2012-2012 COUNCIL

THE INSTITUTE AND THE COUNCIL

The Institute of Chartered Accountants-Ghana was established by an Act of Parliament, Act 170 in 1963. It is the sole body charged with the regulation of the accountancy profession in Ghana. Its members are the only members recognized under the Companies Code (Act 179) 1963, for the purpose of audit of company accounts. It is governed by a Council of eleven (11) chartered accountants. The Council whose term of office is two years is headed by a president and a vice president.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COUNCIL

To conduct or provide for the conduct of qualifying examinations for membership of the Institute or for registration as a registered accountant under the Act and to prescribe or approve courses of study for such examinations;

To maintain and publish a register of chartered accountants and practising accountants; To secure the maintenance of professional standards among persons who are members of the Institute and to take such steps as may be necessary to acquaint such persons with the methods and practices necessary to maintain such standards;

To supervise and regulate the engagement, training and transfer of articled clerks; To maintain a library of books and periodicals relating to accountancy, and to encourage publication of such books;

To encourage research in the subject of accountancy and generally to secure the well-being and advancement of the accountancy profession; and

To specify the class of peoples who shall have the right to train articles clerks and to specify the circumstances in which any person of that class may be deprived of that right.

VOTING FOR YOUR PREFERRED CANDIDATES

UNTO COUNCIL

(2012-2014)

Introduction

The tenure of office of the 2010-2012 Council of the Institute ends with the close of the 2012 Annual General Meeting. In accordance with Section 7(2) of the Chartered Accountants Act 170, 1963, it is mandatory to elect 7 of our members to serve on the next Council.

Information about the candidates

The profiles of ten (10) candidates, contesting this year’s Council election have been provided in this brochure and grouped into three main categories, namely, members in practice, members in academia and members in business. These members have offered themselves voluntarily for election to serve on the Council.

Electoral Arrangements

1. The Process

Every member in good standing at the Annual General Meeting will be provided with: a. One (1) ballot paper.

b. On the ballot paper will be listed the names of the ten (10) Council nominees each of which will be detachable.

c. Each name will have a box in which members will be required to mark with either an X for an elected member or left blank for a non-elected member.

2. Requirements

a. Members are required to mark up to seven (7) names on the ballot paper. Any ballot paper with more than 7 names marked will be rejected.

b. Once members have completing their voting process, they will be required to fold the ballot paper in two and drop it in the ballot boxes to be provided.

3. Collation and announcement of Electoral Results

a. The Electoral Committee, led by Nana Prof. Ato Ghartey, a past president, will lead the counting of the ballot papers and announce the results of the election.

4. Candidates for Election

The candidates for this year’s election have been grouped in three categories, namely: a. Members in Practice
