Easter Sunday

“Return and See”

Hosanna-Tabor Lutheran Church

Sunday, Apr 04, 2021

Rev. Gerhard Mau, Officiating

As We Gather

The Day of Easter appeals to all of the senses—especially the sense of sight. With

joy-filled eyes, we view our place of worship, which has a singular beauty at Easter. We return

and see and rejoice. But the greatest visioning of Easter on this holy day is that we are called

to come and see the risen Christ. By faith, we see the salvation won for us. This is the feast of

victory for our God—and by His grace, once again, we get to view it “up close and personal”!

by Your life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 25:6–9

6On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples

a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine,

of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.

7And he will swallow up on this mountain

the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations.

8He will swallow up death forever;

and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces,

and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken.

9It will be said on that day,

“Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him;

let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God. Stewardship Minute

Holy Gospel Mark 16:1–8

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the sixteenth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord.

1When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome

bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2And very early on the first day of the week,

when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3And they were saying to one another, “Who will

roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4And looking up, they saw that the

stone had been rolled back—it was very large. 5And entering the tomb, they saw a young man

sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. 6And he said to them,

“Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you

to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” 8And they went out and fled from the tomb,

for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

John 20:1 – “Now on the first day of the week …” All is made new by the Resurrection of Jesus! Even the day of worship has transitioned from the Old Testament’s Saturday Sabbath to the Lord’s Day of the New Testament. For the Lord has made all things new. He has begun a new week for a new creation in rising from the dead as the New Adam. We are also made new in Him – a new heart, a new life, new desires, and a new outlook toward God. All this comes from our Risen Lord’s grace. Especially after the sort of year we’ve had since last Easter. It’s sure good news to hear that the Lord makes all things start afresh.

Sermon: “Return and See” (Mark 16:6-7)

Brothers and Sisters, guess what? Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Oh! Return to the grave and see. Jesus is not there. He is alive! Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Come and return and see that your sins are washed away. Come and return and see Your comfort is alive and powerful. Come and return and see that the LORD your God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He relents over disaster. Come and return to the sacrifice that reconciles us with God the Father. Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Come and see that today Jesus is alive.

Come and return that you may see the significance of Christ Jesus’ doings throughout your life. Come and return that you may join all the people of God in marveling God’s breadth and length and height and depth of His love that surpasses knowledge (Eph. 3:18-19). Come and return to see Jesus that the heart be passionate to share the amazing Jesus story with others so that they too may come and return and behold “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” (Phil. 4:7). Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Come, return, and see!

Come and return to our reading from Isaiah and see the future our Lord has won for us. Isaiah writes “On this mountain.” That mountain is Jerusalem. And in Jerusalem the cross was lifted high. And Jesus was crucified. His dead corpse was placed in a grave. But today that corpse is not in that grave. Why? Because Jesus took His body and put life in His body and He walks and talks.

And in this resurrected body Isaiah describes Jesus preparing a feast for all peoples. He sets a table of rich food and of well-aged wine. I’d like to think that includes the most delicate and sumptuous deserts as well. Revelation adds peoples will come and return and see Jesus and join him at His feast. They come “from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages” (7:9).

And a new wonder and miracle happens at this feast. Isaiah this morning describes our resurrected Jesus swallowing “the covering that is cast over all peoples and the veil that is spread over all nations” (Is. 25:7). You’d think Jesus swallowing such a large covering would choke Him. And it did. Jesus choked to death on that cross swallowing the cloak of sin that covers us. We can’t shake off that covering of sin. We can’t uncover our sin and toss it away. We are trapped underneath this covering of sin. This covering of sin clings so stubbornly to our bodies that we cannot strip ourselves of it. Have you ever had something that wouldn’t untie and you couldn’t get it off, maybe a coat or a hat or a shirt or a pair of shoes. You get hot. You feel trapped. That’s how the veil of sin covers you permanently!

But “God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). And we have release from this covering and we have life in Jesus’ name. Jesus swallowed our covering. That means Jesus even swallowed death. Return and come and see Jesus is alive. The day is coming when we will totally be released from the covering that covers the earth. The day is coming when after our bodies are laid in their graves that Jesus will speak a word and our bodies will come to life and walk out of their graves. For in Christ “all things are possible” (Matt. 19:26). Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Come and return and see and scoff sin and death as you are unveiled and now clothed in Christ!

Come, return, and see the seat our Lord has reserved for you at His Table. There is an empty chair waiting for its occupant. That placard on the table has your name on it. Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Rejoice greatly in the LORD! Exult in your God! He has clothed you with the garments of salvation. He has covered you with the robe of righteousness (Is. 61:10). And now you have a seat at His eternal Table!

Come and return and see that Jesus is not in the grave. Then where will the disciples see Jesus? He says in Galilee. Jesus says tell the brethren to go to Galilee. There they will see Jesus. And so they

(5)

came and they saw the Lord risen from the grave. Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! From Galilee our Lord releases His disciples to Go! Make disciples of all nations! Baptize! Teach! But where may the peoples come and see Jesus today? We cannot return to the grave and see Jesus. We cannot return to Galilee and see Jesus. Where may the peoples today come and see Jesus? In the first century, after Jesus’ ascension, the peoples could not return to the grave and see Jesus. In the first century, after Jesus’ ascension, the peoples could not return to Galilee and see Jesus. Instead, Jesus’ apostles came to them. Jesus apostles brought them Jesus’ Word. In the apostles the peoples see Jesus. In the church, in bringing Jesus’ Word, you and I see Jesus. In the church, in bringing Jesus’ Word to others, you bring Jesus to them. And many see Him. And many become alive in Him. Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Isaiah said it so well this morning: “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, that He might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for Him; let us be glad and rejoice in His salvation” (Is. 25:9). We come to Jesus. We return to Jesus. We trust Jesus. We wait for Jesus. And He acts – in His way and in His timing. We see Jesus. We rejoice. We share the Jesus story with others. We say come, return, and see He is not dead in the grave. He is alive. He goes before us to prepare our way to a life and a feast that never ends.

