Lesney Super Kings Jaguar Police Car - Code 3
Posted by gcladd - 18 Mar 2020 15:57 _____________________________________
I don’t have many Lesney Super Kings in my collection, but I picked one up back in 2016 that was in rough shape in a bag lot at a Value Village Outlet thrift store for a couple of bucks.

This vehicle had a couple of broken roof lights and a missing spot light. I was never impressed with the way Lesney put the critical features of the police car on top of a “suitcase”, so I knew that as soon as I bought it that this police car would become normalized to look like a real cop car.

One of the reasons this project took so took so long to start was the quest to find some new roof accessories. Picked up for fifty cents last fall a New Ray Crown Victoria police car at the Mission Thrift Store that was in a rather tattered state, but the roof light was in great condition.
My apologies for not having a photo but this sucker came apart as soon as I found it. Although the cop cars in my home town don’t have alternate blue/red roof lights (or Jaguars), this part was to become the
basis of the Super Kings Jaguar redesign

The Super King was taken apart stripped and primed in the usual manner with chemical paint strippers. It was sanded smooth and wiped down with methyl hydrate to remove and residual stripper
The original “suitcase” holes in the roof were patched with Bondo and sanded smooth. A new set of holes were drilled to match the holes in the New Ray Crown Vic.

I did not want to remove the trunk lid so the Jag was primed with several light coats of white primer to ensure all surfaces were covered evenly. I also stripped and primed the chassis plate.

This is interesting and I am following it. Good so far and should be a great save. ============================================================================

After looking at my options, I decided the Jaguar needed rims and tires that suited an original vehicle in this price range. The one piece Speed King tires had already been removed from the chassis for painting, so a set of wheels/tires with the same diameter were added from my scrap box.

Chrome details were sprayed and the vehicle has been reassembled. The posts were drilled (#51 drill bit or one size smaller I find is better for softer metals like Aluminum) and threaded for 2-56 UNC stainless steel screws
It is starting to look like something that a speeding driver would be proud to be pulled over by. Some small chrome painting detail on the rear bumper stands out and will bug me if I don’t fix before adding decals.

The Covid-19 quarantines in the school system during, the March break has turned into something I wasn’t expecting so (I am going to be so far behind with my courses), I am going to make some custom decals for this car, maybe as a London Ontario or a St Thomas police cruiser.
Last weekend I picked up a rather battered Speed kings White and Orange Bandolero police car (love these futuristic designs Lesney did in the 70’s) at a yard sale which I will also be working on during the Covid-19 quarantine days.
Thinking of doing a polished version for this one that is a cross between something out of Back to the Future and the Mad Max interceptor.

Posted by gcladd - 18 Mar 2020 16:54 _____________________________________ Thanks Jim.
Decals test "prototype" page did quit work out as planned, but I hope to get that problem corrected. I have decal sheets to do these on an inkjet and a colour Laserjet, with the laser jet being my preference. Unfortunately I can't get into my school for several weeks so I will be doing these on my (needs a new magenta cartridge) inkjet and clear coating before application.
I will keep you guys posted.

I am surprised that your not doing your courses on line like all the schools etc in BC are doing. They will not fall behind and even universities are offer that and also graduating some students early if they are on their final year.

Must be nice to get current models. Here we are still seeing 2019 models. They just keep coming back. Both Hot Wheels and Matchbox.

Ministry of Education in BC obviously got the March Break/Covid -19 thing right.
I gave my classes some online work to do, but the last word on that was that we are not allowed to give students any new work online during the 2 week quarantine period that can be assessed. I have posted online assignments but it cannot be graded and be included as part of their semester mark.
Between this and the contract negotiations/random strike days in Ontario by teachers, this semester has been a pain in the neck. I have one grade 12 class and I am sure colleges and universities will not expecting a realistic assessment based on academic performance.
