The Scene Setter

• Michigan plays its regular season fi nale in Columbus before heading to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Tournament at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

• U-M has closed playing four games in eight days. It is the second time the Wolverines have had a similar stretch.

• Hunter Dickinson leads U-M in scoring (18.4) and rebounding (8.5). He has 13 straight double-fi gure games with seven of his 13 20+ point games, including his career-best 33 in the win over Michigan State (March 3).

• With 22 buckets over his last two games, Dickinson surpassed 200 fi eld goals (211) on the season -- the 48th time a Wolverine has done so in program history.

• After back-to-back four block games, Dickinson’s 81 career blocks cracked U-M’s top 15 (14th). His 41 this season is tied for the 21st most in a single season.

• DeVante’ Jones needs three rebounds for 600; 15 steals for 200; 27 points for 1,600; 27 assists for 500 for his collegiate career.

• With a team-best 53 three-pointers, Caleb Houstan is the fi rst freshman to lead the team from long range since Ignas Brazdeikis (2018-19; 56). The last Wolverines to drain 60+ was Moritz Wagner (63; 2017-18).

The No. 23 Ohio State Buckeyes

• No. 23 Ohio State went 4-3 since playing the Wolverines in mid-February at Crisler.

After a 78-70 loss to Nebraska (March 1), the Buckeyes rebounded with an 80-69 victory over Michigan State (March 3).

• After rescheduled games due to covid-19 protocols, OSU has played its last six games over the last 13 days.

• OSU averages 74.2 points, 34.6 rebounds and 13.0 assists per game. Nearly 43% of the Buckeye off ense comes via the long range bucket (611-of-1538 shots).

• Ohio State is led by Big Ten and National Player of the Year candidate E.J. Liddell.

With 28 consecutive double fi gure games, he leads with 19.5 points per game. He has 12 games of 20+ including a season-best 34 against Northwestern (Jan. 9). He adds a team-best 7.8 rebounds and has 73 assists (2.6 apg) and 73 blocks (2.6 bpg) and seven double-doubles.

• Liddell is shooting 49.7% from the fl oor and is tied for the team-best with 41 three-pointers (38.0%). Lastly, he has 184 trips to the free throw line, more than dou- bling of the next closest Buckeye (Malaki Branha, 81).

• Freshman and Columbus native Malaki Branham, who has started 27 of 28 games, has burst onto the scene and is averaging 13.1 points. He has 15 double digit games, including his last seven games. He scored a career-best 35 at Nebraska (Jan. 2) as he knocked down six of his 33 three-pointers. He adds 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists.

• Down low for the Buckeyes, Zed Key has averaged 8.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and is shooting 56.5%. Taking advantage of the NCAA’s extra season, Kyle Young is back and has averaged 8.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, while shooting 51.9%.

• In their 27 NCAA Tournament appearances, Ohio State has made 10 trips to the Final Four winning the 1960 national title.

Earlier This Season

• Eli Brooks recorded his 1,000th career point, and DeVante’ Jones nearly posted a triple-double, however Michigan fell, 68-57, to No. 16 Ohio State at Crisler Center.

• After upsetting No. 3 Purdue just two days prior, the Wolverines found themselves playing their fourth game in eight days and struggled to see the ball go through the net in the second half. On the other end, E.J. Liddell’s 28 points led Ohio State as the Buckeyes shot 50 percent and were 16-for-18 on free throws.

• Brooks’ 17 points helped him become the 56th Wolverine to reach 1,000 points, while adding four rebounds and fi ve assists. In his 100th career start, Jones nearly had a triple-double after recording eight points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Hunter Dick- inson posted his 14 points with seven rebounds.

I am grateful for the partnership with Michigan Athletics Director, Warde Manuel and Wisconsin Athletics Director, Chris McIntosh. Our expectation is that the incident yesterday will provide our coaches and student-ath- letes with the opportunity to refl ect, learn and move forward in a manner that demonstrates decorum and leader- ship on and off of the court.”

U-M’s Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics Warde Manuel

“Today’s disciplinary actions underscore the seriousness with which we take the incident that unfolded on Sun- day. Simply put, there is no room at U-M for the behavior we saw. We will learn from this incident as a department, work to improve ourselves while operating under a spotlight, and move forward in a positive light.”

