From the Principal

Dear Zillmere families and friends

It is wonderful to be back at school, celebrating children’s achievements, after my recent period of leave. I would like to express my appreciation to Mrs McKay for leading the dedicated team at Zillmere, who have continued our strategic plan for aiming high following our school review earlier this year.

2020 is the year your children will be telling your great grandchildren about in the future. As a school community, we have responded to the unique circumstances of COVID-19 and united as students, staff and families. Our staff appreciate your partnership and tireless commitment to your child’s academic progress and wellbeing during the learning-at-home period. You must be so proud, as are we, of their demonstrated resilience and growing independence.

Semester Two Student Reporting

All families who have given us a current email address should have received their child’s academic report electronically on Monday. For those families without email, a paper copy of the academic report will be given to your child today. If children are absent from school today, their report will be posted to the address on our database. If you have not seen your child’s report, electronically or hard copy, please let us know.

Zillmere State School’s individual reports include a personal focus for learning for each student in English and Mathematics. We encourage you to share these reports with your children. Celebrate the progress they have achieved, and discuss the goals and focus for the 2021 year of schooling. Establishing positive and powerful conversations that reflect the value we place on learning is a wonderful way to inspire our young learners to continue on their own learning journey.

2021 Staff

Staffing arrangements for 2021 are currently based on predicted enrolments of students [Prep – Year 6] at Zillmere State School. Parents/Carers need to be aware the staffing of all Queensland schools is based on enrolments on Day

8 of each school year. Ultimately, Day 8 may bring changes to class structures due to any significant increases or

decreases in overall student enrolments. If any class changes are necessary, we will communicate this to all parents early in the new school year.

Our predicted enrolment makes provision for 6 Primary classes across the school. We have planned the following classes: Prep/Year 1 [2 classes]; Year 2 / 3 [2 classes]; and Year 4 /5 /6 [2 classes].

This year we farewell several of our teachers who have made Zillmere a special place for children to learn and grow. Mrs Reyno, Mr Young, Mrs Herrmann, Miss Bunney, Mrs Ward, and Mrs Cassimatis will be leaving Zillmere State School and we wish them health, happiness and success in the future. Mrs Tukuafu is taking leave in 2021 and returning to us in 2022.

Next year, we welcome Miss Banks, Ms Jones and Mr Brennan to our teaching staff. These teachers visited Zillmere last week to plan curriculum with Mrs Cassimatis, and have expressed to me how excited they are to be joining such a dynamic and culturally rich school environment.

Student Leaders

During the final assembly yesterday, we announced the student leaders for 2021. School Captains: Peyton T and France A

Cultural Captain: Ayana F

Student Council President: Deacon N

The student leaders are discussing their ideas to involve students across all year levels in a variety of activities to make Zillmere an even more exciting learning environment.

Keeping Children Cyber-Safe

The online world is powerful and engaging for us all. Parents and carers have an important role to play in helping their children manage online risks so their experiences are safe and positive.

Schools provide a secure online educational environment, with teacher guidance and supervision to support students to safely negotiate communication technologies.

The link below will provide information and advice for families to keep your children cyber-safe over the holiday break.

Today, Wednesday 9th December, is our last day of school for this year. Thursday and Friday are student free days.

If you are heading interstate for the break and plan on returning after the start of the next school year, which begins on Wednesday 27th January, please take a moment to confirm your plans with us. You may email the

Uniform Shop

Our uniform shop will be open on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th January, from 9am – 1pm. Our school office will be open on Monday 18th January.

Zillmere School Watch

We need everyone to look out for after-hours crime in our school. Nobody is permitted to access the school grounds after hours without written permission. If you see anything suspicious, don't attempt to intervene. Call the School Watch number – 13 17 88.

The School Watch Program is a partnership between Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in Queensland schools. Let's work together to help create a safer Zillmere School community.

On behalf of the staff, I wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday break with family and friends, and look forward to seeing you again for an exciting 2021 at Zillmere State School! You are welcome to email:

admin@zillmeress.eq.edu.au during the holidays if you wish. See you all on Wednesday, 27th January 2021!

Prep

Sadly this is our last Prep news for the year! Firstly, I would like to thank you all for being so supportive of your child’s learning this year. It has been a complete pleasure teaching your child this year. I feel so proud when I look at them as a class, so ready for Year 1.  Thank you also for the beautiful thank you emails, they are all heart warming and very much appreciated. I think my family knows each and every one of your names as I have proudly shared them many times. 

Don’t forget to keep up sight word recognition and reading over the holidays. Research tells us that children who read for at least 10 minutes a day over the holidays have a better start to the new school year than children who spend little or no time reading. Reading over the holidays helps children maintain or improve the reading level that they developed through the school year. Children who don't read over the holidays can lose core reading skills and slide backwards,

potentially falling behind when they return to school. I wish you a very Merry Christmas with your loved ones and safe holidays.

Michelle Tukuafu 

Prep/Year 1

Congratulations to all parents and students for making it through another year. We had a wonderful celebration at our end of year party. We made Christmas presents with some cookies, we ate some yummy food and Mr Reyno came in to make us some balloon creations.

It is very heartbreaking for me to say that I will not be returning to Zillmere State School next year. Fate has taken Mr Reyno and I all the way to the Cairns Tablelands. I would like to thank all staff, students and parents for the amazing experience I have had at this school. There will always be a little bit of my heart here. I wish the absolute best for everyone. Don’t worry, I have already organised to be pen

pals with Mrs Evans.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday. Mrs Jacqui Reyno.

Year 2

Season’s Greetings and Farewell!

And so the school year of 2020 closes. It is time for year 2 students to take a break before embarking on the year 3 journey.

Students have made creditable progress in a year of many challenges. Many have made huge improvements in reading and now enjoy time spent reading books and also reading online. It is hoped that this love continues through the holidays. Students have made great gains in their maths understanding that will contribute to future success as well.

After assessments and our move, we have made time for some fun activities. See pic!

I have been privileged to be the class teacher for some of our students for 3 years and others only 1 or 2 years, but all have made astonishing progress in their goals. It will

be difficult to say goodbye, but they know that I will always be interested in their progress!

Wishing our students and their families, happy times and safe travels and looking forward to hearing all the stories next year! Ms Paulene Forde

“Aim High”

What a year this has been!!! Who would have thought that on Tuesday, 28th January, 2020, the first day of this school year, we would have experienced all that this year has entailed? Rather than dwell on the negatives, we can recognise the greater resilience and adaptability we have all had the opportunity to develop. For our Year Sixes, these qualities will help equip them for the experiences and changes that high school will present to them. I aim to live life with no regrets and I define this in two ways. The first is to treat people fairly and respectfully so straight away and in the future, I have no regrets in the way I have acted towards them. The second thought is to experience all the opportunities that arise throughout life so I have no regrests about missing out on some opportunity. That is why I feel I have had a very rich life....from scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, trekking to Mt Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas of Nepal to tandem skydiving in New Zealand. It is my wish for each of our students, and particularly our Year Six graduates at this stage in their life, that they also go forward into life, living without regrets.

I wish all of our ZSS community safe holidays, a blessed Christmas, a happy new year and successful 2021.

What a busy but ‘different’ 2020 we had.

Reminders

None, just make sure you have a relaxing and sensational holiday everyone!!
