DSC 2015 Conference - Driving Simulators Symposium
16-18 SEPTEMBER 2015, TÜBINGEN (GERMANY) - 17 SEPTEMBER 2015
“The development of simulators market and technology has produced a variety of solutions, ranging from highly customized and tuned machines to multi-purpose platforms.
Yet, do we really know which solution is best for the intended simulator usage? [...] What are the trends in simulator use, design and architecture?
[...]First of its kind, this symposium is the ideal settings for a fair comparison of the variety of solutions available today.” The DSC 2015 Europe Organizing Committee

EXAMPLE 1: LIMITATIONS OF DESKTOP
SIMULATORS FOR VEHICLE
DYNAMICS
IIn Desktop Simulators for Vehicle Dynamics , a Driver Model is employed for generation of realistic driver controls in relation to the task requested (i.e. maneuver)
Motorsport Application: Perfect race car setup for desktop simulation!!! ÆToo sharp and unstable for the real driver
Poor modeling of the driver-race car combination mainly due to:
1. Poor modeling of ddriver interaction with the vehicle i.e. drive model
2. Poor modeling of tyre behavior in actual operating conditions i.e. tyre model धINTRO to Human in the Loop Simulation

EXAMPLE 2: LIMITATIONS OF TRADITIONAL DEVELOPMENT PATH FOR
HUMAN-MACHINE INTERFACE (HMI)
D
Due to the rising amount of information made available by the vehicle, the road and other
infrastructures, a significant effort is made by car manufacturers in order to deliver to the driver the largest part of this information
Perfect HMI Design!!! The system delivers constantly all available information to the driver Æ When above HMI design is then tested with a real driver, the system is judged as annoying
and disturbing the driver while executing his/her tasks धINTRO to Human in the Loop Simulation

Added Value of HIL Simulation
ÆPossibility to verify how the system is perceived by the real driver
Driver perception is only useful if the driver is immersed in a realistic simulation
(i.e. enough realistic to deliver useful information with respect to the correspondent “interaction experience” in the real word)
Problem of managing available visual/audio/motion resources in order to achieve realistic
simulation for the desired “interaction experience”

BHAITECH SIMULATOR - STRENGHTS
“Motion Control” Flexibility• In-house development of the entire control chain for simulator motion:
vehicle model/cueing algorithm/low level hardware control
Æ possibility to use/bias non-uniformly simulator motion resources according to the job
required
“Interfacing” Capabilities
• Machine hardware/software architecture developed for easy and quick interface with any
“external” vehicle component in the form of both software or hardware in the loop
• Projection System and Simulator Screen not installed on the Stewart Platform
Æ possibility to switch quickly from one vehicle cockpit to another ध%KDL7HFK7HFKQRORJ\Simulator - Strenghts

BHAITECH SIMULATOR – STRENGHTS
Limited Machine Dimensions• The simulator suits well investigations in the medium/high frequency range
Æ e.g. vehicle ride studies
ध%KDL7HFK7HFKQRORJ\Simulator – Strenghts & Weaknesses
BHAITECH SIMULATOR - WEAKNESSES
Limited motion amplitude due to limited travel of platform actuators
Æ careful use of machine motion resources in order to achieve a realistic interaction experience for the analysis under development

BHAITECH SIMULATOR – CHALLENGES AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
Appropriate use of simulator motion resources to achieve a satisfactory trade-off between the primary and secondary interaction aspects still one of the main objects of research and
development.
Æ partially achieved as a result of a significant development effort but still on-going.
Not only a matter of motion control!
Æ simulator architecture inevitably suits better some applications/investigations and worse some other.
