The Impact of Work Schedule, Physical Demands and Sleep

on Nurse Injury and Patient Outcomes

Alison Miller Trinkoff, RN, ScD, FAAN; Professor, University of Maryland School of Nursing

For over 25 years, Dr. Trinkoff, as a nurse and epidemiologist, has conducted research with a major focus on assessing the impact of working conditions on nurse health and patient outcomes. She has an extensive resume of funded research on topics ranging from nurses’ substance use, job demands and work-related musculoskeletal disorders, work schedules, needlestick injuries and the impact of organizational factors on patient and worker safety. Dr. Trinkoff is a tenured Professor in Family and Community Health at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing.

Unveiling the Revised Iowa Model

Thursday, April 23 • 12:00 - 2:00 pm

Laura Cullen, DNP, RN, FAAN; EBP Scientist, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

Barbara Rakel, PhD, RN, FAAN; Associate Professor, University of Iowa College of Nursing

The Iowa Model, originally developed in 1994, provides direction for use of a systematic and scholarly EBP process leading to high quality health care. The Model has been adopted and adapted in a variety of settings, with over 3,000 requests to use, from throughout the US and 38 other countries. As science supporting EBP continually expands, the authors revised the Iowa Model in 1998. Now 15 years later, a University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics-College of Nursing collaboration used a mixed methods approach to determine contemporary user’s experiences with the Model. Working step-by-step through the EBP process, a concensus was formed resulting in a final revision. This revised Iowa Model will be unveiled with a description of updates for participant discussion.

Dr. Bisantz is Professor and Chair of the department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Her PhD is from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Her research is in the area of human factors and cognitive engineering, applied to complex domains such as health care and military command-and-control, and in particular to the design of information technology for emergency medicine. She is an editor of the recent book, “Cognitive Systems Engineering for Heath Care” and is a Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.
