NOT SO HOT

I have spent my entire life, up to this point, in states where hot weather, really hot weather was a rarity. My personal definition for hot weather was anything above 80 degrees. I use the word, “was,” because I have quickly come to realize that 80 degrees is not so hot. As of the writing of this article I have already experienced more 90 degree days in the first three months of my time in North Carolina than I have probably experienced over the past 5 years in Michigan. It is a logical conclusion that as one moves further south, average temperatures rise. So, 80 degrees is not so hot.

Not so hot, is also the way I have always tried to think about myself. This has been especially important in my life as a husband, father and pastor. In Romans 12, the Apostle Paul reminds us, “For by the grace given me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think…” If I have an over-inflated opinion of who I am and what I have been blessed to do, then I am trying to steal the spotlight from God. That is not the place I want to be. That should not be the desire of any of God’s children. Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matt 5). What if we consistently act in ways that glorify ourselves and serve our sinful desires and deny God’s grace? There is the danger of heat like no one has ever known. We have been so blessed to know that because of God’s love and the death and

(3)

resurrection of Jesus, we have no fear of being eternally separated from heaven’s eternal bliss. We have been gifted by God to love and serve our neighbors so that God alone would receive the glory. If you are feeling not so hot, thank the Lord for the gift of humility that allows you to serve and to step out of the spotlight so that others can see the Lord at work. In service to our Savior,

A Note from the Church Office

We continue to use our website as a hub for communication in these unusual times.

If you have not shared an email address with the church office, please do so by emailing sharman@concordinc.org. We are utilizing our email blast service Mail Chimp and a Highlights email list, maintained in the office, to send out notifications. Notifications will include Worship Schedules, COVID-19 updates as they apply to our activities and other necessary updates.

If you know of any members who are not connected electronically, please share that information with the church office and we will add them to our mailing list. We typically mail the highlights and worship in the home materials to our homebound but we are finding out that others who are not connected electronically miss us too.

To subscribe to announcements from the church, go to our website

at http://concordianc.org/home.php Near the bottom of the page, you will see a blue box that says "Sign Up". Enter your email address in the box and click on the "Subscribe" button. You will begin receiving announcements from the church office. Concordia Highlights are sent out each week from the church office from a private email list that is maintained by the staff. If you would like to receive the "Highlights" each week, please let the church office know by emailing your intention to Susan Harman

A Message from Our Church Leadership

June 30, 2020 Greetings, Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As you likely know, Governor Cooper has extended North Carolina’s Phase 2 to July 17, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. in response to concerns about the continuing spread of COVID-19 in the state.

On Monday, June 29, 2020, the Board of Elders, Pastor Geml, Chris Henze and Kyle McClure met to determine any changes which might be prudent to the guidelines for Concordia dated June 10, 2020.

Based on our discussion, the following actions were taken:

First, Concordia will continue offering our 9:30 a.m. Praise Worship Service in the Family Life Center and our 11:00 a.m. Traditional Worship Service in the Sanctuary encouraging, but not requiring, the use of face coverings, sanitizing your hands as you enter and exercising social distancing in entering, attending and leaving our worship services. Therefore, the June 10, 2020, guidelines will remain in place until July 17, 2020, at 5:00 p.m.

Second, the Board of Elders have suspended all ministry activities for anyone under the age of 18 years EXCEPT for attending our worship services and any programs in the control of the Day School administration (i.e. Summer Day Camp) to July 17, 2020, at 5:00 p.m.

Third, we encourage the use of face coverings and require social distancing at all Concordia ministry activities.

Each of these decisions remain subject to change by the Board of Elders based on the COVID-19 situation in our county and the state.

May God continue to bless us and keep us safe. David Isenhower

Updates for the summer of

Covid19

Like every other aspect of year 2020, LWML must adapt to life with the new coronavirus. We can do it! Here’s an update:

Joy Event, Directors’ Meetings, Zone Rally, Camp Retreat, and

Convention are cancelled. Briefly, most events will be rescheduled for

2021 with much the same programs and hosts as planned for this year. Stay tuned for details.

Mite Collection July 5, 2020. We still collect Mites! Mission goals for

both National and District are on target despite these evil times. See

https://www.lwml.org/mites-received Concordia collects

congregational Mite Boxes regularly, next one the week of the Fourth. Of course, you can turn them in at the office any time.

(12)

Closer to home than even District beneficiaries of Mites are the

Missions of the Quarter (MOQ), funded by special collections for

immediate needs in our communities. Most recently awarded MOQ went to our own Highways and Hedges. Is there a particular charity near your heart? -- see Ann Marie Blackmon about applying for a MOQ grant.

LWML letter and prayer warriors continue their work. “Our” prisoners

in the Christian Pen Pal organization need our letters more than ever. Ditto our homebound members and those exercising extra caution during the pandemic. Recently Dorcas used some hand-crafted artwork by a prisoner on greeting cards in a mailing to Concordia members. “PG Bear” also continues to extend greetings to many lonely individuals. (Don’t know PG Bear? -- he’s an honored honorary member of LWML.) To get involved with these outreaches, contact Geri Halma or Ann Marie Blackmon. We continue to make it work despite concerns about

gatherings.

Dorcas Society solicits suggestions for projects and outreach efforts.

Stay in touch. How? Easy: Call a Dorcas friend; pick up a Carolinas Cross Connections and Quarterly at the information centers in the church, or check out https://carolinaslwml.webs.com/ccc-forms

LWML Sale Items continue to be available. Rada Cutlery makes great

gifts, and the seasonings are just in time for summer grilling. Greeting cards are always needed. Prices are very competitive with those of local businesses.

