Catalog Description

This course intends to show how Christian virtue arises materially from the theological/doctrinal convictions of the Christian faith. This course will show how philosophical ethics has helped to define theological ethics, but it will also show that the Christian virtues are more fully

understood and practiced in light of the faith claims of the Church. Therefore, this course will argue that Christian doctrine and Christian virtue need to be understood together in Christian ethics. This course will assist in learning how to ‘formulate’ and ‘implement’ ethical norms within the Christian faith. This course will show how the Church has and should engage major moral/ethical concerns within the context of its witness of faith in the world and will explore a range of possible issues such as human sexuality, bioethics, justice, and war. This course should not be taken before the second year of the student’s seminary studies unless the professor gives permission.

Course Narrative & Rationale

At the intersection between academics and the concrete relationship with neighbors is ethics. Christianity arises in a world that is already morally complicated, with Hebrew and Greek influences already present. Christianity arises not as a moral system but as a narrative, as the story of the Triune God. This has left Christians, over the centuries, looking for ways to move from the stories and doctrines of Christian theology to the difficult choices required of Christians in new times and cultural situations. This course attends to this ambiguous but vital relationship

between theology and ethical practice. We first review the destabilizing nature of Christian responsibility, and then turn to the theories and concepts that contribute to the way Christians have made choices between competing responsibilities. The course will review some of the major challenges to Western approaches to ethics, and then turn to wrestle with more of the critical moral issues of our time, including reproductive ethics, human sexuality, war and terrorism, economic injustice and a host of other issues. Students will have the opportunity to shape some of these discussions to address the particular issues of morality that are pertinent in their cultural, familial, geographical and theological contexts.

1. The development of wisdom and discernment through engagement with the intellectual challenge of the literature of the Christian faith, by the critical, scholarly study of the history and theology of Christianity, and of the literature and practices of Christian spirituality, ethics and ministry.

2. The growth of mature self-awareness and self-understanding as flawed human beings, reconciled to God and to each other within the Christian community, who are being transformed into the perfect likeness of Christ, filled with his Spirit, and gifted for the service of humanity.

3. The investigation of human society, thought and culture in order to articulate clear and coherent views of the context of the mission of the Church, and to develop an

understanding of the Church as the community of faith with a passion for the gospel engaging in mission to different cultures.

Upon successful completion of the course students will have (portion of the course that achieves these outcomes indicated in parenthesis):

Course Requirements

1. Two Reading Journals (50 points each; 100 points total) (Course Outcomes 1 and 3)

Since this is a reading and discussion course it is absolutely essential that students arrive at class each day having read the material and prepared for class discussion. Students will be required to keep a “reading journal” in which thoughts and questions about the various

reading assignments are recorded. These journal entries should be carefully written and clear, though they are not considered “refined prose” and will be evaluated primarily for content and not for grammar/spelling/structure. In most cases, full points will be awarded to journal entries that make sincere attempts to address the material. The journal will be divided into two parts. Students will upload journals on January 18 and January 24 (after the completion of the module).

For each assigned reading in the syllabus, students should provide a distinct journal entry that includes:

a) Confirm that you completed the assigned reading, or list the percentage completed by the conclusion of that reading period.

b) Several distinct ideas or thoughts inspired by the texts, or their intersection with ideas you have from life or other courses. Be sure to provide quotes and references in your journals; these may be helpful when you write your reflection papers.

c) These are not meant to add significant time to your reading. These are not graded for writing quality or clarity. These journals are simply a manner of confirming that students are performing a careful reading of the assigned texts.

Sample Reading Report

100% of the reading assignment completed:

1. The editors quote Descartes wondering why more rigorous philosophical systems have not been built on the steadiness of mathematical certainty (2 + 2 = 4, etc.) (Modern Philosophy, p. 9). What is the significance of the fact that Descartes is founding “modern philosophy” with such abundant confidence in the helpfulness of math to guide philosophy?

