Dear Parents/Carers,

Next week is Student Wellbeing Week at OLHC, this is a new initiative. All students will have the opportunity to take part in focussed lessons relating to personal wellbeing. All Reading, Writing,

Religion, Inquiry and Specialist lessons will integrate the day’s wellbeing themes, as seen below:

Mon 15th - Self Awareness and Appreciation Day Tues 16th - OLHC RU OK Day

Wed 17th - Joyful Acts of Kindness Day Thurs 18th - Gratitude Thursday

Fri 19th - Mindfulness FriYAY! National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence

(Wear a touch of ORANGE with your school uniform).

Now more than ever adults and children are needing some support in ways to handle

themselves, their relationships and their learning.

When everyone develops their skills in anyone of these areas, this can lead to more positive learning and life experiences for all.

Student Wellbeing Week is aimed to begin some healthy wellbeing practices focussing on both adults and children taking ownership of their own mental health and wellbeing.

Things to know:

Friday 19th March is the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence (NDA). Students will be taking part in a lesson relating to this and will wear some ORANGE as a symbol to highlight the initiative Bullying No Way. Please allow your child to wear a touch of orange with their school uniform to support this cause.

If you need some further support in managing your child’s wellbeing, please contact

[email protected] OR you may find the following links useful. Please be mindful your child is supervised by an adult if using these resources as well:

School Captains Hopes for 2021

As we look forward to creating more opportunities for student voice we would like to share with you the voices of our Captains as they express their views on how we can improve the learning experiences for all at Our Lady Help of Christians. We look forward to working with our Captains, their contribution to the school over the course of the year will be beneficial to all.

Isla V (School Captain)

(3)

I have many hopes for the future at Our Lady’s for 2021. I have numerous ideas which would make our school a better learning environment for us all. Some of my hopes and ideas for the future include having more murals on display and having our clubs reopen!

My first proposal/idea is for us to have more murals painted around the school. This would mean we would have a very welcoming environment, where everyone feels involved/included in our school community. The murals may consist of vivid colours and may convey a specific moral. We could have our students contribute to painting these murals, so we have our school communities input as well. We do have quite a few artworks already presented around the school as well as a mural in the Northern Playground and I believe having more of these murals around the school wouldn’t just provide a welcoming feeling but also have students elevated and thrilled about contributing to these murals which will be on display around the school.

My second proposal/idea is for us to have our clubs open up again, with more to offer and having them run efficiently. This would provide more to do during recess and lunch breaks and entertainment for those who might not have found a friend or just want something relaxing to do! This would provide us with a cheerful school atmosphere and delight the students. We have had our clubs run before and they were quite successful so I hope we can reinforce these clubs and make them even more enjoyable for all our students.

Domenic H (School Captain)

As a School Captain, I already have countless hopes to make this school even more welcoming and make people feel more delighted about learning at this school. I hope that people here can enjoy learning here as much as I had enjoyed it during my time here. I feel strongly that we could make students feel more excited to learn by encouraging teachers and students to decorate their classroom and make all students feel more comfortable in their learning environment. The Year 6 leaders and teachers could set up more clubs at recess and lunchtime that could include things that would make children more social with their classmates and have more fun during their time here.

We could grow some crops in Parusolo’s Patch and all work together to help make the plants grow.

During the current Coronavirus pandemic, it is quite

hard for students to stay healthy at school. Due to that, we should put more hand sanitiser stations around the school for students before they have their lunch or have been playing outside. As a school, it would be a very good idea if we were all to help out in our community more. We could help out by doing a park cleanup once a month. When the pandemic settles, we should have more excursions to local places, such as the Merri Creek and learn about the bacteria and what lives around those areas. We could have some incursions during the year to keep things exciting and help kids have more fun. We could all contribute to helping this school and helping each other on the way.

Fred B (Vice Captain)

As the active Vice Captain of OLHC I have many hopes for our school that would make it an even better place . As we all know everything can become better than it already is and as Vice Captain I have a few hopes that would make our school better in the classroom and outside in the yard . My first hope for OLHC is to reintroduce clubs and other group activities . If this was incorporated into our school structure it may give children who do not want to play as active games at recess and lunch a chance to relax but still socialise with others. One of my other hopes for OLHC is to see the increase of inclusive play in the playground . Another hope for our school is to see the restoration of excursions and outside of school projects. This would mean Interschool sports, where OLHC could restart the reign of undefeated champions of 2019.

An additional hope for this school would be making it more inviting. Things that would fall under that category would be putting up colourful murals and attractive pictures that would make students feel happy and give them a good attitude towards the day. I have many more hopes for our school and these are just a few of them. Hopefully these ideas will contribute in making our school even better than it is.

Christen M (School Vice Captain)

As a Vice Captain I believe that our school should strive to be the best it could possibly be. Nothing is perfect as we all know but as the Captains work together we believe we can listen to people and make sure we can get the school to be the best it can. I feel that the students in the classroom should work together in an assembly of people. This is so

(4)

we can interact with other students, build up our social skills and learn to work in a group with people we aren’t familiar with. If we do some of the following things we can learn to work with other people who have different learning styles.

I believe that going on more excursions would help the children of this school to find themselves in the world and discover new things that they have never experienced before. By going on excursions we are able to touch, feel and listen. This helps students to learn visually rather than from a screen. From this learning it brings a better understanding of the topic and helps classroom discussions.

Murals also help to create a welcoming and inviting environment for new students and families. This is due to the fact that they can help new students feel comfortable while entering into a new environment.

By using our welcoming attitudes and our colourful murals this can help boost the mood of all.

I hope that these ideas promote a greater learning experience for all at OLHC.
