Graduating Year: 2013 Why did you decide to study at William Angliss Institute?

William Angliss Institute provided me with a welcoming environment with strong specialisations.

Rather than studying with a lecture theatre full of accounting and marketing students, I could study my subjects with peers and lecturers who are like-minded and passionate about hospitality and tourism and relate all the course content back to a relevant scenario within my industry.

What are some of your achievements at the Institute?

> Being awarded a scholarship to travel to Berjaya University College of Hospitality & Tourism (2010) to study for 6 months.

> Networking with industry professionals in class and additional institute events. > Becoming an ambassador for

the Institute and being able to speak about my experience at events.

> Receiving decent grades, allowing me to gain a good position within Peter Rowland Catering after graduating.

Have you started your Work Integrated Learning year? Where are you working?

I completed my Work Integrated Learning in 2012 at Grand Hyatt Melbourne.

I was signed on as a Guest Services Officer within their Grand Club Lounge however, after four months was then moved down to the Front Desk to better utilise my customer service skills.

Has the Institute helped you build networking skills?

By bringing industry professionals into our classrooms we as students are given the rare opportunity to ask questions, interact and be known by potential future employers.

The William Angliss lecturers are past industry professionals, so they are valuable connections to have. They are the ones who have the ability to pass your name into the industry and rank your competency against your peers. I have now been to five job interviews, all of which were a result of my Lecturers' help.

Would you recommend the Degree programs at the Institute?

For one to succeed in the industry as a recognised professional, a degree will lead me there quickly and better equipped then any other qualification. In my Industry Placement in 2012 at Grand Hyatt Melbourne, all my colleagues in the Front Office department had graduated from the course I was undertaking which sent a clear message to me: my employers were not accepting anything less then a degree.

Where are you

completing your Industry Placement Program?

I am currently placed as a Food and Beverage attendant at Melbourne Convention Exhibition Centre. MCEC offers me the opportunity to work in various roles at many different events. For me, this is one of the best chances to learn about the event industry by seeing firsthand and working professionally while studying.

What makes you passionate about the industry you work in?

Knowing I can make people happy through the events, seeing people enjoying the festivals.

What was a moment in your career or training that you are extremely proud of?

I have met many people from different countries and famous people especially, the Dalai Lama whilst working here at

MCEC. When I explain the menu with a big smile, many people say “I have been to Sydney, America, Vancouver, convention centres all around the world, but Melbourne Convention Centre’s food and service is without a doubt the best.”

I am so proud to represent an event venue in this way.

How did your study with William Angliss Institute help you to achieve that moment?

My classmates and teachers helped me not only be filled with passion for the event industry, but also helped me to adapt to my new circumstances as an international student. Moreover, once a week, all event students were given the chance to meet event planners who share their experience on a school excursion. Every time when I went on an excursion, they gave me inspiration and ideas for my future event management plans.