So what else is there to say this day but Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Amen. Hymn 457 Jesus Christ Is Risen Today

1 Jesus Christ is ris’n today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! 2 Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia!

Unto Christ, our heav’nly king, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!

Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

3 But the pains which He endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured; Alleluia! Now above the sky He’s king, Alleluia! Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia! D 4 Sing we to our God above, Alleluia!

Praise eternal as His love; Alleluia! Praise Him, all ye heav’nly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!

Nicene Creed

C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth

and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light,

very God of very God, begotten, not made,

being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made;

who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary

and was made man;

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried.

(6)

and ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life T of the world to come. Amen. Prayer of the Church

P Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Lord God, on this glorious day You raised Your Son from the dead, we pray for the whole Church, that the message of salvation joyfully be told throughout all the world.

C We pray the Easter victory of Jesus Christ be celebrated around the globe.

P We pray for the nations of the world, that the governments of all nations be a source of blessing to those who are governed.

C We pray that oppression in all forms be hindered.

P We pray for ourselves in this season of our Lord’s great victory, that we truly be Easter people all year long.

C We pray we radiate the light of Christ in our homes, workplaces, and communities.

P We pray for all who serve us through their callings, especially for those who deal with special challenges or dangers on a regular basis, including police, fire, and emergency personnel.

C We pray for the military forces of our nation, those stationed both at home and abroad, whose efforts serve to defend our nation in challenging times.

P Comfort those who mourn with the truth of Christ’s empty tomb, that in the midst of their grief they may abide in the hope of His resurrection. Uphold and strengthen all those who face concerns of health or life, including . . . . Grant them the healing You along can provide and use their time on earth as a witness of the day You come to wipe away every tear from the eyes of Your people.

C If it be You will, grant them full healing. Pastor presents the petitions of the congregation.

AAA Pregnancy Resource Center Mother’s Day Gift Baskets

We need your help! Now through Sunday, April 11

Hosanna-Tabor will be offering encouragement to 12 struggling moms of the AAA Pregnancy Resource Center in Livonia by presenting them with Mother’s Day gift baskets. Because of the pandemic, our annual Bring & Bundle Event will not be held this year. Instead, the shopping, assembling and wrapping of the baskets will be done by 2 people in order to minimize the close contact our normal event entails.

A second mission we will be undertaking is to fill gift bags with a few small items for newborns. Some of the moms who were considering abortion when walking into the center have chosen life for their babies after being presented with one of these bags. What a powerful gift!

Despite the change in procedure, we still need your help to achieve our goals:

1. If you can quilt, crochet or knit, we would love for you to craft a baby blanket in which to wrap one of these precious little ones! Our goal is to line each of the baby bathtubs with a handmade blanket. Please be sure to bring your blanket to the Narthex by Sunday, April 25.

2. Another way to help is by making a contribution to defray the cost. You will find a diaper bag and envelopes in the Narthex through Sunday, April 11. If you’d like to donate, please enclose cash or a check (made payable to Hosanna-Tabor Lutheran Church) in an envelope and drop it in the diaper bag. You can also use one of the Designated Gifts envelopes from your personal box of offering envelopes. Those of you who aren’t comfortable entering the building at this time can send a check in the mail. Whichever method you choose, please be sure to indicate that your gift is for, “AAA Bring & Bundle.”

We set a goal of raising $1500 for this beautiful cause. To date you have donated $1070!! THANK YOU

John 12:12-19: Hosanna, save us now! Our cry for help is the same as those on the first Palm Sunday. Our Lord has not only heard our cries, but has answered them with His perfect life, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection. As ones who have already been saved by Christ’s life and death, we have the opportunity to share that very same saving rescue with others in our daily lives.

Concordia News

Spring has sprung! The birds are singing, the grass is growing, flowers are sprouting, and the children in first and second grade are enjoying the nice weather! We hope you are enjoying it too!! In Reading, the first graders wrote paragraphs of their super fun day at a special place they enjoy. They wrote about Disney Land, the pond, Florida, the beach, the ocean, their cousin’s house, Indiana, etc. They had an enjoyable time writing many adjectives to describe the various things they did at their super fun place.

In English, the second grades wrote persuasive paragraphs to convince someone to get something for themselves, the family, or the classroom. They wrote about getting a classroom pet, getting a kitten for the family, and getting new games for the computer. They wrote some good reasons to have people get them the items they wanted. We will have to wait and see if they get them. (Unfortunately, we cannot have a classroom pet. However, the paragraph the student wrote was very persuasive.)

In Social Studies, we have been studying needs and wants. The students created a 3-D triarama of what they would need and want to take camping. The children could only pick three needs and three wants to put on their picture. We had a lot of discussion of what was the most important things for them to have on the camping trip. They came up with a variety of shelters, clothes, and food to take with them. But they were also resourceful of bringing a favorite pillow/sleeping bag, journal/book, and stuffed animal/teddy bear too! The triaramas turned out quite well. Please see our Facebook page for the pictures of the children with the triaramas.
