1 General

By letter dated 12 December 2012, MA 39 was assigned by the client to perform fire-resistance testing of formwork tie-rod systems.

Following the placement of the assignment, an arrangement was made with MA 39 concerning the construction to be tested (selection of the test object).

2 Test conditions

The test method for determining the fire resistance duration is laid down by ÖNORM EN 1363-1, which states that the test object is to be exposed to temperatures of the unit temperature-time curve.

In the current case, the assessment is made on the basis of the maximum temperatures reached on the surface of the test object facing away from the fire.

3. Test objects

The test objects were provided by the client and installed in the aperture of the test furnace on 4 April 2013.

The following formwork tie-rod systems were installed for the test:

2x: - Oktagon PLUS with

- Oktagon plugs

4x - Fibre-concrete tube with - Fibre-concrete plugs

Description of test objects:

- Oktagon PLUS

The formwork tie-rod system is made from a single piece of polyethylene (HD-PE, PVC-free).

Internal diameter 24 mm, diameter of formwork support 44 mm, length 200 mm.

- Oktagon plugs

Sealing plugs for watertight and flush sealing of Oktagon cones.

Two plugs are used for each spacer.

- Fibre-concrete tube and fibre-concrete plug

Internal diameter of tube: 22 mm

Length of plug: 20 mm

For each spacer, 4 pieces were used

The fibre-concrete plugs were sealed with 'NEVO-FBK 1' single-component fibre-concrete adhesive.

The Oktagon plugs were knocked into the plastic tube using a hammer.

The distance from one formwork tie rod to the next was approx. 150 mm.

The concrete component was made from B2 concrete of strength class C25/30.

Overall dimensions of the test object: 500 mm x 500 mm x 200 mm

Datasheets for the test object can be found on pages 1-3 of the annex.

4 Test apparatus

The test object was placed vertically into the test frame of the firing chamber with a clear test aperture of 550 mm x 550 mm (W x H). The gaps between the test object and the test aperture were sealed with mineral wool strips.

The overall conditioning of the test object was conducted in line with ÖNORM EN 1363-1.

5 Performance of the test

The firing chamber was fired by means of an oil burner (heating oil extra-light as per ÖNORM C 1109). The temperature in the firing chamber was regulated pursuant to the mean value of the firing chamber temperature measuring points in accordance with the unit temperature-time curve.

The test was conducted on 4 April 2013.

Monitoring and control of the furnace pressure was performed in line with ÖNORM EN 1363-1.

To measure the temperature in the firing chamber, four thermal plate elements were placed inside it

at approximately 10 cm distance from the test object (see Annex, page 4). Six thermal elements were

attached to the surface of the test body facing away from the fire (see Annex, page 5).

Observations during the test:

29 minutes: Emission of moisture from measuring point 2 29 minutes: Emission of moisture from measuring point 6 42 minutes: Smoke build-up at measuring point 6

60 minutes: Heat insulation and integrity exist 90 minutes: Heat insulation and integrity exist

116 minutes: Formation of gaps in the vicinity of measuring points 5 and 6 120 minutes: Heat insulation and integrity exist

180 minutes: Heat insulation and integrity exist 182 minutes: Heat insulation and integrity exist End of test (at request of client)

The temperatures measured in the course of the test (firing chamber temperatures, temperatures of the test object surface facing away from the fire) are given on pages 6-8 of the Annex, along with records of the pressure measurement.

Photographic documentation is located on pages 9-10 of the Annex.

7 Assessment of the test results

The construction in question was exposed to the temperatures of the unit temperature-time curve for a test duration of 182 minutes; the maximum temperature increase measured on the surface of the test object facing away from the fire was 88 K, which remains below the maximum permitted temperature increase of 180 K according to ÖNORM EN 1363-1.

On the basis of the test results, the tested formwork tie-rod systems with the designation 'Oktagon PLUS' and 'Fibre-Concrete Tube' with 'Fibre-Concrete Plug' have satisfied the criteria of heat insulation and integrity over a test duration of 182 minutes, on the basis of ÖNORM EN 1363-1.
