British Standards for Particleboard
Panel Guide produced by Wood Panel Industries Federation, Timber Trade Federation, TRADA & BRE
& National Green Specification – August 2006
According to the both the Panel Guide and NGS (National Green Specification) - an independent organisation
partnered with the Building Research Establishment to provide information to those involved with ‘Sustainable
Construction’ - the current British Standard for specifying particleboard is BS EN 312:2003.
BS EN 312:2003: Particleboards. Specifications
There are various types of board defined in BS EN 312 which indicate the range of use conditions of particleboard,
with common applications including flooring, kitchen units and worktops, furniture and shopfitting.
The 2003 version of this standard, replaced the previous 1997 version of BS EN 312, which was issued in seven
parts. BS EN 312 specifies the requirements for particleboards to be used in dry and humid conditions, as
particleboard is not normally suitable for exterior applications. With the introduction of the 2003 version of this
standard a new grade of particleboard was introduced. This new grade was termed P3 and is intended to be a
moisture resistant non-load bearing board, which should reduce the risk of moisture failure compared with the
alternative grade P2.
The basic mechanical properties of particleboard are controlled by BS EN 312 and design characteristic values for
use of the load-bearing grades with Eurocode 5 are given in BS EN 12369-1.
According to the Panel Guide, Cement Bonded Particleboard manufactured in Europe must be specified in
accordance with the European standard EN 634. The UK version of this standard is BS EN 634. This standard
states that particleboard can be bonded with Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) or with magnesium-based cements.
This standard has two parts:
BS EN 634-1: Cement-bonded particleboards – Specifications – Part 1: General Requirements
BS EN 634-2: Cement-bonded particleboards – Specifications – Part 2: Requirements for OPC bonded
particleboards for use in dry, humid and exterior conditions.
The second part of this standard BS EN 634:2 relates only to Ordinary Portland Cement Cement Bonded
Particleboard Board. These boards have a very high durability and are suitable for use in dry, humid or exterior
conditions. Their high density gives them good acoustic and fire performance. They are used for flooring, modular
buildings and applications where high durability is required.
The Panel Guide also states that Cement Bonded Particleboard that is used in construction must, by law, comply
with the Harmonised Standard for wood-based panels which is BS EN 13986.

Metal Cladding & Roofing Manufacturers Association
According to the Metal Cladding & Roofing Manufacturers Association there are currently no British Standards
covering the stone coated metal tile product which Satjam manufacture.
The only British Standard in place which relates to this type of product is a code of practice for cladding buildings –
BS 5427.
In order to trade in the UK, Satjam may be required to meet British Standards with regards to the components of
their tile product. That is, Satjam may be required to meet the British Standards set for the materials used for the
tile for example regulations on the base metal, the coatings etc.
RoofConsult – May 2006
RoofConsult are an advisory service involved in the UK roofing and cladding industry.
The British Standards, listed on the RoofConsult website, which relate most closely to the products produced by
Satjam are those covering Sheeting and Cladding and those covering Metal Roofing.
The Standards shown on the RoofConsult website are as follows:

David George (RoofConsult’s Standards & Flat Roofing Materials Expert):
Mr. George from RoofConsult has advised that as far as his records, and those of a colleague of his at BSI, shows
there are no specific British or European standards for steel roof tiles.
Mr. George recommended that the Czech companies approach a testing board such as the BBA to have their
product tested in order to receive certification for selling in the UK.
Alternatively he suggested they apply for an E-Tag in order to receive CE marking for the product.
