WREB is Going GREEN!

WREB is implementing a new program, Board Effect, in late 2013 and early 2014 that will help to reduce use of paper as well as save staff time and increase efficiency and timeliness of communication for Board and Committee members. This will be rolled out to all the Board of Directors in January and other committees in 2014. Training for staff begins in November followed by the Board in January. Our plan is to hold our first paperless Board meeting in January, 2014. In addition to the benefits mentioned above, Board Effect is a useful tool for scheduling. It also allows us to survey and poll efficiently and store relevant materials in a centrally accessible location for Board and Committee members.

We are also in the process of implementing software, Expense Wire, to allow examiners to process their expense vouchers online. Training will take place throughout the fall and early winter. In 2014 all examiners will be able to submit vouchers electronically and have checks directly deposited. This will reduce paperwork and shorten turnaround time to receive payment .

Rollout has begun, so watch your email for details. We are introducing Expense Wire to small groups of examiners from now through December. We will go live in early 2014. We appreciate your timely response to training and testing emails. This helps us give each examiner any individual coaching they need prior to the busy exam season, when voucher volume is quite high.

Watch for further details and training information!!

Travel Tips from Debbie Wantland

Weather Delays

Sometimes the airlines are delayed by either weather or mechanical issues. If you are holding a ticket and are at the airport, here are the steps you need to take.

1. If your flight has been delayed, wait in the designated area until updates are available.

2. If your flight is canceled, please get in line at the terminal counter. Once at the airport, only the airlines have the ability to reschedule your ticket, not the travel agent. Information on possible later flights are available on the airlines app on your smartphone or by calling the airlines 800 number. Please feel free to call the travel agent if the delay is during regular business hours. On every itinerary there is an emergency after hours contact number for Frosch Travel. Please give the agent your access code and reservation number that is found on the bottom of your itinerary. This number is for true emergencies only. If weather delayed or canceled your flight, you still need to follow the above rules.

Hotel Issues

If you have an issue checking into your hotel, or you find that the rate or amenities are not as contracted, please call Debbie at your earliest convenience. Most problems can be fixed easily.

Reservations and Hours of Operation

Please call Debbie to make your airline reservations as soon as you receive notice from WREB. The earlier you make your plans, the better the availability and prices.

Debbie is available Monday-Friday from 8am to 5pm Arizona time. Please be patient if you cannot reach her. All calls are important and she will return your call or email as soon as possible.

Debbie is extremely busy working exclusively for WREB. Therefore, she does not offer any “personal” travel accommodations.

Tired of Long Security Lines?

Look into TSA Pre✓™ It is an expedited screening initiative that is expanding to airports across the country.

TSA is partnering with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as well as U.S. air carriers as part of this initiative. Passengers that are eligible for TSA Pre✓™ include U.S. citizens of frequent flier programs who have been invited by a participating airline. Additionally, U.S. citizens who are members of a CBP Trusted Traveler program, including Global Entry, SENTRI, and NEXUS and Canadian citizens who are members of NEXUS that are issued a Known Traveler Number qualify to participate. Passengers 12 and younger are allowed through TSA Pre✓™ lanes with eligible passengers.

TSA Pre✓™ is currently available for eligible passengers traveling on Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways and Virgin America. There are currently over 40 participating airports in the TSA Pre✓™ program.

Eligible participants use dedicated TSA Pre✓™ lanes at participating airports for screening benefits which could include no longer removing the following items:

• Shoes

• 3-1-1 compliant bag from carry-on • Laptop from bag

• Light outerwear/jacket • Belt

(4)

If TSA determines a passenger is eligible for expedited screening, information is embedded in the barcode of the passenger’s boarding pass. TSA scans the barcode at designated checkpoints and the passenger may be able to receive expedited screening.

Although there is a fee associated with the program, you may find it worthwhile due to the time savings by expedited security screenings. Typically there is no wait for these lines and it takes about 1 minute to go through security.

Congratulations Dr. Bruce Horn!

The Oklahoma Dental Association presents its 2013 Distinguished Dentist Service Award to Dr. Bruce Horn. This testimonial is given in recognition of his continued service and tireless commitment to the advancement of the science and art of dentistry in Oklahoma.

Congratulations Dr. Paul Stubbs!

Paul E. Stubbs, DDS, of Georgetown is this year's recipient of the Texas Dental Association (TDA) Gold Medal for Distinguished Service, the highest achievement within the Association. Dr. Stubbs is the 17th TDA member to be so honored by his peers, who gave him a standing ovation at the awards ceremony held during a meeting of the House of Delegates, the governing body of the TDA.

Dr. Stubbs, a general dentist, has held countless leadership positions throughout his career. He is the current president of the International College of Dentists (USA Section) and is the current chair of the TDA Building Committee. He previously served as president of the TDA, on the American Dental Association Council on Access, Prevention, and Interprofessional Relations, as a member of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, and as president of the Western Region Examining Board. In addition to practicing general dentistry full-time, he is active in the community. He is a member of the Westminister Presbyterian Church in Austin and has served on board of directors and treasurer for Extend-A-Care and on the advisory boards for the Assistance League of Austin and AIDS Services of Austin.

