Welcome

I’m delighted that you’re considering undertaking your studies at the University of South Australia – your time at university will be the greatest intellectual adventure of your life.

It’s an exciting time to be joining us as we celebrate our 25th birthday. In those short 25 years we have become one of the world’s very best young universities – ranked by QS as number 25 on their list of the world’s best universities under 50, and number 35 on the THE Top 100 under 50 list. Excellence in Research Australia, the Australian government’s national research evaluation framework, has just evaluated the University of South Australia’s research and concluded that 97 per cent of our research is at World Class or above. The University of South Australia is the state’s largest university with around 32,500 students on our two city campuses, two suburban campuses and two regional campuses, including around 6,000 international students. Our programs are designed with strong professional emphasis and in partnership with industry and our graduate employment rates are the best in the State and are well above the national average. In fact, the Good Universities Guide for 2016 rates us as the top university in South Australia for getting a full-time job.

We are educating people for global careers and have been recognised for our international outlook by THE and QS. We also have some very powerful partnerships with global institutions such as Shandong, Tianjin and Beijing Normal Universities in China, Keio University in Japan, Trinity College in Dublin, University College in London and numerous collaborative efforts with universities elsewhere in Europe and North America. If you decide that the University of South Australia is the right place for you, we will do everything possible to set you on a path to the career of your choice, so that as a graduate, you can take your place as one of the new professionals driving national and international economies through your skills, capabilities and innovation potential.

I hope that you will consider joining us and I look forward to seeing you on campus soon.

Professor David G. Lloyd

Artistic ambition

With an ambition to work in the visual arts industry and the desire to pursue her passion, Lizzy decided to study the Bachelor of Visual Arts, specialising in art history and theory.

“I was interested in studying at UniSA as the School (of Art, Architecture and Design) has an illustrious history with many notable graduates.

“I have had a really positive experience with the teaching staff in my degree. I have felt supported to take risks and to think seriously about my career beyond the classroom setting. During my Honours year I undertook an internship as a Curatorial Intern at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, for the Arts in Health program. This experience allowed me to develop my skills and see myself as a professional. “I have enjoyed being challenged by my studies and it was so rewarding to have my hard work validated through receiving the University of South Australia Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement.” Lizzy Emery

Creative expression

Before commencing university Amber was unsure about what to pursue. Torn between art and social sciences, she discovered architecture as the perfect fit. “Studying architecture has allowed me to express my creativity while learning the technical fundamentals of design and construction. The teaching staff at UniSA have encouraged me, throughout my studies, to explore my interests and this has enabled me to develop my own style of design.

“The University also provides opportunities for hands-on learning. I travelled to Vanuatu to work collaboratively on designing tourist accommodation on Tanna Island. This experience opened my mind to the impact that built environment can have on a community. I saw first-hand how small architectural insertions can have great effect in changing the social dynamic.”

Innovative designs

Practical experience led Robert to design an award-winning medical training aid which is currently licensed to and produced by German company VBM Medizintechnik.

“Working on real-world projects for real clients, as part of my study, led to designing a medical training aid, together with another student, over an 18-month period. The product has won a number of awards including the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) SA Branch Gold Student award, DIA SA Branch Premier’s Award and has been a James Dyson Award National Finalist.

“The benefits of undertaking such projects is that they come with real research to do, users to survey, clients to please and constraints to design around – these sort of things just can’t be emulated.

“Studying at UniSA gave me the opportunity to work on what I enjoy alongside like-minded people. I worked on a wide range of interesting projects, learnt a host of useful skills and made a number of valuable contacts.”

An enticing challenge

Nathan discovered an interest in interior architecture theory while writing his Honours thesis. He wanted to explore the impact his ideas and research could have for both the teaching environment and his own studio practice.

“I enjoyed studying my undergraduate degree, and had established strong connections with the staff in the program. I was encouraged by their support and interest in my ideas, particularly as UniSA is the only university in the state to offer interior architecture. I was also enticed by the challenge of thinking at a PhD level!

“As my ideas are new and constantly evolving, I feel that the environment at UniSA, physically and academically, is the most aligned with my interests and needs as an emerging thinker in the field. Having the freedom and the dedicated time to broaden my knowledge and then find applications for those insights is very rewarding.”
