INTRODUCTION

Walt Disney World Orlando opened in 25th October 1971 with only one park, Magic Kingdom and 2 Resort Hotels. It is own by The Walt Disney Company and was built as to continue its success of Disneyland Anaheim, California. Today, Disneyworld has expanded to four major Disney theme parks, two water parks, six golf courses and the Downtown Disney dining/shopping/entertainment complex. Total visitation in the four Disney theme parks is more than 700 million guests per year.

Throughout the years, Disneyworld Orlando has done major expansion and reconstruction. By 1982, Walt Disney World Resort had doubled its investment with the addition of Epcot, Walt Disney World Village and six resorts. Attendance had passed 100 million visitors. While during the '80s it also added Disney-MGM Studios, its first luxury resort (Disney’s Grand Floridian Beach Resort), first moderate hotel (Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort) plus three other hotels, Pleasure Island, Typhoon Lagoon water park and greatly expanded live entertainment, recreation and at least 30 major Disney park adventures. In late 1990s, Disneyworld continue to expand with additions of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Blizzard Beach.

With the number of visitors approximately 50million per year, large size park and one of the oldest to be built, Disneyworld Orlando is one of the most well known Disney property in the world.

OVERVIEW OF COMMUNITY IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA

When Walt Disney World is being buid in Lake Buena Vista Orlando Florida, it was acceptable by people as it had been famous from the success of Disneyland in Anaheim California. Therefore, people and citizen of Orlando believe it would brought another success as this project would be greatest and big project ever in Orlando. Community positively allowed it in hoping it would give a lot of contribution towards community around there in term of the tourism growth, economic growth and job opportunities for community.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Florida had a population of 18,801,310. In terms of race and ethnicity, the state was:

 75.0% White American (57.9% Non-Hispanic White, 17.1% White Hispanic)  16.0% Black or African American

 0.4% American Indian and Alaska Native  2.4% Asian American

 0.1% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander  3.6% from Some Other Race

OVERVIEW OF THE PROPERTY

Disneyworld Orlando is one of the biggest and oldest Disney Theme Parks in the world with 4 major theme parks, 2 water parks, 22 themed resorts and other attractions. Located in Lake Buena Vista, just 30 minutes from the Orlando International Airport and 20 miles southwest of Orlando. The size is about 40 square miles (approximately the size of San Francisco, or twice the size of Manhattan). The big scale of the area as well as range of parks making it not enough to be visited only in one day.

Major Theme Parks:

o Magic Kingdom Park: A theme park with fairy tales theme. Suitable for all ages as it provides attractions for toddlers up until adult. The park is divided into 4 respected areas that connected with the main theme of Magic Kingdom, which are Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square, and Fantasyland that has just recently expanded and opened. The famous attractions in this park include Cinderella’s Castle, Space Mountain, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and Haunted Mansion.

o Epcot: A theme park with culture and architecture themes. The theme park has enchanting international pavilions and award-winning fireworks. There are 2 areas within the park itself, one is Future World which features technological innovations and World Showcase, which showing culture and cuisines of 11 countries; Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, The United States, Japan, Morocco, France, United Kingdom, and Canada; Famous attractions in this park include Mission: SPACE and The Seas with Nemo & Friends.

o Disney’s Hollywood Studios: As what the name stated, this theme park has a holywood’s golden age theme. There are many attractions based on the blockbuster movies. The park itself is divided into several areas, which are Hollywood Boulevard, Echo Lake, Sunset Boulevard, Streets of America, Commissary Lane, Pixar Place, Mickey Avenue and Animation Courtyard areas. Famous attractions in this park include The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

o Disney’s Animal Kingdom: The theme park with animal/ nature themes. There is a zoo with more than 1700 animals across 250 species, and the park is decidated to conservation of animals. There are 7 sections in this theme park, which are Oasis, Discovery Island, Camp Minnie-Mickey, Africa, Rafiki’s Planet Watch, Asia and Dinoland, as well as U.S.A Areas. The Famous attractions include DINOSAUR, Kali River Rapids, and Kilimanjaro Safaris. Water Parks:

o Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon: The water theme park in Disneyworld Orlando. Currently under renovation for future development. Snorkel with artificial sharks, stingrays, and tropical fish in coral reefs attractions are available. Besides providing water attractions such as giant wave pool, water slides and children’s playground, the water park also provides dining outlets and surfing learning programs for those who interested.

o Disney’s Blizzard Beach: A ski-resort themed that is melted into a water park, Disney’s Blizzard Beach provides white sands beach area and the slushy slopes of Mount Gushmore, which is one of the tallest and fastest waterslides in the world. The famous attractions including Chairlift, Summit Plumet, and Slush Gusher.

