Weekly Covid-19 Report

December 27, 2020 – January 2, 2021

Summary:

Public health surveillance data indicate Corona Virus Disease 2019 (Covid19) activity in Wayne County increased at a similar pace as the previous week. The cumulative number of cases were reported to the health department is 5,960 cases with 1,706 cases reported in the last 4 weeks. Most of the cases reported in the last 4 weeks are 20-69 years of age (76%) and percentage of cases is slightly higher among females (55%). The cumulative number of hospitalized cases is 320 with 39 admitted in the last 4 weeks. Most of the hospitalized cases admitted in the last 4 weeks are 60 years of age or older (85%). The cumulative number of Covid19 deaths among Wayne County residents is 154. Sixteen Wayne County residents have died from Covid19 in the last 4 weeks.

Percentage of Covid19 Cases by Sex:

During the last 4 weeks, the percentage of Wayne County cases is slightly higher among females (55%) than males (43%). This pattern is consistent with the percentage of cases by sex since the beginning of the pandemic.

Percentage of Covid19 Cases by Age Group:

During the last 4 weeks, the highest percentage of reported cases have been among individuals ages 20-69. This pattern is consistent with the age distribution of cases since the beginning of the pandemic. The percentage of cases among those ages 20-29 during the last 4 weeks is higher than the percentage of cases since the beginning of the pandemic (chart below).

Covid19 Cases by Race and Ethnicity:

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the highest number of reported cases are among White, non-Hispanics (4,166). Seventy-three cases have been identified as Black or African American, 47 cases have been identified as Hispanic, and 34 cases have been identified as Asian. Case rates are higher among Blacks (4,284 per 100,000) and White, non-Hispanics (3,826 per 100,000) compared Hispanics (2,042 per 100,000), and Asians (3,074 per 100,000) (data not shown).

Trends in Covid19 Cases by Zip Code (2 week intervals):

During the last 2 weeks, Since the beginning of the pandemic, the highest number of reported cases are from the Wooster (44691) zip code (339 cases) followed by residents of the Orrville (44667) zip code (115 cases) (map below). The highest case rates were found in Sterling (44276), Burbank (44214), Marshallville (44654), Doylestown (44230), and Orrville (44677) (data not shown).

During the last 4 weeks, 39 Wayne County cases have been hospitalized. 8 out of the 39 were admitted to an intensive care unit. The admission date is unknown for 18 hospitalized cases and excluded from the chart below.

During the last 4 weeks, a higher percentage of Wayne County hospitalized cases have been male. This pattern is consistent with the sex distribution of hospitalized cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

During the last 4 weeks, 85% of hospitalized cases among Wayne County residents are among those ages 60 or older. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 76% of hospitalized cases have been among those 60 or older.

Covid19 Hospitalizations by Race and Ethnicity:

Of the 320 hospitalized cases, 277 have been identified as White, non-Hispanic. Three have been identified as Black or African American, 2 hospitalized case has been identified as Asian and 1 has been identified as Hispanic. Hospitalization rates are higher among white, non-Hispanics (254 per 100,000) compared to Asians (181 per 100,000, African Americans (176 per 100,000) than Hispanics (43 per 100,000) (data not shown).

Covid19 Hospitalizations by Zip Code (Last 4 weeks)

During the last 4 weeks, the highest numbers of hospitalized cases came from the Wooster (44691) zip code (17). The highest hospitalization rates were in the Orrville (44667) and Creston (44217) zip codes.

During last 4 weeks, 81% of decedents were 70 years of age or older. This is similar to the age distribution of decedents since the beginning of the pandemic.

Covid19 Deaths by Race and Ethnicity:

133 out of the 154 deaths have been identified as white, non-Hispanic. One decedent has been identified as Asian.

Cumulative Covid19 Deaths by Zip Code:

92 out of the 154 deaths have occurred among residents of the 44691 zip code. 16 deaths have occurred among residents of the 44667 zip code, 13 deaths have occurred among residents of the 44230 zip code, and 12 deaths have occurred among residents of the 44618 zip code (map below).

Case Fatality Rates (CFR):

Case fatality rate (CFR) is the percentage of cases who die from a disease divided by the number of people who are diagnosed with the disease. The CFR is used to estimate disease severity. The overall Covid-19 CFR for cases reported to the Wayne County Health Department is 2.6%. CFR increases from 0% for cases ages 0-29 to 21.5% for cases ages 80 or older (chart below).

Long-Term Care Facility Residents and Health Care Professionals:

340 cases among residents of long-term care facilities have been reported to the health department. Of these cases, 27 have been hospitalized and 95 have died (chart below). The case fatality rate for residents of long-term care facilities is 24%. 372 cases among health care professionals providing direct patient care have reported to the health department. Of these cases, 12 have been hospitalized and 0 have died (chart below).

Data Sources:

1. Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS): Information on cases of communicable diseases reportable under Ohio Revised Code are housed and maintained by the Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS). Corona Virus Disease 2019 (Covid19) is a reportable condition under Ohio Revised Code. Health Care Providers are required to immediately notify their local public health department of Covid19 cases for follow-up. Cases with a classification status of confirmed or probable are included in this report. Confirmed cases are defined as patients that receive a positive laboratory test performed for Covid19. Probable cases must meet clinical criteria and epidemiologic evidence without confirmatory laboratory testing OR meet presumptive laboratory evidence and either clinical criteria or epidemiologic evidence.

2. Office of Vital Statistics: The Wayne County Health Department Office of Vital Statistics receives reports on the causes of death that occur within the county. Covid19 deaths were included in this report if they were listed as the immediate or underlying cause of death on the death certificate.

3. Definition of Recovered: The number of cases minus the number of deaths minus the number of cases with illness onset in the last 21 days. This does not take into account any new health problems recovered people may now have as a result of a Covid infection. 4. Definition of Active Cases: The cumulative number of cases reported to the health department minus the number of recovered cases

minus the cumulative number of cases who have died.

All data points listed in the report are preliminary. The data reflect the latest numbers on the date of the ODRS query. Data points are subject to change and updated each week.
