elcome back for another exciting year at the Advanced Technology Center. As we begin preparations to celebrate our 10th year of serving the citizens of Virginia Beach; the only things soaring higher than the crane that rises up behind me over our lake, are the dreams and expectations of our students.

As we ended last school year, our students soared to national and world-wide attention through their outstanding performances in competition, and as we start this new year our students and teachers continue to not only excel personally, but to also reach out to the local and world-wide communities. This focus on service is evidenced by our students exceeding their goal for contributing to the United Way, participation in the Mayflower Marathon Food Drive, refurbishing computers for needy families; and through their participation in a fund raiser designed to provide vaccinations for the children of Somalia.

We had an excellent turnout for our annual Open House and Planning Ahead Sessions on December 14th, with students and their parents from across the school division coming to see firsthand the outstanding facilities and programs offered at the ATC. To top the evening off, some of our lucky guests even won some free software donated by Microsoft. This was our only Open House this school year, and we’re greatly appreciative of the strong community support for the event.

If you are a current 9th, 10th, or 11th grader with a strong interest in our programs at the ATC, I encourage you to submit a completed application to your school counselor as soon as possible. Our early decision deadline this year is January 20, 2012, and

programs are filling fast. Applications have recently been mailed to the homes of high school students across Virginia Beach, and can also be picked

up from school guidance offices, or downloaded from our website at www.imagineinnovatecreate.com.

Our students and teachers remain focused as always on living our motto of “imagine-innovate-create”, and I encourage you to stay abreast of the goings on at the ATC, by friending us on our Advanced Technology Center - Official Site Facebook page, and by visiting our website at www.imagineinnovatecreate.com to learn more about the outstanding educational opportunities available at the ATC. We look forward to seeing, and/or hearing from you soon!

Sincerely, Michael D. Taylor Director [email protected]

On a beautiful autumn day during the second week of school, ATC Internet Web Professional students took a “field trip” to the campus of TCC to put their digital photography skills to the test. Students were given categories of subjects and asked to take photographs using the newly learned “rule of thirds”. The bird photo category gave them the most trouble as the construction of the new Student Center at TCC seems to have chased our flocks away. Since the day was beautiful, the class paused at the gazebo for a nice class photo.

Three Advanced Computer Network Administration students and their instructor, Linda Lavender, have become students – together at Tidewater Community College! As part of ongoing professional development training, Mrs. Lavender enrolled in the Network Fundamentals, Routers and Configuration course at TCC. Soon after, Shad C., Chris H. and Zach B. also decided this would be an excellent opportunity to sharpen their technical skills and they enrolled as well. Students spend each Tuesday afternoon practicing and reviewing their skills before class, and are providing input and lesson ideas to improve the networking concepts taught in the CNA I networking unit for future CNA students.

A+ Computer Repair ….Pays it Forward!

Ken ReiIly, Manager of the Suffolk Social Security office donated 35 computers, along with some monitors, keyboards, cabling and mice to the Advanced Technology Center’s A+ Computer Repair class on August 10, 2011.
