of your life.

...after the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.”

...after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says, “Welcome to your new home.”

...after the last child honks the horn, waves and drives away—and the house suddenly seems empty. ...after the gavel comes down, the handcuffs go on, and your loved one is led away.

...after the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible. ...after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck.

...after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out.

Stephen Ministers are the After People. They are ready to come alongside you—or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives—and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed.

To reach one of us, call 313-341-2302, and leave a message that you want to speak to a Stephen Minister.

FIRST CANDLE

THE CANDLE OF HOPE

(PURPLE CANDLE)

The Patriachs, Abraham, the Old Testament

Ancestors of Jesus

Leader: May your hearts be filled with hope as you hear the promises God made to bless all the

peoples on earth through Abraham, the father of our faith.

All: Thanks be to God

Today is the First Sunday of Advent, we will light a candle to remember the patriarchs, Abraham,

Isaac and Jacob, the ancestors of our faith.

Genesis Chapter 12:1

-

2

Now the Lord said to Abram,

Go from your country and your kindred and your father

s house to

the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your

name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses

you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. (NRSV)

Blessed are you, sovereign Lord, God of our ancestors: to you be praise and glory for ever. You

called the patriarchs to live by the light of faith and to journey in the hope of your promised

fulfilment. May we be obedient to your call and be ready and watchful to receive your Christ, a

lamp to our feet and a light to our path; for you are our light and our salvation. Blessed be God for

ever.

Leader: Let us pray:

Lord Jesus we give thanks for our Father Abraham who by faith obeyed your call and

became the father of many nations. Give us faith to listen to your voice that our hearts may be

filled with the hope of our Lord Jesus. Amen.