Other Disneyworld’s attractions:

o Downtown Disney Area: the shopping and entertainment area, which parking and admission is here. Located besides Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, Downtown Disney Area provides full entertainment and shopping paradise with the availability of many disney souvenirs and fashion shops, themed restaurants and cafes such as rainforest cafe, and much more places to visit such as Disney Marketplace and Disney Pleasure Island. Many celebrations and festivals also happened in Downtown Disney, such as Car Masters Weekend, Characters in Flight, St. Patrick’s Celebration, Festival of Masters, and Festival of Seasons.

o Disney’s Boardwalk: Inspired by early 20th century architecture, Disney’s Boardwalk is a quarter-mile promenade of exquisite dining, unique shops and exciting nightlife. Located along the edge of Lake Buena Vista, it also provides evening street performers, plenty of lounges and dining, as well as Surrey Bike for people to stroll around.

o ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex: The sport complex with 230 acres of professionally run, state-of-the-art facilities that often host over 60 sports and thousands of events for athletes of all ages and abilities. The teams of athletes also train in this area. The area provides the full scale of stadium, dining outlets such as ESPN Wide World of Sports Grill, and Playstation Pavilion, a place where you can play playstation as much as you can with admissions required.

RECRETIONAL ACTIVITIES, FACILITIES, AND ENTERTAINMENT Accommodation: There are more than 23 hotels owned and operated by the Walt Disney World Resort (includes 6 Disney Vacation Club properties at the resort) along all major theme parks and golf courses. The resorts list includes Disney’s Pop Century resort, Caribbean beach resort, Animal Kingdom lodge, Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, All-star Movies resort, Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel, Walt Disney World Swan hotel.

Attractions: ranging from children’s attraction to thriller and movie attractions, Disneyworld aim to satisfy all guests needs as they bring Disney characters into life. Cirque du soteil performances  La Nouba – Let’s party

Witness this international cast as they perform glorious feats of incredible strength and breathtaking beauty. The French phrase “la nouba” literally translates to “the party.” Acrobats, singers, trapeze artists, jugglers and clowns—more than 65 artists representing 15 countries—delight and mystify with daring acts of grace. A riot of color washes over every scene with the imaginative costumes, quixotic makeup and dynamic sets.

 Le Theatre

Located in the Downtown Disney Area, the strikingly designed theater was

constructed especially for Cirque du Soleil. Outside it resembles an enormous ivory

circus tent. Inside, an elaborate mechanical stage includes movable glass cages, platforms and inventive sets, with world-class sound and lighting systems that create a dreamlike metamorphosis from performance to performance.

There are no performances on Sundays or Mondays, or on certain dates stated on Disneyworld’s website

TARGET MARKET AND COMPETITORS

Disneyland Orlando targets specific of group which is more to families with their children. It can be seen from Disney themepark and concept where it brings fantasy of cartoon and animation movies created by Disney itself and it is being applied in the themepark. All the concepts is really cheerful and really like a fairytale. It brings back childhood memory even for adults that visit it. Besides can be seen from the themepark itself, the website also show a lot of picture of happy children picture in disneyland as well as family picture that having great time together in disneyland. Neighboring Disney World in Orlando, Florida is Universal Studios which is one of their competitors. Universal Orlando Resort and Sea World have opened to attract visitors from Walt Disney World. Universal, in particular, has tried to position itself as a more adult-like version of Walt Disney World, with two theme parks, a nightclub complex and three resorts. In fact, Universal’s marketing campaign pits “today’s hottest entertainment” against “yesterday’s classic fairytales” found at the Disney parks.

All of the Walt Disney World resorts have convenient complimentary bus services to the theme parks, water parks and Downtown Disney that also connect back to a Walt Disney World resort.

Last transportation available in Disneyworld is Monorail. Originally conceived as a public transport for the future, the Walt Disney World Monorail System has three separate beams that travel throughout Walt Disney World Resort. Below are the main stops of the monorail:

Additionally, there are express round-trip services to Epcot theme park and Magic Kingdom theme park that originate from the Transportation and Ticket Center.

DIVERSITY OF JOB EMPLOYMENT AND COMPETENCES

There are so many varieties of jobs in Disneyworld with estimated of 3,000 job roles available starting from resort/ hospitality personnel, attraction guards, Disney characters and so on. Below are the job descriptions of some of the employment.

Food and Beverages Host/Hostess: responsible for greeting Guests upon arrival, seating Guests in the dining room, creating and managing reservations within a computer system. Working as a Convention Guide, Food & Beverage Hosts and

Hostesses may work indoors and outdoors, and must be comfortable speaking in front of large groups.

Food and Beverages Waiters: Responsibilities include taking orders, operating a point-of-sale system (POS register), cash handling, fulfilling orders, food preparation, bussing, general cleaning, stocking items and keeping inventory.

Chefs: responsible for cooking food and signature dishes of Disney Resort and at the same time pay attention to HACCP and serve the best for the guests.

Lifeguard: responsibilities include ensuring the well-being of our Guests, keeping pool areas clean, answering Guest questions, enforcing policies, rules and regulations of Recreation locations, which needs strong observational skills and good physical condition.

Vacation Planner: The responsibilities include operating a computerized ticketing system, offering Guests information about multiple ticket variations, cash handling, balancing a personal fund and handling Guest situations. Strong communication and listening skills are also necessary.

Monorails operator: responsibilities including piloting monorail vehicles, loading and unloading vehicles, answering Guest questions and providing exceptional Guest service.