For more information or to request items, contact the church office at 828 464 3324 or Ann Marie Blackmon or Opal Bolick.

(13)

Concordia’s Dorcas Society (LWML) have a new account with Rada Cutlery! To place an order go to: https://radafundraising.com/?rfsn=4205605.5b4052. All funds raised go to support the missions of the LWML. Rada knives make great gifts

From the Board of Stewardship

ESTATE PLANNING

“Where there is a Will, there is a Way”

What could happen if I/we do not have a will? If you do not have a will when you die you lose control of your assets. The state will appoint an administrator who divides your assets according to the

state-determined formula regardless of your wishes or special circumstances. This could create a delay and additional expenses in settling your estate. For example, if you are single, your assets will pass to state-selected relatives rather than to friends or charities which you might choose (such as the church).

If you are married, your spouse does not automatically inherit your property but it would be shared with your living children or your parents.

If you have children, your adult children will share equally in your estate, regardless of any special needs some may have and you have no assurance that your children’s shares are protected after they reach age 18. Minor children’s shares are protected by the state and a guardian

(14)

will be appointed for them, however, it may not be the person you would have chosen.

If you have a large estate, taxes are likely to be much higher without the proper tax planning that can come with a will.

While there are other concerns to be considered in not having a will, the Board of Stewardship encourages members to consult with a competent estate attorney and/or financial planner to insure the best approach for writing or changing your will. “Where there is Will, there is a Way” to support our Christian stewardship!

Concordia and the Community

On Sunday, March 15th, our own Lutheran Laymen’s League (LLL) presented a check for $2,000 to the Catawba County Backpack Program. According to Amanda Freeland, who heads up the program, this will help provide over4,000 meals to children in our county. What a blessing!

While speaking to LLL members over breakfast, Amanda shared that they were planning to pack all of the available food supplies that same day for the anticipated needs since schools were going to be out due to the Coronavirus. Their goal was to have the food staged and ready for delivery during this time of unprecedented need.

LLL has supported the Backpack program for over 5 years. Roger Shull and Doug Brady regularly help with the packing of food as well as deliveries. Other Concordia members help via direct contributions as well as hands-on efforts.

More information on the Backpack program can be found on FaceBook at

https://www.facebook.com/CatawbaCountyBackpackProgram. The following is the description of the program provided on their site:

(16)

The Backpack Program serves children in thirty-four local schools who face hunger on the weekends in Catawba County. Each week of the school year over 1,200 children receive a bag full of food. The Backpack Program is in existence because of the community's constant support in the form of volunteers and donors giving their time, talent, and treasures. The program is led by volunteers and is completely reliant on the generous hearts of local donors. The Backpack Program is a county-wide program that works with groups of volunteers and sponsors from each school. Food is purchased in bulk, at cost, in order to be the best steward of donations given. Once bulk purchases are made they are distributed to each school based on how many students receive a backpack full of food each week throughout the school year. Doing it this way only costs $130 for a child to receive food every Friday throughout the school year! Faithful volunteers come and pack bags of food each week at our warehouse facility located at 1925 Tate Blvd SE, Hickory, NC.

The partnership The Backpack Program has with all three local school systems, community partners, numerous churches, service organizations, and

businesses makes the program capable of serving so many children for such a low cost.

Come fight local childhood hunger and help us remove hunger as a barrier to a good education! Help us speak HOPE to the children and families of Catawba County.

For more information on this program, please contact Amanda Freeland, Backpack Program Coordinator, at afreeland@thecornertable.org.

Mrs. Janie Isenhour is retiring! She has faithfully served Concordia Christian Day School for 29 years and has most recently worked as the 1st grade teacher's assistant. We have had many former students come back to the school to visit Mrs. Isenhour to thank her for the difference that she has made to their lives. Mrs. Isenhour is at a loss for words as to how much she will miss seeing everyone's faces and teaching at Concordia. She appreciates each and every child, parent, and staff member at Concordia; they have all given her countless memories she will cherish forever. News From…

University Christian High School

ANNUAL ASSOCIATION MEETING

The annual meeting of the UCHS Lutheran Church Association was held on Tuesday, June 16. Principal Unverfehrt presented his “state of the school” address providing highlights from the 2019-20 school year. These highlights included record enrollment of 148 for the 2020-21 school year that includes 50 new ninth graders, another UCHS school record. Association representative Robin Papas commented on how thankful she was to see the tremendous growth of UCHS from the time her daughter was one of the first 8 students in the school in 2009. We are thankful for all the UCHS Association Churches and encourage other Lutheran churches to join in supporting this ministry to high school students.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2019-2020

Some of the other highlights of the 2019-2020 school year that were mentioned at the UCHS Church Association Meeting included AP Test scores averaging 4.21 with a 95% pass rate and over 750 LRU credit hours earned by our junior and senior classes. Other highlights include over 4,000 volunteer hours by our students in just ¾ of a school year, our State Champion Girls Swim Team, and our Conference Champion Girls and Boys Swim Teams and Girls Tennis Team. We celebrated the success of our Model UN Club at the LRU competition, the College Board Female Diversity Award for our Computer Science Class, the baptism of a ninth-grader, and our first Homecoming Game and Dance. We received many compliments on our outdoor graduation service and on how well our faculty did in continuing our outstanding education during Covid-19 restrictions as we moved to on-line learning. We are thankful for the many ways that God continues to bless UCHS.

CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 2020!