2. Descartes seems to be arguing that his “Meditations on First Philosophy” is justified because it might help unbelievers come to faith in God (MP, 13-14). How does this square with the “doubt everything” paradigm that follows? This feels a little like he’s trying to get the “protection” he needs from the theology faculty in Paris by making them believe he is doing the church an evangelical service.

3. It seems like every one of these meditations interacts heavily with the idea of God, and

where/how the human mind arrives at the concept of God. It seems like Descartes is either doing or battling theology.

4. What does Descartes mean by the word “nature”? For instance, when he says, “nature has taught me this” (MP, 29) - is he considering himself separate from “nature”?

5. The notion of the soul seems arbitrary here. Would Descartes need the concept of “soul” if he didn’t feel pressured by the church to use that language?

2. Reflection Paper: Christian Responsibility (100 points, due January 11, 5:00 p.m.)

(Course Outcomes 1-4)

Write a five-page (1500 word minimum) reflection on Eric Severson’s Scandalous Obligation (12pt, double space, 1” margin, conformed to Turabian). Reflect on some theme within the book that you find stimulating or helpful (or stimulatingly unhelpful) with regard to Christian ethics and Christian responsibility. This is a formal academic paper and should be written carefully. Significant grading deductions will be incurred for spelling/grammar errors, improper documentation (beware of relying on treacherous internet sources) and late work (deductions of 1 letter grade per 24 hours late).

Your paper should in some way deal with the extent and parameters of Christian responsibility, but it should not attempt to evaluate the whole book or the entirety of Christian obligation. The key to this assignment is the selection of a narrow, clearly defined thesis. Avoid general assessments of the book, using this reflection paper to reveal your careful engagement of a narrow slice of the arguments made by Severson.

3. Final Project (200 points, due February 15, 5:00 p.m.) (Course Outcomes 1-4) Students will be required to prepare a research project exploring some contemporary

ethical issue. All topics must be approved by the professor, either by email or through personal consultation. This is portion of the course is the final and cumulative assignment, and students are not expected to research and prepare this project until the post-modular portion of the course. If time and scheduling allow, there may be extra credit available to students who select options a, b or c below and present their project to the class during the modular period.

a. Recorded lecture presentation: students can prepare a presentation, with or without

slides, that summarizes various approaches to the topic. Be sure your presentation includes evidence of philosophical foundations for ethical positions. Presentations should also demonstrate examples from current events and contemporary controversies. The student is responsible to deliver the recorded lecture to the professor in an approved file format (see professor for available options). A formal, annotated bibliography should be submitted with the presentation, with annotations describing the manner in which each source was consulted in the project. Extra credit may be available to students who prepare this project

b. Video presentation: students can prepare a video presentation, or documentary, that

includes interviews, research and footage to help introduce this topic. Video

presentations should include the same content as lecture presentations (above), but they can utilize multimedia and external experts to express some of the opinions and

arguments. Students utilizing this option may work in teams of two, with both students receiving the same grade on the project overall. See the professor for further guidance and details on this option. A formal, annotated bibliography should be submitted with the presentation, with annotations describing the manner in which each source was consulted in the project.

c. Recorded or Live Debate: working in a team of two, students can organize and

perform a formal debate on a major contemporary ethical issue. Students will take opposing positions in the debate, though it is not important that the students agree with the positions they are arguing in the debate. The debate can either be performed in class or recorded and submitted to the professor in video format (see professor for details). Students choosing this option will be graded on the quality of their depiction of various arguments in the debate, as well as the research and examples provided. A formal,

annotated bibliography should be submitted with the presentation, with annotations describing the manner in which each source was consulted in the project.

