Step by step how to apply for a DiGiD
To begin, select aanvragen on www.digid.nlPlease Note: Fields accompanied by * are obligatory.
1. Use the field Sofi-nummer to fill in your public service number (burgerservicenummer, BSN). This is a
registration number that applies to every citizen in the Netherlands. It is appointed to every Dutch person at birth. When you come to live in the Netherlands at a later time, you have to request a public service number yourself. More information on the public service number can be found here. The number consists of 9 figures.
2. Select your date of birth in the Geboortedatum field
3. Fill in the postal code of your Dutch address at the Postcode field.
4. In the Huisnummer field you may fill in your street number. The system can automatically determine
what street you live in.
5. Does your house address have an additional letter or number, such as for an apartment or floor? You
may fill this in within the Huisnummertoevoeging field. Or leave it blank if it is not relevant.
6. In the E-mailadres field you can fill in your e-mail address. To prevent errors you are requested to fill
in your e-mail address a second time at E-mailadres herhalen.
7. To continue you must first agree to the general conditions. These can be viewed by clicking on the
word gebruiksvoorwaarden. Unfortunately the conditions are only available in Dutch.
The following screen will appear:
9. In the Gebruikersnaam field (username) you can fill in a username of your choice. Your username has
to consist of at least 4 characters, which can be letters, numbers, a hyphen (-) or an underscore (_).
10. In the field that reads Tijdelijk wachtwoord (temporary password) you have to enter a password.
This password should consist of at least 8 characters, one of these being a figure. This temporary password can be reset once you activate your account with the activation code that is send to you in the post.
11. Fill in your temporary password again in the field that reads Herhaal wachtwoord (repeat password).
This is to prevent errors.
Please note whether you use capital or small letters! DiGiD does make a distinction between the two.
The following screen will appear:
13. This screen has the option to request sms-authenticatie (text message validation). When using text
message validation with DiGiD you will be required to enter an additional code next to the standard login codes. This additional code is sent to you by text message. This serves as an extra security measure and provides access to more government services.
14 and 15. Do you want to use text message validation? Then enter your mobile phone number in the
field that reads Mobiele telefoonnummer and click Verder > (Next).
16. If you want to go back, click < Terug.
The following screen will appear if you chose to use text message validation:
18. If you chose to use text message validation then you will have received a validation code on your
mobile phone. Enter the code in the field reading Vul hier de code uit uw sms in.
19. Afterwards, please click on Verder > (Next).
20. The screen below confirms that your application was successful:
This screen appears when you have successfully completed your application. Within 5 days you will receive a letter in the post containing an activation code. After entering the activation code you can start using DiGiD.
How do I activate my DiGiD?
21. Following your application you will receive a letter from DiGiD containing your activation code. Go to
www.digid.nl and choose the option Activeren (Activate ) in the menu on the left.
The following screen will appear:
22. If you applied for DiGiD without text message validation, then choose the top option, which reads U
hebt zelf DigiD aangevraagd.
23. If you applied for DiGiD with text message validation, then choose the bottom option, which reads U
The following screen will appear:
24. In the field that reads Activeringscode you may enter the activation code you received with the
DiGiD letter in the post.
25. In the field that reads Gebruikersnaam you may enter the username that you chose earlier during
the application process.
26. In the field that reads Wachtwoord (password) you have to enter a new password. This password
should consist of at least 8 characters, one of these being a figure. This temporary password can be reset once you activate your account with the activation code that is send to you in the post.
27. Fill in your temporary password again in the field that reads Herhaal wachtwoord (repeat password).
This is to prevent errors.

28. Next, you may click on Activeren (vertaling).
29. The following screen will appear when you have successfully activated your DigiD:
How to use DiGiD
When using a form that requires a formal digital signature, you will be automatically transferred to the login page for DiGiD. The screen below will appear:
30. Fill in your username and click the Verder > (Next) button.
Next, a screen will appear in which you may choose to log in either by entering your DiGiD password, or by using text message validation in addition to entering your DiGiD password. This second option serves as an extra security measure – next to your password you will then be required to enter a code that is sent to your mobile phone by text message.
31. Enter your password in the Wachtwoord (password) field. Next, click on Inloggen (log in).
Did you choose the option of logging in by using only a password? Then you will now be logged in and you may start filling in the form.
If you chose the option of using your mobile phone, then another screen will appear first:
32. Within a few seconds you will receive a code by text message on your mobile phone. Enter this code
in the Transactiecode field.
33. Next, click on the Inloggen > (log in) button. You are now logged in and may start to fill in the form.
