A Happy Death

Dear Friends

,

The Church has enjoyed a beautiful tradition during November of remembering the faithful departed. A happy death follows from a life of fidelity and joy. Hope in God allows us to place our complete trust in Him. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI artfully describes the hope we place in God with his encyclical, Spe Salvi, (Saved by Hope), 2007. One of his dominant themes is that we learn hope through prayer. Our fidelity to prayer, both in easy and difficult times, allows us to trust in God’s abiding presence. The Holy Father also teaches in this letter that we practice hope through suffering. Suffering is a part of every life and we experience it through our pain. Joy is still possible and is found in a life that trusts in God, never loses heart, and is faithful with our responsibilities to Him and one another.

The kingdom value of joy is meant to be captured in this life while anticipating the eternal joy which awaits us. Joy was one of the three kingdom values which Christ taught. Later, Saint Paul was to place joy as one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. We experience joy when we practice justice and strive to live in peace with God and one another. Joy comes from a knowledge that we are made in God’s image and we are of inestimable worth before Him. Other people have no right to demean us because God does not demean us. At times our lives can become harried as we are subjected to meanness or coarseness. We should take solace in the assurance that God’s love sustains us. It is a love founded of the infinite worth of each and every life. Joy centers our love in this great mystery and prevents us from wallowing in self-pity. The reminder of our self-worth before God brings us joy and spurns us on to seek goodness, beauty, and truth.

Graced before God, we realize that the human person was made for redemption and responsibility. Our redemption was made possible because Christ accepted death on the Cross for our salvation. Heaven is now attainable through the merits of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection. We need not live hopelessly or in gloom but, rather, with hope and joy as we strive to reach our eternal destiny. By ourselves we cannot reach the kingdom, but by joining our efforts with Christ’s grace the kingdom of heaven is possible. God wills it. We must strive to attain it. This is joy because all things are possible with God. (Mt. 19:26). We are made for responsibility. God wants us to succeed. He has given us everything necessary to equip us. The parable of the irresponsible tenants in the vineyard is instructive (Mt. 21:33-46). The owner leaves his workers with everything in place for a successful crop...a hedge, a wine press, and a tower. Then he went away. The workers were irresponsible and brought about the owner’s sever judgment upon his return. God has blessed us with many things to sustain us. We have our faith, our Church, the sacramental life, the Mass, our families, homes, and professional lives. By approaching each in its proper order, joy can be at the heart of our lives. Christ will come again, and when He does he wants to find us fulfilling our responsibilities...not forfeiting inheritance.

Pope John Paul II in his encyclical, Veritatis Splendor, (The Splendor of the Truth), 1993, taught us that our life should be about the quest for goodness. If we seek goodness, then we will find the treasure of joy. In this quest the Holy Father accentuates freedom and law. Freedom is a great gift to the human person which leads us to God if it is understood as our guidance. Law is a road map which brings us to God if it is understood as our guidance. Every life needs guidance and God encourages us to keep Him as our beacon. A happy death will come from a joyful life and joyful life will come from (1) appreciation of our precious worth by which God claims us, (2) knowledge of our redemption and responsibility, (3) the flourishing of goodness in our life.

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (b. 1090) became an extraordinary figure in the Church. Born into family wealth, he left if all behind and entered the Cistercian monastery at age twenty-three, bringing with him brothers, uncles, and friends. This zeal later led to his becoming a counselor to Church leaders, including the pope. As an ambassador of peace, he influenced the development of countless monasteries in France. A prolific spiritual writer and talented homilist, he inspires us with these words to the Cistercian community on the death of his brother. He relates his sadness first:

You, my sons, know how deep my sorrow is, how galling the wound it leaves (Sermon 26 on the Song of Sons, par.4) Then Bernard finds consolation:

You entrusted Gerard to us, you have claimed him back; you have taken what was yours. These tears prevent me from speaking further; impose a limit on them O Lord, bring them to an end (Ibid, par. 14).

