What is Eucharistic Adoration?

Our Parish Mission Statement

The Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate ConcepƟon and AssumpƟon of Our Lady is a EucharisƟc community: glorifying the Father, united with the Son,

led by the Holy Spirit and protected by Mary. We are called to pray, educate and serve God’s people in this life and in the hope of eternal life. Understood simply, EucharisƟc AdoraƟon is

adoring or honoring the EucharisƟc Presence of Christ. In a deeper sense, it involves "the contem-plaƟon of the Mystery of Christ truly present before us" -- Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity!

EucharisƟc AdoraƟon is "God and Man reaching out for each other, at the same Ɵme!" At the mo-ment of consecraƟon during Mass, the "giŌs" of bread and wine are transformed (transubstanƟated) into the actual Body and Blood of Christ. The ele-ments retain the appearance of bread and wine.

At the beginning of the exposiƟon of the Blessed Sacrament, a priest or deacon removes the sacred host from the tabernacle and places it in the Monstrance on the altar for adoraƟon by the faithful. "Monstrance" is the vessel used in the Church to display the consecrated EucharisƟc Host during

EucharisƟc adoraƟon or benedicƟon. The word monstrance comes from the LaƟn word monstrare, meaning "to expose." It is known in LaƟn as an Os-tensorium. When a consecrated host is placed in the monstrance, it is said to be a solemn exposiƟon.

When the Monstrance contains the Sacred Host, the priest or deacon does not touch it with his bare hands but, instead, holds it with a humeral veil, a wide band of cloth that covers his shoul-ders (humera) and has pleats on the inside in which he places his hands.

The (reserved) Blessed Sacrament serves as a focal point of devoƟon.

At all other Ɵmes, the reserved Sacra-ment is kept locked in the Tabernacle so that the faithful may pray in the presence of the Sacrament. The Blessed Sacra-ment is given the same adoraƟon and devoƟon that is accorded to Christ.

"Perpetual AdoraƟon" is EucharisƟc AdoraƟon round the clock (that is, 24 hours a day). A "Holy Hour" is "EucharisƟc AdoraƟon of ReparaƟon" which lasts for about an hour. AdoraƟon ceremonies tradiƟonally include Scripture readings, hymns, prayers and Ɵme for silent adoraƟon.

EucharisƟc exposiƟon and benedicƟon are a complete liturgical service in their own right and are celebrated as such. EucharisƟc exposiƟon and bene-dicƟon are no longer considered devoƟons but ra-ther are a part of the Church's oĸcial liturgy.

This liturgy is designed to "acknowledge Christ's marvelous presence in the Sacrament and invites us to the spiritual union with Him that culminates in sacramental communion." In the past, benedicƟon was someƟmes added on to the end of another ser-vice or devoƟon; this is no longer done.

"Could you not watch one hour with Me?" (Mt.

26:40) Jesus waits for us in the Blessed Sacrament. He waits for our liƩle acts of faith, adoraƟon, love, thanksgiving, repentance, reparaƟon and charity that we can oīer Him as we contemplate His Divine Majesty in the Blessed Sacrament.

O SACRAMENT MOST HOLY! O SACRAMENT DIVINE!

ALL PRAISE AND ALL THANKSGIVING BE EVERY MOMENT THINE!

Nex¥ Weekend’s Readings

FiŌh Sunday of Easter, Year B

Reading I: Acts 9: 26-31

St. Paul not only witnesses the risen Jesus but also has become His missionary. At the same Ɵme, Paul’s conversion evidently brought peace to the PalesƟnian Church communiƟes.

Reading II: I John 3: 18-24

God, being “greater than our hearts,” sƟll inspires conĮdence even if our consciences condemn us. As a result, we do what pleases Him.

The Gospel: John 15: 1-8

The vine and branch imagery includes an assurance from Jesus that the Word of God has made the disciples safe from prun-ing. When these disciples “bear fruit” as His emissaries, they glorify the Father.

Edwin Cardinal O’Brien

8th Graders Receive the Sacrament of ConĮrmaƟon

Edwin Cardinal

O’Brien will be here this week to visit with Fr. Sorgie and confer the Sacrament of

ConĮrmaƟon on our 8th Graders in three Masses this coming week. Because of COVID restricƟons, we cannot Ňing wide our doors to invite the whole parish, but rather have even restricted the guests of each ConĮrmandi.

The Cardinal comes from Rome where he has

Įnished his term working with the Equestrian Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. Cardinal O’Brien was born and went to School at Our Lady of Solace on Morris Park Avenue in the Bronx and then in Westchester County at St. Mary’s parish in Katonah. He went to St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, and his assignments have ranged from military service during the Vietnam conŇict, to the Secretary to Cardinal Terrance Cooke, to the Rector of our Seminary, and Rector of the Pon-ƟĮcal North American College in Rome. In 1996, he was or-dained a Bishop and then the Archbishop of the U.S. Military and the Archbishop of BalƟmore, before being named Grandmaster of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre by Pope Benedict XVI.

Please pray for our ConĮrmandi as they receive the giŌs of the Holy Spirit and conƟnue their faith journeys.

277. “What is a Cardinal in our Church?”

Immediately below the Pope in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church are the Cardinals. The primary

responsibility of a Cardinal is to elect a new Pope when one dies or abdicates the papacy. However, Cardinals don’t just hang out doing nothing unƟl the Pope dies; they have many responsibiliƟes.

Cardinals form the Roman Curia, which is a whole group of administrators (Cardinal Prefects) — something like cabinet members who assist the President or

department ministers who assist the Prime Minister. For example, a Cardinal Secretary of State represents the VaƟcan to foreign governments. Other Cardinals have diīerent areas of responsibility called congregaƟons. One Cardinal oversees all the bishops around the world, another congregaƟon is Catholic educaƟon, another deals with evangelizaƟon, and so on. The Cardinals in the Curia serve as the Pope’s right-hand men, so to speak.

A diīerent Cardinal also heads up each of several commissions and councils as well as three high courts of the Catholic Church — the Apostolic PenitenƟary, the Ap-ostolic Signatura, and the Roman Rota — all of which deal with canon law and its applicaƟon and interpretaƟon. Cardinals who don’t work in the Curia run an Archdio-cese, mostly funcƟoning as an Archbishop would — ordaining, conĮrming, and doing the day-to-day business of being chief shepherd of the Archdiocese. These

Cardinals may also supervise two to several dioceses, usu-ally all in the same state or region.

We have two examples of these various works of a Cardinal in New York: 1. Timothy Cardinal Dolan who is our Archbishop in the Archdiocese of New York and 2. Cardinal Metropolitan of the Dioceses in the State of New York Edwin Cardinal O’Brien (he is also the reƟred

Grandmaster of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre – the worldwide order that cares for the Holy Land — and that would fall into a diīerent category).