Costuming: responsible for issuing costumes at various wardrobe facilities across property, checking garments to maintain show quality, transporting locker bags, loading and unloading costumes and doing some light laundry. Costuming Cast Members also have the opportunity to assist performers in our shows and parades. This position requires working in warehouse environment. Physical demands include walking, standing, climbing tall ladders and working at heights.

Attractions guards: responsible for greeting guests, loading and unloading attractions, operating sophisticated ride systems, delivering narrations of varying lengths in front of large groups and providing audience control.

Bus Driver: responsibility includes driving multiple routes based on Guest demand, across the Walt Disney World Resort. It is also the important responsibility of Bus Drivers to conduct vehicle inspections and ensure the safety of our Guests and Cast Members.

Floral Designer: responsibility includes Basket Production and Floral Arrangements roles across the Walt Disney World Resort property.

Disneyworld is very selective to recruit employees, because they want employees that truly love Disney and would work with the company in full passion. Therefore, Disney Company also provides professional internships programs from students since high school, part time jobs opportunities and Disney training to ensure potential employees to become Disney personnel, especially for those who applied as character performers.

Disney Company also provides many benefits and rewards for employees to stay loyal, including lifetime insurance, vacation opportunities, realistic career ranks, and so on. 58,000 employees are employed by Walt Disney world as of 2006, spending more than $1.1 billion on payroll and $478 million in benefits each year and keep growing. This shows that Disneyworld has a lot of job opportunities, especially with the expansion of the parks that keep going from now.

TOURISM IMPACTS ON THE INTEGRATED RESORT

The impact of Disney’s operations in Central Florida and across the state includes: Jobs – Disney World Resort directly employs more than 62,000 cast members. Statewide, the total number of jobs created indirectly and directly by the operations of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts tops 160,000, which has given many local people in Orlando job opportunities.

Salaries – In Central Florida, cast members at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts earned a total of nearly $1.8 billion during 2009. Across Florida, when direct and indirect jobs are taken into account, more than $6 billion in paychecks can be attributed directly or indirectly to Disney’s operations.

Purchasing – Each year Walt Disney Parks and Resorts purchases more than $2 billion worth of goods and services. Nearly $1 billion is paid to vendors with a presence in the state and approximately $500 million goes to vendors in Central Florida. (local vendors)

Increase of country’s income from guests spending – Spending by Disney guests at businesses outside the resort area totaled nearly $1.7 billion in 2009. This includes hotel and lodging expenditures; meals at local restaurants; retail purchases; and transportation expenditures.

Increase in Government tax incomes – When taking the amount Disney pays in taxes and subtracting the cost of various government services used by guests and cast members, the net benefit to Florida and all localities is more than $400 million. In Central Florida, for example, Orange County sees a net benefit of more than $100 million and Osceola sees a net benefit of nearly $10 million.

Besides economic impacts, the existence of Disneyworld Florida has also given social impacts, including:

Investing in children’s needs – Disney World works closely with local children’s hospitals, Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida and Second Harvest Food Bank to provide necessities for a quality childhood. Disney cast members gave $3.35 million during the Heart of Florida United Way campaign to assist social service agencies in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties.

PROMISING OUTLOOK OF THE RESORT

Disneyworld resort is well known for its power and continuous development to match with all Disney characters and themes to satisfy guest needs from time to time. In 2013, they have begun the reconstruction of Seven Dwarfs Mine Coaster as well as Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon to upgrade and enhance the property. They also open Jingle Cruise, a Cruise attraction with Christmas theme that will open until the end of this year to celebrate Christmas season.

In 2016, Disneyworld plans to open Disney Spring, the multi-year transformation of Downtown Disney, and is expected to expand from 75 to more than 150 shopping, dining and entertainment venues, featuring some of the world’s most iconic brands and restaurants, with the vision of timeless and vibrant place that celebrates the turn-of-the century lakeside towns that dotted the Florida landscape.

While in 2017, Disneyworld plans to open Avatar Attraction in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park. The attraction will make the movie avatar comes to life with jungle of

bioluminescent plants, alive with light and sound, that guests will experience at night. Besides that, the floating mountains, night show with live music, floating lanterns, water screens and swirling animal imagery.

REFLECTIONS AND CONCLUSIONS

From all the research regarding Disneyworld Orlando, we can conclude that Disneyworld Orlando is one of the biggest trigger that makes Orlando success nowadays. Since it opened in 1971 and have many supports from the local community, Disneyworld Orlando has been continue to expand and brings many benefits to the local people in Florida, starting from job opportunities, salaries and incomes for local vendors, increase in national GDP as well as tax income, as well as social impacts such as improvement of infrastructure.

With the powerful brand name, the continuous expanding that will happen 2016 & 2017, as well as large number of visitors come every day, Disneyworld Florida seems very promising from the moment it opened to future. It has proven to even improve Orlando as a whole, meaning its success is inevitable. Disneyworld Orlando was actually built as the alternative of continuous success from Disneyland Anaheim. However, their rapid growing has proven that Disneyworld Orlando is not only an alternative as it’s a big successful theme park empire in Orlando.