A joyful life, which embraces suffering, will be consoled by the eternal glory which awaits all who are faithful to Christ.

SEVENFOLD OFFERTORY COMMITMENT

Thank you to all our parishioners to date who have renewed

or joined in SEVENFOLD to

support our parish. To those

who have yet to commit, we

need your participation this year

to make our Sevenfold program

a success.

We hope to elicit your SEVENFOLD participation

and support with your

yearly pledge to the weekly offertory

support of the parish.

Sevenfold allows the parish to help meet its operational expenses

and all its fiduciary responsibilities incumbent today.

All parishioners are asked to commit at this time and

we especially

invite our new families and parishioners who have not participated in

the past to consider

supporting their parish through Sevenfold

.

Consider choosing your donation to be given online (weekly,

monthly, quarterly, annually). We encourage you to go online

through WeShare, our automated and secure electronic banking

service.

You may return your Commitment Card to the rectory by mail,

drop-off or the Sunday Offertory Collections.

If you are in need of a red

SEVENFOLD packet

which contains all

materials and Commitment Card, you can find them available at the

ST. PAUL PARISH BABY SHOWER

Once again, we were

overwhelmed by the

generous response to

the Archdiocesan Baby

Shower held at St.

Paul’s recently. The large number of

items we received was a testimony

to the generous pro-life spirit that

exists in our parish. Again, the

participation of the members of the

religious education program this year

put the baby shower over the top.

The recipients of the gifts from these

baby showers, the mothers in crisis

pregnancies will be so grateful for

your help. Thank you!

Gratefully Appreciated

Thank you so much to Jean and Arthur Towne who volunteered in the

restoration of the chapel chairs and the case for our monstrance used

for Adoration and Benediction. Everything looks great!

Message from Our Music Director

Conventional wisdom has long held that

Sunday worshipers go home talking mainly

about two aspects about Mass, the homily

and the music, and I will add nobody goes

home whistling the homily.

I am always amazed at the amount of congregational

singing at all the Masses. It is truly a pleasure to accompany

such an active crowd.

I work hard to make sure that the musical selections reflect

and further bring to life the message of the days’ readings. I

enjoy all aspects of Liturgical and Devotional Music. There

is a difference. Liturgical pertains to what is suitable for the

Liturgy. Devotional is a genre of Sacred Music used outside

of the Mass.

I would like to invite all who are interested in knowing more

about our parish music ministry to see me after any Mass.

Every parishioner is invited to join our choir.

PREP Student’s Monthly Mass Next Weekend: Sunday, November 17 Our Grade 1-5 PREP classes will each participate in a special “grade” Mass during the 10:15 AM Mass where they will participate by singing in the choir, handing out bulletins, and bringing up the gifts. The Grade Mass this month will

be hosted by the 4th Grade PREP class. We look

forward to the children sharing in our celebration of the Mass.

Summary of Edge Class - Grades 6,7,8

This week at Edge, we began by playing a game of red light green light. In the teaching students learned that God can make a masterpiece out of anything and that the reality of His existence gives our lives meaning and purpose — but we also have to say “yes” and respond to God. Father Lawlor met with our Tuesday class and spoke to students about how much God loves them - as His most precious masterpiece. After the teaching, in small groups students had to come up with a word or picture that describes what they believe is their purpose in life on a yellow sticky note. You may want to try this chal-lenge for yourself - writing down your purpose on a sticky note. The Edge Night ended with everyone bringing forward their sticky notes and using them to create the word “purpose” at the front of the room, showing that they have a unique pur-pose that is also a part of a bigger picture of life.

Your child’s weekly challenge is to pick one person in their life who is a witness to God’s love and ask them about their faith in God.

Main Ideas

• When we live our lives using our intellect, will, and desires, we can know that God is real and that He loves us.

• Jesus came to save us from our sins and show us how we are to live in the fullness of how we were created.

