The University
The University of Koblenz-Landau is a young, mid-sized university. It was transformed from a teacher training college in 1990. Today, the university’s academic profile is distinguished by the Education Sciences, the Humanities, Studies of Culture, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Computer Science, Environ- mental Sciences and Psychology. This profile is the foundation for a diverse program of studies and opportunities for continuing education, as well as for scientific basic and applied research.
The increase in the number of students shows that the Campuses in Koblenz and Landau are attractive places to study. Since 1990, the number of students has tripled. In the meantime, 13,000 students are registered, half of whom are in Koblenz, and half in Landau. Compared to large universities, the lectures and studies occur on a smaller scale, which supports the communication among students and between students and faculty.
The university cities of Koblenz and Landau and their surrounding regions (Middle Rhine and Southern Palatinate) are also especially attractive.
In Koblenz, study and research take place at a modern campus near the Moselle River. The main campus in Landau is currently being thoroughly modernised and expanded.
The university actively promotes the further qualification of young academics. For this purpose an Interdisciplinary Graduate Centre was established. The ability to combine jobs or familial responsibilities, such as parenting or taking care of relatives, is also an important goal.
One particular characteristic of the university is its structure. Koblenz and Landau are the locations for teaching, research and further education. The organisational tie is the President’s Office in Mainz, home of the university executive and the central university administration.
