MDM& DATA
GOVERNANCE
NEW YORK 2013
October 20-22, 2013
FROM THE CHAIR
You’d be hard-pressed this year to locate a senior executive at a large, public company who hasn’t stood in front of her
employees, customers or shareholders to pronounce that corporate master data is a critical asset that must be nurtured and
protected.
The trending topic de jure for boardrooms is Big Data and its brethren Big Data Analytics. Sound familiar? Clearly, MDM and
Big Data are co-dependent. The fact is, without consistent master data, an enterprise can’t discern and measure “who” is
tweeting/blogging/friending about “what” product or service.
And
both MDM and Big Data business strategies mandate a healthy dose of Data Governance to be cost effective,
measurable and sustainable.
Mega trends such as Mobile, Social, Cloud and Real-Time Information are playing a key role in enhancing business value as
enterprises transform themselves to meet the reality of MDM-enabled Big Data analytics. These trends have considerably
stressed the capabilities of contemporary MDM solutions.
Our 8th annual MDM & Data Governance Summit in New York City represents a comprehensive yet compact means to get
your “MDM update”— whether embarking upon your fi st such initiative, fi ne-tuning an existing MDM program, or planning for
the next phase.
I look forward to meeting with you and your team in Manhattan this October as we mutually update our MDM and Data
Governance credentials at the world’s largest gathering of IT professionals dedicated to these two vital business initiatives.

MASTER DATA MANAGEMENT 3.0
Sriraj Rajaram, EDM Practice Lead – Americas, Cognizant Technology Solutions Naveen Sharma, Practice Lead, Master Data Management, Cognizant
Technology Solutions
In this session, learn how the emerging and disruptive infl uences of Social Media, Mobility, Analytics and Cloud (SMAC) are reshaping our businesses. Cognizant Technology Solutions has been highlighted as an innovator with deep understanding of and vision for developing best-in-class customer data solutions—especially those that address big data analytics, mobility and social networks. The MDM leadership team of Cognizant have more than a hundred MDM implementations to draw upon and will share their perspective on how MDM 3.0—a new data management approach to MDM—is helping their client organizations adapt to this evolving landscape. Key highlights of the session include
• Addressing the key challenges faced during MDM implementation
• Understanding how the SMAC stack is infl uencing the enterprise
• Introducing the Data GRiD as a part of the 3-dimensional approach to managing enterprise data
MDM ON HADOOP: GOOD FOR “TRADITIONAL MDM” AND “BIG DATA MDM”
Dr. Arka Mukherjee, CEO and Founder, Global IDs Inc.
The Hadoop platform offers enterprises the opportunity to evolve their approach to MDM. By offering both data distribution and parallel computing, traditional MDM activities can be performed more effi ciently at a signifi cantly lower cost. Due to the super-sized signal-to-noise ratios, master data entity resolution is a key issue in deciphering useful information from Big Data. Additionally, Hadoop offers both economics and scaling to overcome such challenges to Big Data analytics that are increasingly arising in “Big Data MDM.” This presentation describes how various MDM activities (metadata, profi ling, quality, integration and analytics) can be done on Hadoop. This session will include a case study that provides these insights regarding MDM on Hadoop:
• Applying data profi ling and identity resolution to customer entities in Big Data
• Tackling large scale batch data de-duplication when traditional data management fails
• Aggregating and correlating customer and product fragments into more complete entities to render cost-effective and accurate social media analysis
THE EVOLUTION OF DATA MANAGEMENT: THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME
Tony Fisher, General Manager, SAS
The data environment is changing rapidly. Hardware is cheaper and faster. Data volume and speed—as well as the number of sources—have skyrocketed. Organizations are required to manage at the enterprise level and reach out to communities of partners, customers and employees. All of these issues can be directly felt in the data management needs of today. Yet the tried and true fundamentals of data management are just as important now as they have ever been—if not more so. Big data, master data management (MDM), cloud applications and other practices have changed. But our tasks as data management professionals have not. If we don’t learn from past mistakes, we are destined to repeat them.
• Assessing the evolution of data management technologies
• Focusing on the key data management needs and issues of today
• Applying best practices in MDM and Data Governance to help organizations make the most of their data
LESSONS LEARNED FROM A GLOBAL MDM IMPLEMENTATION
Tina Rosario, Vice President, Global Data Management, SAP
In 2010, the SAP COO sponsored an information governance program to address data consistency via standards, KPIs and processes. While the implementation was a series of phased projects to demonstrate business value and gain support, the scope was global and across lines of business. The goal was to solve root causes—not just symptoms—by creating capabilities that deliver high quality master data reliably, timely and effi ciently. In 2013, the SAP information governance program won the TDWI Best Practices Award for Organization Structure, and the Nucleus Research Technology ROI Award. This session will review lessons learned in the following areas;
• Setting up a Data Governance organization
• Connecting the global data strategy to business goals and initiatives
• Defi ning metrics and connecting them to business value