• Jesus asks us to say “yes” to a relationship with Him. When we choose to believe and follow God, our lives radically change — we will have a purpose, hope, and the true happi-ness we desire.

Scripture Reference

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me’” (John 14:6).

Family Reflection Questions

• What was your favorite part of the Edge Night?

• What did you put on your sticky note that represented the purpose you see for your life?

• After everything you learned about God this semester, what would you say if someone asked you if you believe that God exists?

Several sticky notes reflected a life's purpose of making others happy. I reflected on that this week - reminding myself to remember that all of us need to have a purpose and use that for glorifying God in our daily walk. Make your sticky note and see if it changes your day!

Smart Strategy to Reduce 2019 Taxes by Year-End

Do the IRA charitable rollover: If you are over the age of 701/2 and have an IRA that you aren’t using for living expenses, there is a way to make your gift that may be even more beneficial to you after tax reform. That is to instruct your IRA administrator to make a direct transfer from your IRA to one or more charities. The amount you transfer (which cannot exceed $100,000) will count towards your mandatory distribution, and it will not be included in your taxable income. Because the amount transferred is not taxed as it would have been if the distribution were to you, this amount is equivalent to a charitable deduction. You receive this benefit even if you take the standard deduction.

A message from Wellspring House.... It’s time to go toy shopping!

We could always count on St. Paul’s to support the Wellspring Holiday Store and we’re counting on you again. We have over 800 local children who have been identified as “in need” of assis-tance this year. As you know, we open up the store for parents to shop in a loving environment for their children. Parents “purchase” the toys with their own money - $.25 for a small toy, $ .75 for a medium and $1.00 for a large toy - $2.00 total for each child. Our shoppers come into the store and are welcomed with a “personal shopper” volunteer who will take them through the vari-ous departments and help them find the perfect gift. While our guests are there, we serve them a meal and let them know about our FREE adult education and job training programs.

It’s really one of those magical weekends where people who usu-ally don’t spend time together connect in an extraordinary way. It’s a life-changing experience for both the volunteers and our guests.

The dates of our store this year are Saturday, December 7th and Sunday, December 8th. Just 4 weeks away!

There’s several ways you can help:

1. Shop for toys, *NEW this year: "Wish List" Purchase on Amazon and ship to Wellspring; visit wellspringhouse.org/ how-you-can-help/holiday-store/

2. Purchase gift cards (Kohls, Target, Visa or MasterCard), 3. Donate $ to purchase toys. We have some expert shop-pers watching for bargains! Checks payable to Wellspring House.

Your donations can be left in the Wellspring Receptacle in the church hall. All donations will be delivered to Wellspring on Friday, Dec. 6th.

4. Volunteer at the store by calling Lisa Robinson at Well-spring 978-281-3558 x 302: Volunteer opportunities include set-ting up the store Wednesday, December 4th, Thursday, December 5th, or Friday, December 6th. You can contribute by being a “personal shopper” on Saturday, December 7th or Sunday 8th. We also need people to set up, serve and clean in our kitchen on Sat-urday, December 7th and Sunday, December 8th. Call Lisa and she will provide you with all the information that will work for your schedule

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your continued sup-port of this magical gathering of people. It’s our favorite weekend of the year and we could not do it without you and your generous support.

“Warm Coats for Cold Weather” Coat Drive sponsored by

Masconomet Council 1232 Knights of Columbus Happening Now through November 30th

Lightly used and new coats are being collected by the

Knights of Columbus for kids and adults and will be distributed to families in need on Cape Ann and the North Shore in conjunction with Catholic Charities North. Nothing is more certain than the need for young children and families to bundle up against the winter’s cold. The “Warm Coats for Cold Weather” coat collection aims to provide warm clothing to those who need it most and can afford it least. That certainly applies to young children and adults as well. We know local residents will be generous as we approach winter’s chill and the holiday season. We urge as many who can to clean out their closets and contribute coats and winter weather gear. Thank you. Please place
