Setting Up the Best Guest Wireless Network
www.dxp.co.uk | [email protected] | (01942) 77 00 00
This is applicable for office-based businesses too with wireless technology providing outside associates, contractors and other visitors with a reliable internet connection. As well as this, it allows staff to hot-desk and stay connected whether they’re in meetings or on-the-go. There are a number of simple ways a business can set up Wi-Fi for guests. As experts in wireless deployment, the team at DXP offer guidance on how businesses can achieve this.
First Thing’s First
Before anything else, businesses should examine who
will be using the Wi-Fi, and how they will be using it. Ask questions such as how many people will be accessing the network at the same time and how long will they be connected. Establishing these answers will help to guide businesses to the right equipment and service package required to offer guests the most secure and reliable connection.
Existing Network
Letting people on an existing Wi-Fi network is usually the first thing that springs to mind for businesses, and it’s certainly the easiest way to go about it. However, it’s not secure. By allowing outsiders onto a private network, businesses are potentially opening
Wireless internet access for guests has come to be expected from businesses in recent years. This is most evident in the hospitality sector with 64% of hotels now offering free Wi-Fi and 94% of people citing Wi-Fi as the most important hotel amenity, according to Hotel Chatter.

SIP vs ISDN: What is the Best Solution for Your Business?
www.dxp.co.uk | [email protected] | (01942) 77 00 00
There’s an ongoing debate in the communications industry as to whether traditional ISDN lines will soon be obsolete in favour of more modern SIP trunking, where lines handle many signals simultaneously. In fact, the SIP market grew significantly in the second half of 2014, reaching 1,470,928 trunks by the end of the year, a growth of 20.01% since June 2014.

To paint a more detailed picture, Integrated Services for Digital Network (ISDN) is a traditional telephone network that transmits voice traffic only. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking is the use of Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) to provide systems over the internet instead of over traditional phone lines. It enables the implementation of unified communications so businesses can stay in touch using voice, video and text solutions. Our expert team at DXP explore the argument for SIP or ISDN to help businesses decide on the best solution for them.
Questions have been raised regarding the security of SIP and how vulnerable it is when it comes to hacking. With statistics revealing that SIP hacking is more common than credit card fraud, security is certainly a valid concern. A reputable communications partner would be able to offer frequent scans of SIP lines and alert the business to any unusual activity, but this may not be enough for some businesses making them more suited to an ISDN solution. SIP relies on an internet connection so there’s the added concern that, should the internet connection be lost, a business won’t be able to make or take calls.
The Pros of ISDN
The Big ISDN Switch Off
www.dxp.co.uk | [email protected] | (01942) 77 00 00
SIP provides a single connection for high-quality voice and data services, enabling the installation of unified communications (UC), which integrates real-time communication services over multiple devices. Although SIP has been around for over fifteen years, many businesses have continued to use ISDN. However, a greater number of companies are exploring the use of voice over IP (VoIP) and the benefits they can bring to a business. SIP is the standard protocol for VoIP use, as it enables voice systems to be
provided over the internet instead of over traditional telephone lines. Because of this, businesses will no longer need multiple systems for voice and data networks as they will have a single system that can support both. Not only does SIP provide a resilient foundation for UC installations, but it is an effective communications solution that can easily be deployed in less than an hour. Also, SIP is incredibly cost-effective as
For some time there has been debate within the communications industry over the benefits of using SIP in comparison to ISDN. This discussion has now intensified, with BT’s recent announcement that they will be switching off existing ISDN networks and migrating all customers to SIP by 2025.
So, what position does this big ISDN switch off leave businesses in?

Wireless Guest Access: Are you Breaking the Law?
www.dxp.co.uk | [email protected] | (01942) 77 00 00
Under data retention regulations, all public communications providers must retain data for a period of 12 months. Communications providers is an ambiguous term in itself, but this refers to anywhere providing Wi-Fi access, from coffee shops to hotels. Although this legislation has met objection, it has been cited as a requirement for combatting terrorism and allows police and security agencies to request data
from service providers. The type of information that providers must retain includes: • User ID • Date and time of log in and log off • The user’s IP address • The type of internet service used, such as HTTP,
POP, IMAP, SKYPE
Wireless guest access is an attractive option many businesses now offer their customers. But while it remains a popular solution, many companies are failing to recognise the legal implications involved within providing a guest wireless network. For many businesses, guest wireless law and protocol are a grey area. However, staying both secure and compliant should be key issues addressed when any guest Wi-Fi systems are introduced.

The Importance of a Wireless Survey
www.dxp.co.uk | [email protected] | (01942) 77 00 00
Some companies will offer a remote or predictive survey based on your building’s site plan, which helps establish how many access points would be required to provide optimum coverage. Undertaking this type of survey causes minimal disruption and has, in most cases, proved to be 90 per cent accurate in its findings. However, there are also drawbacks to a remote or predictive survey; there is no way of measuring the likelihood of interference, a common
problem for wireless networks. On top of this, a survey of this kind doesn’t take into consideration the number of concurrent users per access point which, again, can cause issues if an access point is pushed to its capacity. Often, it will also not consider the building’s materials and structures such as lift shafts, thick walls or concrete floors that would alter the absorption and reflection of wireless signals.
So, you have decided to implement a wireless network for your business. You have made contact with a wireless specialist and discussed your options, but what comes next?