WREB Newsletter SPOTLIGHT ON: Jennifer Porter, RDH

WREB is pleased to feature one of our examiners "in the spotlight" in each Board newsletter. This issue “shines” on Jennifer Porter, RDH.

Jennifer has been examining with WREB for about 7 years. She served on the Process of Care Committee, first as a member and later as Committee Chair. The Dental Hygiene Process of Care exam is an interactive computer exam that simulates a dental hygienist rendering comprehensive treatment to a patient in a practice setting. Currently, Jennifer examines for the clinical Hygiene exam, and serves as an Anesthesia Chief Examiner.

Her career started out in dentistry with a Dental Assisting program, where she obtained her CDA certification. Interestingly, Jennifer played college volleyball for the next couple of years. It was during undergrad days when she met and married her husband, Cody, just before beginning Dental Hygiene school. They are the proud parents of another up and coming ball player - their daughter, Jorden (yes, they “do” look alike, don’t they! Jorden is on the left).

Following graduation from Dental Hygiene school in Gresham, Oregon at Mt Hood, Jennifer took a job in Bozeman Mt in search of a good place to raise their daughter.

She joined the Board of Trustees for the Montana Dental Hygienists' Association as the newsletter editor. This ultimately led to President - elect, then President, Annual Session Chair, Alternate Delegate, Delegate, and Board of Dentistry liaison. She was appointed to the Montana Board of Dentistry and is completing her second term, as of March, 2014.

For fun, “Coach Porter” plays, coaches and serves as Director for Big Sky Volleyball Club. She has been the Director and lead coach of this nonprofit volleyball club serving children from 9-18 years old for the past 2 1/2 years. Prior to this, she coached high school volleyball for 5 years. All this, and she still works 4 days a week in private practice.

The Porters’ daughter, Jorden, is now following in her mother’s footsteps playing college volleyball at Rocky Mountain College and studying Premed. She proudly acknowledges that Jorden “just might be” an even better volleyball player than she was.

Jennifer’s (in her words) “wonderful” husband of almost 20 years spends his time working as a detention officer for the county Sheriff's office and hunts and fishes whenever he can. They both enjoy gardening together, and even though they live in Montana with a extremely short growing season, they admit to having had a stellar crop.

Asked about “the most rewarding aspect of examining for WREB”, she said, “I am able to keep up on my clinical skills through calibration exercises, and get to meet, network and

befriend the most amazing people that work with WREB”. Jennifer’s slogan or mantra is to “always treat patients how they would want to be treated – and to never compromise her ethics”.

WREB Welcomes Newest Team Member

Ashley Sinclair, Administrative Office Coordinator, started with WREB on May 20th, 2013. Ashley previously managed a fine art gallery in Old Town Scottsdale, which specialized in professional and career building services for established and upcoming artists from all over the world. In addition, she was a partner and CFO for a small organic food company. Ashley earned a BS in Business degree in early 2013 and plans to graduate with a Masters in Accountancy in mid-2014.

Originally from Nashville, TN, Ashley attended high school in Arizona, returning to the South shortly after graduation. As an adult, she eventually returned to the state she had grown fond of many years

before and has resided in Phoenix for almost four years. She and her fiancé enjoy camping and taking pictures in Arizona’s many ghost towns while spending time with their rescue pup, Zappa. Professional Background Information Services (PBIS)

Professional Background Information

Services (PBIS) was established in 1998 to provide a valued service to both state dental boards and dental licensure applicants. State boards typically undertake the cumbersome

responsibility of documenting, verifying and processing all information necessary prior to an applicant being issued a license to practice dentistry. Considerable time and costs are involved on behalf of the boards to evaluate each individual’s application, often taking up to several months. PBIS affords state boards an alternative by providing professional dental and dental hygiene credentialing packets. Contracted state boards confidently refer their licensure applicants to PBIS, and within six to eight weeks receive an Information Summary, and an Omission and Discrepancy Report. The report contains organized original certified primary source documents, i.e. transcripts, clinical exam scores, National Board scores, license verifications, and a ten year history of malpractice, as well as a criminal and federal background check for all counties where the applicant has lived or worked for the previous seven years. The majority of the information gathered relates to the applicant’s dental education and clinical practice. Boards appreciate the succinct packet that allows them to focus on expediting the actual licensure process.

Applicants pay the PBIS fee, so there is no additional expense to the dental boards. The time they used to spend in filing and tracking application documents is now spent more efficiently. For the applicant, PBIS provides immediate response time to answer their questions from the time they start an application until the time the final packet is mailed to the board. Applicants often comment how easy it is to reach PBIS and how nice it is to have responsive personnel for their concerns or questions. Because PBIS orders all the needed verifications and reports, the applicant does not have to worry about contacting the numerous agencies to locate their records. An online application process was launched in September 2011 that has even further streamlined the process and improved the overall processing time.

Administrated by manager, Margo Enfield, since 2005, PBIS is now contracted with the dental boards of Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Guam, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Virgin Islands and Wyoming. In 2012, PBIS efficiently processed 867 applications. They look forward to future expansion since the business continues to grow based on professional reputation.