U-M’s David and Meredith Kaplan men’s basketball coach Juwan Howard

“After taking time to refl ect on all that happened, I realize how unacceptable both my actions and words were, and how they aff ected so many. I am truly sorry. I am off ering my sincerest apology to my players and their families, my staff , my family and the Michigan fans around the world. I would like to personally apologize to Wisconsin’s Assistant Coach Joe Krabbenhoft and his family, too. Lastly, I speak a lot about being a Michigan man and representing the University of Michigan with class and pride, I did not do that, nor did I set the right example in the right way for my student-athletes. I will learn from my mistake and this mistake will never happen again. No excuses!”

• Going 31-for-33 in February from the free throw line, Dickinson is nearly at 80% for the season (79.4%; 77-for-97).

• The last Wolverine to average more than 17+ points in a season was Nik Stauskas (17.5 ppg) in the 2013-14 season, when he guided U-M to the Big Ten title (by three games), was the Big Ten Player of the Year and guided U-M to the Elite Eight, losing on a last second shot vs. Kentucky. The last 18+ point Wolverine was National Player of the Year Trey Burke (18.6) during the 2012-13 season as he guided the Wolverines to the 2013 Final Four and national title game vs. Louisville.

• The last Wolverine to average more than 8+ rebounds in a season, technically is Mitch McGary (8.3 rpg) during the 2013-14 season, however, he only played eight games after a back injury sidelined him for the season. After McGary, the next Wolverine is LaVell Blanchard (8.4 rpg) in 2000-01.

• Houstan set a new career-best and then tied it with back-to-back games of 21 points against Rutgers and then No. 15 Illinois. Those performances were the fi rst two 20+ point games of his career.

• Houstan had a career-best 21 against Rutgers as he was 6-for-12 as he tied a career-best with fi ve three-pointers. He followed with another 21 points as he was 6-for-8 from the fi eld with two more triples. He went a career-best 7-for-7 on free throws.

Another Year, Another One of the Strongest Schedules

NCAA Net (8th); KenPom (6th); Sagarin (1st), ESPN BPI (5th) and KPI (2nd).

• U-M’s schedule ranking is so high, could have a simple answer -- they play in the Big Ten. Check out the list of Big Ten’s ranked in KenPom’s top 25 strongest schedules -- Michigan (6th), Michigan State (11th), Wiscon- sin (13th), Illinois (16th), Ohio State (18th), Minnesota (20th), Penn State (22nd), Maryland (26th), Nebraska (28th), Northwestern (32nd) and Purdue (34th).

Continuing a Pattern of Big Ten Success

• With the win against Michigan State (March 1), U-M picked up its 10th Big Ten win and extended its streak of 10+ conference wins to seven straight seasons and 10 of the last 11.

• Since the 2011-12 season, the Wolverines have compiled a 130-71 Big Ten record winning regular season titles in 2012, ‘14 and ‘21 and adding back-to-back Big Ten Tournament titles in 2017 and ‘18. Michigan has had 10+ wins in Big Ten play 36 total times.

• Brooks has started his last 86 games -- basically his last three seasons. However, they are not technically consecutive as he has missed two games -- one (Wisconsin, Feb. 27, 2020) due to after eff ects of a broken nose and another (at Minnesota, Jan. 16, 2021) due to a foot injury. For his career, he has 98.

He added a 25 points, 10 assists eff ort against No. 15 Illinois (Feb. 27).

• Jones leads U-M with 132 (4.6 apg) assists. He has twice tied his career-best with 10 assists against No. 3 Purdue and No. 15 Illinois. He adds 4.7 rebounds, with three games of 10+ rebounds, with a season-best 12 against Seton Hall (Nov. 16).

Could the Third Time Continue the Charm?

• U-M welcomed Coastal Carolina graduate transfer DeVante’ Jones. He is the third graduate transfer for the Wolverines since Jaaron Simmons (Ohio) in 2017-18 and Mike Smith (Columbia) in 2020-21.

• Simmons, who is currently U-M’s video analyst, helped the Wolverines to a second straight Big Ten Tourna- ment title as well as advance to the Final Four and national title game vs. Villanova in 2018.

• In a covid-19 altered season, Smith guided the Maize and Blue to the 2021 Big Ten regular season title, a No.

1 seed in the NCAA Tournament (East) and the program’s fourth Elite Eight appearance since 2013.