d. Standard Research Paper: Students may select a single moral tension that will be the

focus of research, writing and presentation. The topic must be approved by the professor. The student will become an expert on the current research and debates surrounding this particular topic, as well as the way ethical theory relates to the issue. Students will prepare a formal research paper of at least 2,500 words (12pt, double space, 1” margin, conformed to Turabian) reflecting on some contemporary ethical tension or issue. Students should avoid generic term paper topics (i.e. “Abortion: Pros and Cons”) and strive to write a paper that explores the issue with significant creativity and depth (i.e. The Ethics of Clothing: Where Target Gets Its Threads). Significant grading deductions will be incurred for spelling/grammar errors, improper

documentation (beware of relying on treacherous internet sources) and late work

(deductions of 1 letter grade per 24 hours late). Standard research papers will be graded according to the following rubric:

- Grammar, spelling, sentence structure, readability, consistency of notations/spacing/pagination (20 points)

- Quality of research, accuracy of citations, connection of thesis to the scholarly field, use of primary sources (20 points)

- Logical connectedness of the paragraphs/points, visibility of a structure/outline, transitions between points/paragraphs (20 points)

- Thesis development, quality of argument, appropriate length/word count (20 points) - Strength of conclusions, scope of argument (whether or not the paper accounts for the

range of opinions on the topic), overall presentation of thesis (20 points) - Total Points: 100

4. Participation and Attendance (150 points, pre-module and module)1 (Course

Outcomes 1-4)

Attendance is absolutely critical in this course – each segment of the course will build on the previous concepts making it impossible to follow the progression without good attendance. After one absence, any further unexcused absences (anything not related to 1. serious,

documented illness, 2. death in the immediate family) will lower a student’s overall grade by 50 points (10% of overall grade) per absence. Contact the instructor (phone or email) prior to any planned absences and within 24 hours of illness-related absences.

During the module, students will be awarded points for alert presence in class,

contributing to dialogue and demonstrating adequate preparation for the daily discussion. Some students are more inclined to share their thoughts than others. The key to full credit on this course requirement is active engagement, which is evidenced by timeliness, awareness of classmates and their needs, preparation for class, and constructive participation in discussion. During the pre-modular period student participation will be gauged on timely participation in the online forums where some discussions will take place in the weeks preceding the module.

An important note about laptop and phone use: Under no circumstances should students send and receive calls, or instant/text messages in class. Laptop computers have a detrimental impact on classroom discussion, even when they are used appropriately. Since this course

emphasizes discussion and dialogue, computers are strongly discouraged in the classroom. If a student wishes to utilize a laptop in class she/he must sign a contract indicating that the wireless receiving on the laptop will be disabled during class, and that the computer will be used for note-taking only. Each violation of this policy (accessing the internet, email, e-books, documents, etc.) will result in a 25-point deduction in the course grade (5% of the overall grade).

Method for Submitting Assignments

All assignments will be submitted through the Moodle course website.

They also should contact the instructor no later than the end of the first class session to discuss learning needs and adaptive strategies that have been beneficial for the student in the past.

Policy Regarding Late Work & Missed Exams

Papers will lose 10% possible value for every day they are late. Extensions will be denied except for reasons involving severe illness or a death in the family. No papers will be graded that are more than 5 days late. If a student misses an exam, it cannot be made up unless the absence is due to severe illness or a death in the family. Make-up exams should be scheduled immediately.

Grades: A (460-500), A- (450-459), B+ (440-449), B (410-439), B- (400-409), C+ (390-399), C (360-389), C- (350-359), D (300-349), F (0-299).

Audio and Video Recordings

In order to foster a safe learning environment in which various viewpoints are respected, audio or video recordings or transcripts thereof by students is prohibited without the permission of the faculty member in charge of the course. If permission is granted, redistribution of these recordings or transcripts thereof outside the scope of the course is prohibited.

Students enrolling in videoconferencing courses or participating in certain synchronous Moodle activities should be aware that their images and voices will be transmitted digitally through the videoconferencing equipment and may be recorded. Continued enrollment in these courses constitutes willingness to participate in the class with these conditions. If you have privacy concerns, please discuss your enrollment with the Registrar.
