PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Commit tee BD/71 on Cemetery Monuments with the objective of enabling cemetery authorities to s pecify minimum struc tural design crite ria, performance , installation and renovat ion requirements f or above-grou nd burial structures.

FOREWORD

This Standard is inten ded to cover all possible structures in cemeteries not covered by AS 4204, including those commonly known as mausoleums, vaults, fam ily vaults, underground vaults, crypts, garden crypts, tombs, lined graves and similar . Descrip tions may vary with location.

The term mauso leum was consi dered as a word which coul d cover all of these struc tures. However, it calls to mind a large imposing structure. Mausolus was a rule r of Caria. On his death his spouse Arti mesia built a large colonnaded edifice at Halicarnassus for his burial (circ a 350 BCE). It was 50 m high and was surmounted by a truncated pyrami d supporting a four horse chario t. It w as rega rded in classical times as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Another structure referred to as a mausoleum is the Taj Mahal.

It should be noted that cemeteries operate under state law and there may be specific requireme nts for ento mbmen t of huma n remain s which affect the design , construction and use of structures built in different states.
