2014 Mall Show is Cutting Edge

The scene was dominated by Orv's giant military transport in blue and white. Nearby were huge models of bi-planes and classic racers.

Filling the space in between was a cross section of the Age of flight.

Acrobatic planes, Cubs, Cessnas, single engine, multi engine, were only a few of the examples of flying machines represented.

Helicopters and a new type of rotary wing aircraft, the Quadra-copter, (with four ro-tors), also appeared in this years show.

An example of this type of aircraft outfitted with a camera that transmitted it's images back to the ground via a high fre-quency radio link was on display.

The camera was pointed out into the mall area and one could see them-selves on the adjacent computer screen.

First Person View, (FPV), is a new dimension in RC. An entire system using an RC plane was displayed along with explanatory cards showing all of the components of this new concept.

This demo had a headpiece so that the operator could see what the airplane sees as it flies about.

The variety of aircraft was exten-sive.

G

reeting the mall visitor as they strolled through

the atrium of the mall, were splendid replicas of

a wide variety of modern and classic aircraft.

If it flies, it was probably in the mix..

One of the features of our mall show is the interaction with the specta-tors. People can ask questions of our members on almost anything aerody-namic as they peruse the models.

Even the little urchins can get into the act. A large number of tiny gliders constructed from plastic plates were given out to the young ones as they stopped by with their parents.

W

ith the first snows of December, the long cold night of 2014 descended upon Western New York. All those days of summer flying were distant memories.

Just when we needed a lift, along comes our Chinese Auction.

Annual

Chinese Auction

The Chinese Auction is a great way to get rid of some of the items that you no longer want or need, while giv-ing others a great opportunity to get some obscure item that they thought they had always wanted.

The Chinese auction was origi-nally instituted to provide funding for improvements to our flying fields.

With nearly sixty spectacular items up for grabs, an exciting array of model paraphernalia awaited the eager bidders.

One could actually feel the anticipation as the meeting ended and the drawings got under way.

John Scarantino and Bob Waldraff drew out the winning bids as they progressed along the tables.

One of the significant benefits of the mall show venue is the impact it makes on visitors.

Many times an event like the mall show results in a new member seeking to satisfy his interest in aviation. Occasionally in the past, a variety of conflicts have arisen over noise and flying activities. Much of this was due to the fact that folks knew very little about organizations like the knights.

Due to public events like our rally and the mall shows, people were able to learn about modeling and many of these conflicting situations diminished.

Knowing more about organiza-tions like the knights, provided

other community groups such as scouts and youth groups to request demonstra-tions for their members.

Providing young people with ac-tivities is an excellent contribution to our community.

n Super Bowl Sunday, our neighboring mod-eling club, the RC Aircrafters host a unique event.

Known for random Sunday foodfests, these hardy souls defy the WNY winter weather by get-ting together a great feast and throwing in some fearsome flying.

Always, a cold and blustery scenario, it never fazes the more adventurous of fliers.

About two dozen dedicated fliers brought combat models with the serious intent of destroying any other angry birds that might show up.

As many as five of these motor-ized missiles wheeled about simulta-neously in the air until one remained with its ribbon intact.

Of course the more sane fliers came out as well and there was a fine showing of helicopters and pattern aircraft.

The wind was mild and the time was used well.

Of course if the truth were to be known, all these eager fliers really came out for the food that was being prepared by club prez Andy Brose and his cadre of chefs.

Dishes to pass were brought in to complement the burgers.

It was a fun event and despite the cold everyone enjoyed this break in the winter doldrums.

Obituary

I would like to take a mo-ment and thank everyone for attending this year’s Mall show.

We had a very impressive display. All of you put a lot of work into your mod-els and displays, and it shows.

Hopefully spring will decide to show itself, and we can get back to flying outside.

With that being said, our next events on the calendar are the work parties for the North Collins and Emerling field.

I ask everyone who has the ability and time, to please join in. Every spring there is basic maintenance that needs to be completed at our fields.

Your help is needed and appre-ciated.

Also, keep an eye out for the May issue of the AMA magazine.

That is when the AMA is sched-uled to announce, the winners of the 2014 Flying Field Grant.

We have the potential to receive almost $500 from the AMA for the work that was completed at the Emer-ling Field.

I’ve been told that this year there are many clubs applying for money, so keep your fingers crossed. That grant could help us do even more work to our fields. See you at the next Meet-ing!
