records of the Vice-Admiralty Courtat Halifax,Nova
Scotia, covering the period oftheAmerican
Revo-lution, are
now
preserved in the Provincial Building atHalifax, in the custody of the Provincial Secretary.
The
registers for the years 1776-1783 are in three folio
vol-umes and
preserve only the essential facts.The
originalfiles of documents relating to each case havedisappeared.
Some
years ago a considerable mass ofmanuscriptswas
found stored at the
Navy
Yard
in Halifax, and after burninga portionandselling considerable for junk, there-mainder
was
sent to the Admiralty Office inLondon.
Possibly
some
of these Vice-Admiralty Court papersmay
have found their
way
toLondon
in this manner.The
Vice-Admiralty Courtrecords for the period of theWar

be possible to secure additional informationupon
application to the office of the Prothonotary. Thesefiles in

instances contain a considerablenumber
ofpapers in addition to the
documents
of the Court.The
ship's papers, if not already destroyed at the time of
cap-ture, will be found, consisting of the commission

the ship's register orlicense, thecrew
list, bill of health, various bills of lading, andsome-times owner's instructions withbusiness correspondence.

under date ofApril15,1776. Previous to that timeprizes taken along the

coast had beencondemned
at a Vice-Admiralty Court sitting in Boston.Two
