Summary

Dean, W.R.J. & Milton, S.J. 2007. Avifaunal specimens from Northern Mozambique in museum collections Durban Museum Novitates 32: 1-37. Collection details and taxonomy are given for 3573 specimens of 421 species of birds collected in northern Mozambique. The taxonomy has been updated to include species splits and synonymies, and the most recent opinions on mono typic and polytypic species. KEYWORDS: birds, collections, Mozambique, museum, specimens, subspecies.

Introduction

Northern Mozambique, here defined as that part of Mozambique north of 18° S, is both poorly known ornithologically and of interest to students of avian biogeography. The Zambezi River, the Rift Valley on the eastern edge of Malawi and the mountains and inselbergs along the western edge of northern Mozambique all provide potential biogeographic barriers, promoting speciation. Southern Malawi and the western parts of northern Mozambique share many species and subspecies, often (in the case of subspecies) differing from subspecies further south in Mozambique. It is of interest to present a list of specimens from northern Mozambique in museum collections. Details of some of these have already been published (Kirk (1864), Sclater (1864), Alexander (1899, 1900a, b, c), Roberts (1911), Kirby (1913), Vincent (1933-1936) and Brooke (1965,1969)) but it is useful to repeat these data here, particularly as there have been many recent changes in taxonomy. It is also opportune, in the light of the recent Birds o.f Malawi

(Dowsett-Lemaire & Dowsett 2006), to present these data to show similarities and differences between southern Malawi and northern Mozambique.

Northern Mozambique has been explored by naturalists and collectors since the early 1800s. Some of the early collectors are H. Salt, who collected some birds in 1809, W.C.H. Peters, who collected fishes and lizards, and some birds in northern

Mozambique from 1843 to 1848 (Bauer et al. 1995), the

Livingstone expeditions along the Zambezi river in 1862-1863 (Kirk 1864), J. Dickinson, who collected mainly raptors in 1861 (Sclater 1864), J. Mellor in 1863 (specimens in the BMNH collection), H.S.H. Cavendish and F. Stuhlmann, active in the late 1880s (specimens in the BMNH and 2MB collections, respectively), Boyd Alexander, who collected birds along the Zambezi river in 1898 (Alexander 1899-1900), 'Arthur Loveridge in 1905 and 1918 (Loveridge 1922), C.H.E. Grant in 1907 (Sclater 1911a, b, c), F. Vaughan-Kirby and A Roberts in 1908 (Roberts 1911, 1912; Vaughan-Kirby 1913), P.A. Sheppard in the early 1900s (specimens in the TM collection), H.C. Muller in 1925 (Brooke 1969), H.B. Cott in 1927 (specimens in Cambridge collection), D.W.K. MacPherson in 1928-1929 (Brooke 1965) and J. Vincent, who collected for the BMNH in 1931 and 1932 (Vincent 1933-1936). More recent collectors include (in chronological order, earlier to later), C.W. Benson, J. Makawa, the Carp-Transvaal Museum expedition, D.W. Lamm, A.S. Moore, e.G. Coetzee, M. Vincent, D. Dickinson, AC. Kemp and J.M. Mendelsohn. The specimens are widely scattered in museums in the world, with the bulk of the material in The (British) Natural History Museum, Tring, UK (Table 1).

Systematic list

Nomenclature and systematics follow Hockey et al. (2005) in

the main. For species extralimital to the area covered by that book, nomenclature follows The Birds of Africa series of

handbooks (Brown et al. 1982; Urban et al. 1986, 1997; Fry

et al. 1988, 2000; Keith et al. 1992; Fry & Keith 2004) and

Dickinson (2003).

Georeferencing oflocalities is within a 15° x 15° square following the system devised by Leistner & Morris (1976). Collection date given is to month only, with the number of specimens collected in that month included in the same parentheses.

4Not ascribed to subspecies.

Taxonomy: C. a. suahelica (Reichenow) occurs in southern

Malawi (Oowsett-Lemaire & Oowsett 2006) and is the form most likely to occur in northern Mozambique. C. a. constricta

Clancey is recognised by Fry et al. (1988) and Dickinson (2003), but both of these authorities place C. a. vibrator

Clancey in synonymy with C. a. suahelica. White (1965) does

not recognise either of these subspecies, but constricta may

have been described post-publication of his checklist. White (1965) suggests that only nominate C. abingoni (south of the

Save R.) and C. a. suahelica (from the Save R. north) occur

in Mozambique. Until there has been a critical review of C.

abingoni subspecies and their distributions in Mozambique,

the conservative approach of White (1965) should be followed. Green-backed Woodpecker Campethera cailliautii

(Malherbe)

3Not ascribed to subspecies.

Taxonomy: C. c. loveridgei occurs in adjacent southern Malawi

(Oowsett-Lemaire & Oowsett 2006) and most likely in northern Mozambique. C. c. fuelleborni is recognised by White (1965)

(with no mention of loveridgei), but not recognised by Fry et

al. (1988). It is placed in synonymy with C. c. loveridgei by

Dickinson (2003).

Family Coliidae

Speckled Mousebird Colius striatus Gmelin

Collection localities: 40 km north-east of Furancungo [1433DAr, (Mar, 2); Braganca (5 km south ofTete) [1434ADf, (Oct, 2); Bandar [1634CA]3, (Aug, 2); Nicuadala [1736DB]5, (Jun); Mixixine [1737CA]5, (April); Quelimane [1836BB]I, (Mar); Quelimane [1836BB]4, (Jan).

Specimens: BMNH (4), SMNS (1), TM (2), USNM (2),

2MB (I).

Notes: ILabelled C. s. affinis Shelley.

2Labelled C. s. congicus Reichenow.

3Labelled C. s. minor Cabanis.

4Labelled C. s. integralis Clancey.

5Not ascribed to subspecies.

Taxonomy: C. s. integralis occurs in southern Malawi (Dowsett-Lemaire & Dowsett 2006) and is probably the only subspecies in northern Mozambique north of the Zambezi River. White (1965) and Dickinson (2003), however, consider C. s. affinis

to be the form in northern Mozambique. It seems likely that the ranges of affinis and integralis overlap along the lower

Zambezi River. The available material needs careful examination to resolve this situation. Neither C. s. congicus

(mainly in Angola, DRC, Zambia and Tanzania) nor C. s.

minor (mainly South Africa) are likely to occur in northern

Mozambique.

Red-faced Mousebird Urocolius indicus (Latham)

Collection localities: Lurio [1340CB]I, (Jun, 5; Jul); Mossuril [1440DC]I, (May, 2); Mossuril [1440DCP, (Aug); Chico a, 22 km east-south-east [1532CBf, (Aug, 2); Lumbo [1540BA]I, (Jul); Tete [1633BA]2, (May) [type locality of U. indicus mossambicus (Reichenow, 1896)]; Messenguza [1836CA]3,

(Jul).

Specimens: BMNH (8), FMNH (1), Liverpool (1), TM (1), USNM (2), 2MB (1, the type of U. indicus mossambicus,

Mus. no. 2MB 60.2, collected 14 May (no year) by W.C.H. Peters).

Notes: ILabelled U. i. pallidus (Reichenow).

2Labelled U. i. mossambicus Reichenow.

3Not ascribed to subspecies.

Taxonomy: U. i. pallidus occurs in southern Malawi

(Dowsett-Lemaire &, Dowsett 2006) and is perhaps the only subspecies in northern Mozambique north of the Zambezi River. The occurrence of U. i. mossambicus is not unlikely.

Family Cuculidae
