Religious Education and Sacramental Preparation
Please note that religious education is not the same as sacramental preparation. Every child (PreK to 12th
grade) should receive religious education each year (either through Sacred Heart School or through the parish’s religious education program on Wednesday nights).
By contrast, sacramental preparation supplements religious education for those students who will receive First Penance (normally in 2nd
grade), First Holy Communion (normally in 2nd
grade), and Confirmation (normally in 10th
grade). Sacramental preparation is also for children over the age of seven who are preparing for Baptism (RCIA adapted for children). Sacramental preparation takes place on select Sundays (10:15–11:15am for First Penance, First Holy Communion, and RCIA adapted for children; and 5:30–7:00pm for Confirmation). Therefore, every child should receive religious education each year; some years, the child will receive sacramental preparation as an additional program. —Fr. Tony
Interested in Becoming Catholic? Missing Sacraments?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) will begin soon. This is the process whereby adults, and children over the age of reason (seven), prepare to receive the Sacraments of Christian Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. There are various categories within the RCIA: (1) unbaptized persons who receive all three sacraments; (2) persons baptized in another Christian denomination who become Catholic, and who thus receive Confirmation and the Eucharist; and (3) baptized Catholics who were never catechized (i.e., educated in the faith), who likewise
receive Confirmation and the Eucharist.
The RCIA has both an educational and a spiritual component, which seek to lead participants to a deeper relationship with Christ. RCIA for adults will meet on Tuesdays from 6:00 to 7:00pm in the conference room. These classes are also open to anyone who wants to learn more about the Catholic faith. The first RCIA meeting for adults will be an informal “inquiry” session, during which participants may ask any question they like. The inquiry meeting will take place on September 23 from 6:00 to 7:00pm.
RCIA adapted for children meets approximately one Sunday a month, beginning on September 21, from 10:15 to 11:15am, in the youth room. (Children in RCIA also attend regular religious education: either the parish school, or religious education on Wednesdays, from 6:00 to 7:30pm.

Altar Guild
There will be a workshop for all those persons interested in the Altar Guild. Members of the guild wash the linens (purificators, altar clothes, etc.) which are used during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Please contact Elaine Taylor or Marie-Claire D’Arcy at (434) 792 9456 if you are interested in volunteering for this important ministry.
2014 Annual Diocesan Appeal: Our Faith Alive in Love During the week of September 8th
, many of you will receive a letter from Bishop DiLorenzo asking for your support of the 2014 Annual Diocesan Appeal. It is our sincere hope that you will answer our Bishop’s request and make a generous pledge to this effort.
Nineteen ministries and programs are supported by the 2014 Appeal including supporting the local needs of our parish. Every year the Annual Appeal returns to the each parish a portion of the funds collected. Over the past four Appeals, the Diocese has returned nearly $4.4 million to the parishes. This year, the funds returned to our parish will be used to continue to offset shortfalls in our parish operating budget. All pledges can be paid in ten monthly installments which makes it easy to support the important ministries of our Diocesan Church while also supporting our parish needs. Thank you in advance for your partnership in the 2014 Appeal.
Evening of Reflection
An Evening Reflection on the Holy Eucharist will take place on Wednesday, September 17 from 5:30 to 7:30pm. A free spaghetti dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:15pm; instruction according to age (children, youth, adults) will take place from 6:15 to 7:00pm; and the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for Adoration from 7:00 to 7:30pm. Father Kevin Segerblom, the pastor of Saint Anne parish in Bristol, will be the guest speaker.
Deadline for Sacramental Preparation
The deadline for signing up for all sacramental preparation is Wednesday, October 1. This includes First Penance / First Holy Communion (whether the child is in 2nd
grade or a higher grade), Confirmation (normally 10th
grade), and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) adapted for children (for unbaptized children ages seven and above). If a child or young person has not been enrolled by the deadline, the reception of the sacraments will be postponed until next year. Please remember that any child or young person preparing to receive sacraments must be concurrently enrolled in religious education.
Parish E-mail List
The parish office notifies parishioners about funeral arrangements, and reminds them about upcoming events, through an e-mail list. If you would like to be added to the list, please contact Amanda Esparza (shc_sec@comcast.net).

THE LORICA OF ST. PATRICK
I arise today, through God’s strength to pilot me: against snares of devils, against temptations of vices, against inclinations of nature. Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ in breadth, Christ in length, Christ in height, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.
Traditionally, a lorica is a prayer for protection. In Latin, lorica meant armor or breastplate. Knights would place inscriptions or prayers on their shields or armor to recite before going into battle.
*This is an abbreviated version of this powerful prayer. It’s an ideal morning prayer.
